Just thought I'd also echo my vote for feeling free to expand beyond one page, so long as you keep the first post easy to read and easy to find what you're looking for.

I would also agree that topics should try to present their main point early and simply, and then expand into detail. (Most do this already, and I think it's a good policy.)

All right, then, if that's the case I'm actually going to remake this thread--it's getting tough to make new sections by the method I used to have done (duplicating posts).

I'll reserve two pages' worth of posts in the new thread (that should be enough to last a while), and when it goes up I'll edit each post of this one so it points to the corresponding entry in the new thread.

And so people say to me, "How do I know if a word is real?" You know, anyone who's read a children's book knows that love makes things real. If you love a word, use it! That makes it real. Being in the dictionary is an artificial distinction; it doesn't make the word any more real than any other word. If you love a word, it becomes real.

Oh, while I'm at it, any other suggestions for new sections? Already on the table is Prevention/Replacement effects, Mana abilities, Combat, Planeswalkers, and Tribal.

Characteristic-defining abilities? X? Costs?

And your thoughts on including a small "Back to the Table of Contents" link near the top and/or bottom of each section--good idea?

Yes, that's a good idea.

Also, any way to have the boards not try to open the links from the ToC in a new window - it'd be nice if it was just a "regular" link.

Costs. I see a lot of questions about alternate costs, how cost reducing/increasing effects affect these alternate costs, etc...

Link to Table of Contents, very good idea.

No way to do that the way the boards are currently set up--almost all links are pretty much forced to open a new window. The only ones that don't are anchor links that are on the current page...but since any given thread can be viewed from a ton of different URLs, trying to do that doesn't produce reliable results, and things on other pages would open in a new window anyway.

I've several times suggested the addition of anchor links to the boards techs, but no luck so far in getting them.

All right, so here's the section layout I have so far:
  • Basic RQ&A Info
  • Most Frequently Asked (links to the most commonly-asked things, which technically reside in other sections)
  • Cards
    • Types of cards (Auras, Planeswalkers, Tribals)
    • Properties of cards (Color, Mana cost)

  • Spells
  • Abilities
  • Combat
  • Play Issues (most everything else)
  • Tournament Info
  • Miscellaneous

I really want to find a way to break up "play issues" into a batch of smaller sections, but I can't think of a way offhand in which to do that. Any suggestions?

Oh, also, any suggestions for questions for the new sections? Planeswalkers, Tribal, Prevention/Replacement, Combat, Costs? Or, while I'm at it, for the existing ones? Don't worry about mentioning something I may already have thought of; confirmation and redundancy is better than silence and deficiency.

Oh, also, any suggestions for questions for the new sections? Planeswalkers

1) Is a Planeswalker a creature?
2) Is a Planeswalker an enchantment?
3) Can I target a Planeswalker with a lifegain spell to add loyalty counters (or with other "target player" spells)?
4) Can I play a Planeswalker's ability as soon as it comes into play?
5) Can I Incinerate my opponent's Planeswalker as soon as it comes into play, before he can add counters to it?

Tribal

1) Why isn't Tribal a supertype? It sounds like a supertype.
2) Is a Tribal a creature?
3) Can Tribals only affect creatures with the same creature type?

Prevention/Replacement

1) When multiple prevention/replacement effects could apply to the same event, who chooses the order in which they apply?

Combat

1) Can I tap/untap an attacking creature to stop it from attacking?
2) If my opponent attacks me with a creature and I Unsummon / Incinerate / Terror it, does it still do its damage to me?
3) If I attack with a 2/2 and my opponent blocks with a 2/2, can I save my creature with Unsummon ? Will the opponent's creature still die?
4) If my opponent blocks my attacking creature with a creature that doesn't have flying or reach, can I give it flying to make it go through to the opponent?

Costs?

1) Can I tap my opponent's land/creature in response to a spell or ability so that they can't pay the cost and it fizzles? Same for Shock ing a creature that was sacrificed to pay the cost of an ability.
2) Do effects that increase/reduce a spell's cost change its CMC?

Good list.

I would focus, not so much on whether tribals are creatures as on whether they are affected by things that affect creatures, e.g. can Eyeblight's End take out Boggart Shenanigans .

For replacement/prevention stuff, I would draw some attention to what they aren't. In other words, address questions about things newbies sometimes think are replacement or prevention effects but really are nothing of the sort - "what good does Howling Mine do me?", "can I play (insert card with targeted comes-into-play ability here) without a target?", and so on. In short, directly address the common confusion between replacement effects (and additional costs) on the one hand, and triggered abilities on the other.

Agreed. Good list. One more for Tribal should reference the "permanent card" errata:

"Can Amrou Scout let me get Crib Swap from my Library?"
