Welcome to Legacy, home of the Dual Lands, Force of Wills, Fast Combo decks and competitive Aggro.Legacy Resource Links: Legacy's Ban List 2007 FAQ and Primers Legacy's Deck to Beat sub-forumFormat Overrview Legacy (Type 1.5) is one of 2 "Eternal" formats recognized by the DCI. The other being Vintage (Type 1). An eternal format means, rather than having sets "Cycle in" while bumping others out, it keeps all the expansions and core sets that already exist while adding new sets to its card pool. The format is always growing larger unlike the other formats. Most importantly you can build a deck and keep it for a couple years and it still be legal. Since you have access to every set ever released, some restrictions have to be put in place. This is where we get our ban list. This list is put into place to keep the format balanced. With out it you would have a one sided, costly format. Legacy's ban list helps broaden the range of what is competitive and we don't have to pay hundreds of dollars for the real power cards. Vintage (the other eternal format) has its own ban list, and a "Restricted list" which is much broader than the Legacy list and can be much more expensive to play. If you are interested in Vintage here is a Link to their FAQ. Question and AnswerQ-0) Why play Legacy? A-0) A lot Legacy players have chosen the format because it offers a large card pool with out the $100+ cards. Which is an attractive enviorment for homebrew players. Another popular reason to play legacy is that you can keep a deck for as long as you'd like with no worries of your deck rotating out. Once you realize this, investing in the staples of the format doesn't seem so tough. Q-1) On what turn do Legacy decks try to win? A-1) Generally a Legacy deck tries to win some time between turns 3 and 5. This doesn't mean decks always win this early in the game. There are disruption elements to stop quick agro and quick combo, this can cause the game to go much longer.br Q-1.2) I’ve heard some legacy decks win on turn 2 and some times on turn 1, is that true? A-1.2) Some Legacy decks have the capability to go off on turn 1 or 2. Often the decks that can go off this early in the game will average at turn 3 or 4 most of the time. If a Legacy deck is fully commited to going off turns 1 and 2 it can be easily disrupted. Legacy is flooded with early disruption which helps to keep these decks from ever gaining too much popularity. A large portion of legacy decks run early game disruption. Many cards can help you from losing turn 1 and 2. The idea is to look for something that costs 1 or less mana that will disrupt your opponent’s fragile game plan. (Ex. Daze, Force of Will, Chalice of the Void, Duress) Q-2) How much money am I looking to lose building a competitive Legacy deck? A-2) Starting completely from scratch you would have to drop about $300-400 for a competitive deck running dual lands. Which leads us to... Q-2.2) Can you build competitive budget decks in legacy? A-2.2) Yes you can. Many people have attempted to convert established competitive decks into budget decks. This has lead to some success, but for the full effect you need to drop the cash. Q-3) Is there a restricted list for Legacy like in Vintage? A-3) Unlike Vintage legacy has no restricted list. This means you can run 4 of any card that is not banned in the format. Q-4) One of the most frequent questions that comes up is "Is my DECK-X competitive?" A-4) This is a complex question but the short answer would be, if you are not running a [DtB] (Deck to Beat) then you at least need to have good match ups against them. The long answer would be, review other areas of the forum such as the Gaunlet Thread and the Decks To Beat subforum. Learn the format and play out the match-ups from the gaunlet thread.
If your question is on a ruling please take it to the Rules Q&A FAQ thread.

Is there a link to the old FAQ thread? It appears that the forums have been purged since I've been gone, and I was looking for some info on Sunrise Eggs.

edit: moved it to the top of the FAQ to make it easier to find.

Where would it be appropriate to link to decks that appear in the metagame that aren't necessarily DtBs? Such as: Vial AffinityGoyf Sligh2 Land BelcherRGW ZooTeam AmericaBurnMUCStompyAll viable, or at least semi-viable options that will probably be seen at larger events (if just due to their affordability). At The Source they have enough discussion to actually keep DtWs on the first page. We don't have that luxury here, so I feel like the relevant decks get bumped off the front page for experimental stuff. The DTB forum is not the right place of these, but they are still relevant. People put a lot of work into the primers, let's not let them fall into obscurity.

I agree. We should have a DtW section just like DtB. This will make it easier for newer players to find deckslists and conversation without having to wade though all the rif (us older players as well). I also agree with the decks that supa tim has suggested for this section and the reasons why.

Recently, The Source created two threads, CounterTop and Tempo Thresh, instead of having a thread for each color combination of Thresh plus the different variants of NLU. It seems logical, as, for example, UGb CounterTop Thresh is more similar to UGw CounterTop Thresh than UGb Tempo Thresh. Could we do something like that here?
