The following is an examination of various draft strategies. While each section is intended for the basic eight-man booster draft, the strategies can be readily applied to booster drafts of larger and smaller sizes, as well as other similar limited variants. If you find any grammar errors, spelling errors, or broken links, please inform me. If you have differing views on part of the guide, please voice them as well. In any limited format, there are a few basic ideas to consider while making your card picks:
Colors and their abilities
Creatures vs. Spells
Aggro vs. Control
How will I win?
Mana Fixing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Colors and their abilities
Each color comes with its very own advantages and weaknesses. While these may change from set to set, each color still has a basic underlying philosophy. Knowing what each color can and can’t do in a given set will help you to make picks that benefit your deck’s overall plan. Here is a basic list of the colors and their abilities:
White gets small creatures with great p/t per mana invested. They also often come with added abilities at such a small price. This can make white a very aggressive color. At the same time, white gets a good amount of mid-sized defensive creatures.
White gets the best cheap fliers, and it gets a good share of the better large fliers as well. Many of its fliers have the benefit of extra combat abilities.
Most of white’s removal comes in the form of targeting attackers or blockers. Also, a large portion of the abilities on white’s permanents are combat related. However, more recently, white has gotten more removed from the game removal.
White can also incapacitate an opponent’s attempt to cause damage through a variety of prevention methods. These range from life gain spells and damage preventions effects, to cards that prevent opposing creatures from entering combat. White is also the color with the most “protection” creatures.
White is the best color at removing enchantments, and is average at killing artifacts. In most environments, this more useful as a sideboard option to deal with really good [post=]bombs[/post]. White also has an affinity for enchantments, with various cards that better when they are in play.
Blue is the least aggressive color. Many of its creatures have a higher toughness than power. Blue often makes up for this with a high amount of evasion creatures, from fliers to unblockables and much more in between.
Blue has difficulty in destroying anything and everything. Instead, it has two main ways to deal with permanents. The first is to return it to a player’s hand or library. The second is to possess, often through the use of auras or sneaky creatures.
While blue has troubles with cards in play, it can prevent them from getting there in the first place through the use of counterspells. Also, blue has many cards that manipulate the characteristics of cards, such as power and toughness switching, type changing, and copying.
Blue has the best card drawing and card filtering in the game. This is its main method for gaining “card advantage.” Also, blue has the ability to mill libraries. While often not viable for limited, some formats and/or archetypes allow for a decking strategy to be quite powerful.
Black has some of the weakest creatures in relation to power and toughness. The creatures are mostly aggressive minded and often have drawbacks in order to give them a fighting chance with other color’s creatures. They do get a variety of evasion, though usually in weak packages.
Black has some of the best removal. Although it often comes with restrictions, no other color can point and kill creatures like Black can. It has a variety of ways to deal with opposing forces, from -X/-X effects, to drain spells, to plain ole destruction cards.
Black can both retrieve creatures from the graveyard and remove cards in an opponent’s graveyard from the game. The first is generally useful as you will often find creatures dying during a game. The latter is more of a sideboard strategy but can be quite useful against powerful cards that recur from the graveyard, especially unearth from Alara block.
Black has difficulties in dealing with enchantments and artifacts, but to cover this weakness, it can remove threats from an opponent’s hand before they are ever played. In addition to this, black can remove cards from a player’s library before that player ever draws them. Black also has the ability to search through its library for specific cards, those this is usually a hard ability to find, being so potentially powerful.
Red is the fastest color in terms of the goals each of its mechanics aim towards. Red has a lot of aggressive creatures with combat related abilities, haste showing off the color’s speed. Red also gets fast, temporary mana production.
Red is a very destructive color. It can handle every permanent except enchantments. Red’s most useful tool is direct damage. Aimed at one creature, many creatures, or the opponent’s head, these spells are hallmarks for their versatility and viability. Red is also the best at land destruction and second best at artifact destruction.
Red can steal creatures alike blue, but only temporarily. In exchange, red often gets to use the creatures it steals right away. Red also has various abilities which either introduce randomness, trickery, or confusion into the game.
Green gets the most efficient creatures overall. The power and toughness of its forces is almost always higher per mana than other colors. It almost always has the biggest creatures and can play both offensive and defensive roles in combat well. It also has the best token producing capabilities. However, this increase in efficiency comes at the cost of evasion, with their only common way of “evasion” being trample.
Green has various ways to influence combat, most often with pump spells. Green can make its creatures bigger at a moment’s notice, whether to save it from lethal damage, make it big enough to destroy a creature it is combating with, or simply to deal more damage to an opponent. Green can also gain life to negate such a life loss.
Green is the best color at ramping up mana. It has various abilities that accel the rate at which you gather mana and land. Green’s main search abilities deal with land, and because it can fix the production of mana by changing its color or searching out lands that produce mana of different colors, it often finds itself the center of multicolor decks. Also, green has many cards that benefit or influence the play of enchantments.
Green can destroy artifacts, enchantments, and lands all with ease. However, green more often than not has to be tricky to deal with creatures. It does have the ability to deal with flying creatures, but other than that, it relies on combat or other colors to handle creatures.
Creatures are almost always more important than non-creature spells in most given environments. The basic principle here is that most limited decks cannot win without sending creatures into combat in attempt to lower the opponent’s life total to zero.
A common successful draft will allow a player to build a deck with a ratio between 2 to 1 and 1 to 1, creatures to non-creature spells.
Because creatures are so important, you will often want a large portion of your non-creature spells to either protect your own creatures or harm opposing ones. Generally, this means removal or pump effects.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aggro vs. Control
As a draft proceeds, pay attention to what kind of deck the cards you pick lend themselves best to. Some cards are universally good and it won’t matter what kind of deck you intend to play when they are present (most efficient removal fits into this category). But many other cards will direct your strategy in one direction or another. Aggro tends to play more aggressive, cheap creatures to get their opponent down to 0 as quickly as possible. Control tries to stall out the game with removal and defensively minded cards so it can drop out some fat and finish the game off quickly.
Efficient creatures with strong combat abilities lend themselves best to aggro decks. Conversely, creatures that slow down the opposition or get better over time lend themselves best to control decks. By paying attention to which direction your deck is heading, you can make draft picks that will better fit the theme of your deck’s strategy. Cards with like-minded goals make more concise and stronger decks.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How will I win?
Going through the draft, you should develop an idea of how your deck will win. While damaging an opponent until his or her life total is zero is the most obvious intention, there are various ways to reach that goal (as well as ways to reach other winning goals). Will your deck attempt to put more fast pressure upon an opponent than he or she has time to handle? Will your deck stall the combat phase as much as possible until it can find creatures too big or dangerous to deal with? Perhaps your deck has a milling theme that can reduce your opponent’s library to zero swiftly. Or perhaps you have a multitude of cards that create overwhelming card advantage in your favor. Much like knowing whether your deck is aggro or control oriented, knowing how your deck will most likely win will allow you to draft cards in later picks that will help support that strategy.
A limited deck can use any or all of the cards you have drafted. It must have a minimum of 40 cards. You are allowed as much basic land as you need from the draft organizer. Those are the absolutes, here are some recommendations:
Play 40 cards
Mana curve
Land balance
Color balance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Play 40 cards
There are rarely any good reasons to build a deck of more than 40 cards. The fact is that some cards in your deck will be better than others, and getting to the best cards in your deck as soon as possible increases your chances of winning. You want as much consistency as possible in your deck.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mana curve
Different decks will find different turns to be their most important, but every deck needs to be able to handle the tempo of the game, whether creating it or controlling it.
You need more cards to play on your early turns than you need to play in your later turns. Most decks have a mana curve that looks like a pyramid, with a few cards able to be cast for 1 mana, more cards being able to be cast for 2 mana, and most cards being able to be cast for 3 mana. From there, the curve goes back down. The number of land you run should be adjusted to match your curve.
The importance of curving your mana is to ensure that you have an impact on the game. If every card in your hand costs four or more mana, your opponent may be able to win before you ever play a spell. Conversely, the more mana a spell costs, the more powerful it usually is, so finding a way to put those in your deck is a must. You just can’t have too many. Having cards to play through all stages of the game is very important.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Land balance
17 land per deck is the base average. This fluctuates depending on the mana requirements of your spells, as well as how many replacement mana sources and quick sifters you have.
If your deck has higher than usual casting costs, three or more colors to support, cards that have powerful, reusable mana activations, or cards that are so good that only missing land drops will make you lose, consider moving up to 18 (or in extreme cases, 19) land.
If your deck has lower than usual casting costs, 2 or less colors to support, mana helpers and land searchers, or quick cantrips and card filters, consider going down to 16 (or in extreme cases, 15) land.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Color balance
Different formats allow for a greater or weaker ability to splash for different color cards. When building your deck, you must assess how able your deck is to access different colors of mana. Many decks can do no more than support two colors with a tiny splash of a third. Other decks can play all five colors readily. The blocks with the most mana fixing are generally heavily multicolored blocks, such as Invasion block, Ravnica block, and Alara block. In these formats in particular, mana fixing is significantly more important because it is more likely to play more than two colors.
The more colors you play, the less color heavy your spells need to be. Although a card like Grave Pact may be powerful, it will usually be too difficult to cast in a four-color deck.
Your main colors need to be able to support anything you wish to splash. Cards like Rampant Growth or the colored land cyclers from Conflux don’t work well when that color is the one you are stretching for.
You should divide your mana sources so that they show up as often as the cards that need them. This shouldn’t just be organized by color, but by the degree of color. Count the number of mana symbols of a particular color there are in the card’s mana cost. Let’s say you have a number of cards with 20 green mana symbols and 14 white mana symbols. If you were to run 17 lands, you should use 10 forests and 7 plains. In multicolored blocks, you will likely have to adjust these numbers based on off color activated abilities and nonbasic lands.
Each set creates its own different environment. Knowing what each color can do, what themes are present, and what cards are available will allow for smarter and more useful picks. Also, you will be able to play your games with the knowledge of what tricks and traps your opponent could likely have.
Know the commons
Know the themes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Know the commons
Commons make up the majority of a set in limited. For every one rare and three uncommons you see, you’ll see eleven commons (except in Alara block and onward, in which case you’ll see 10 commons and a basic land). This means most of your deck will likely be commons. Knowing the commons will help you evaluate the strength of a color and the signals being sent to you from other drafters. ExerciseShow
If you can get an entire set of commons, separate them each by color (color combinations for multi-color blocks) and construct a limited size deck for each color. Play games with each deck against the others, noting which colors are strongest and which cards do well. As you play games, rotate new cards into the deck from that color’s pool until you have a good feel for which cards work well in the environment. This will give you an idea of what each color offers in the set as well as what colors are likely to be drafted more than others.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Know the themes
Different themes interweave through every set. Some are inherent to the set’s structure (this card type matters; play many colors), some are generally cohesive (play this color with that color; play this card type with that card type), and some are specifically created for direct interaction (this subset of cards all grow much stronger when with each other). Each block and set has its own strategies that define it. The best decks come from knowing what cards will play best with others.
B.R.E.A.D. is an acronym that gives a basic guideline on how to rank a card’s importance. While it is extremely useful to learn, it is still just a stepping stone to more advanced drafting techniques. With that said, the basic principle is still used at some level in every expert’s game.
Bombs
Removal
Evasion
Application
Defensive
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bombs
Bombs are cards that usually do one of two things: they win all on their own; or they severely hinder the opponent’s chance at winning. They should create a continuous threat or win very quickly. Though they aren’t required to win a draft, having a bomb or two makes your deck much more threatening.
Cards like Loxodon Warhammer and Fireball are great because they can gain so much card advantage, create big life-swings, and simply finish on their own.
Cards like Damnation and Teferi’s Moat prevent the opponent from being able to kill you, giving you ample time to set up whatever win condition you can find.
Of course, the most obvious bombs are the ones that are just fat, evasive, or have relevant abilities, such as Woodfall Primus or Flameblast Dragon.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Removal
Creatures provide the main route to victory in almost every limited game. Being able to handle troublesome creatures is an important key to winning. Removal is an important counter to handling an opponent’s bomb.
The larger variety of creatures a removal spell can shut down, the better. The cheaper it can accomplish this task, even more the better. Spells like Terror , Pacifism , and Lightning Axe are all valued for their versatility and range.
Some removal spells are valuable not just because they remove a creature, but because they have other applications as well. Burn spells are an obvious example of this, but cards such as Slave of Bolas provide the ability to both remove a creature and provide some sort of extra bonus.
One more thing to note is that permanents that can tap down creatures are a form of removal. The ability to switch between what you are hindering is a valuable asset. However, most of them are creatures, and are therefore vulnerable to removal themselves. Some examples of permanents that tap down permanents would be Minister of Impediments and Fatestitcher .
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Evasion
Aggressive creatures lose their value when they no longer can damage an opponent. Thus, creatures with evasion are generally valued higher than those without it. Flying, landwalk (situationally, of course), fear, and other such abilities will help to get around the stalemates that occur after many turns of playing creatures.
Flying is the most basic evasion and is therefore highly important. Even if you do not have a any creatures of your own that can fly, you should have something to combat it (Giant Spider ). The same is true for any set that puts importance on a specific type of evasion, such as Tempest block with its shadow creatures .
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Application
Application refers to a few different ideas:
Draft what holes you feel your deck has. Too many big creatures? Grab a 2-mana/3-mana creature. Thinking about running a third color? Grab a mana-fixer.
Pick up cards with combat relevant abilities. Creatures like Saltfield Recluse and Rootwalla make it difficult for opponents to make good attacks and blocks.
Pick up cards that you could use as sideboard tech against an opponent. Artifact and enchantment removal usually misses the main-deck, but can be a strong option to have coming into games two and three.
Particularly in multicolored blocks, mana fixing is quite important, so you may want to consider it rather than an efficient creature sometimes.
What application basically means here is to draft cards that actively affect games, rather than cards that passively wait for the game to act upon them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Defensive
When no pick will help make your deck and its options better, pick the card that would most likely hurt your deck, or the card that would most likely make another player’s main deck. This concept is also known as hate drafting. Do not hate draft unless none of the cards in the pack have a chance at making your deck. It is more important to strengthen your own deck than to weaken another’s.

Card evaluation incorporates B.R.E.A.D., but moves far beyond it as well. The idea here is that no card has a constant power level. As your needs, plans, and pieces of information change, so too does the worth of each card. Card evaluation depends not just what’s in the pack, but what you already have.
The simplest example of this fluctuation is with colors. If you’ve drafted two packs worth of good black and white cards, and open a great blue card in pack three that costs , you should be less inclined to take it. It will probably benefit you more to pick a card aligned with your current strategy than to go off on another tangent this late in the game.
This fluctuation also occurs when you are lacking a specific type of card or are lacking somewhere on your mana curve. If you are faced with the choice between a piece of removal and an evasive creature, it may better to take the creature if you are lacking evasive threats and have plenty of ways to handle opposing attacks. Likewise, a strong five-mana creature may not be as good for your deck as a good two-mana creature if you’ve already drafted a lot of fat. One must always consider the number of non-creature spells and your curve.
Signaling refers to the ability to decipher what the players passing you each pack are likely drafting. Take notice of what colors and themes start to disappear. This may give you an indication that a change in strategy is needed. If you notice that the color of your first two picks stopped coming to you in your first pack, it may not be wise to grab a card of that same color when you open your second pack. While you may find a few cards that help you, that color will likely stop flowing once the third pack is opened, leaving you with only one pack’s worth of strength in that color. Being able to send signals is also important, because if you are passing strong red cards in pack 1, for example, in pack 2, you are more likely to receive cards that are on color. Knowing when to stick to a strategy and when to leave it behind is extremely important for a successful drafter and will open that player’s options to all the advanced drafting strategies.

Power drafting is the most popular limited strategy. The premise is to pick the strongest card in each pack until the signals you receive tell you which picks will benefit you most.
Overview
Concentrated Power Drafting
Reactive Power Drafting
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Overview
The card evaluation for this strategy is based on the direct power of the first few cards opened. Drafters utilizing this will spend their early picks grabbing whatever card they believe will have the biggest game impact. The picks don’t need to be a like color or theme initially. The idea is that taking the best cards now will establish a stronger base for the deck, letting later picks fill in holes in the deck.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Concentrated Power Drafting
Concentrated power drafters will take the best card in each pack, then move into a specific theme or color as soon as pick 2 or as late as pick 9. This strategy cares about grabbing power early, but also about settling-down into consistency. While more powerful cards may still be coming his or her way, this drafter has chosen to assist his or her first picks by selecting cards that work better with those cards. For example, if the first two cards were powerful blue cards, that player will be inclined to pick more blue cards earlier on, even if they are a bit weaker than other cards in the pack.
Pros
Early picks are strong
Creates consistency
Cons
Gives up power during middle picks
Relies heavily on the power of the early picks
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Reactive Power Drafting
Reactive power drafters will take the best card in each pack, and may not move into a specific theme or color until pick 10 or as late as pick 20. This strategy cares about constantly grabbing the best cards available and doesn’t care to settle-down until it either gets an exceptionally strong signal or has retrieved enough power picks to move in a concentrated direction. This strategy relies on its late picks to round the deck out into a workable form, looking for mana-fixing and creatures that fill out missing slots.
Pros
A lot of early strength
Flexible to move into different colors and themes in late picks
Archetype drafting is the premise of aiming for a very specific draft strategy and varies depending on the block format you are doing. Where in core set drafting, you come up with fairly simple, linear decks, block drafting provides a plethora of strategies that allow you to change up your draft each time. This guide will focus only on block drafting and not on core set drafting. In terms of cards to look for when drafting that archetype, I will only list commons and uncommons, since those are the foundation of any deck and it should be obvious to put the on-color bomby rare into your deck.
While at its core, Alara block drafting may just seem like grabbing a shard and sticking with it, it comes with many more subtleties than that. The wide variety of mana fixing allows you to adapt your draft and easily splash an extra color. 5-Power NayaShow
Mill is a deck that does exactly what it says it does...mill. It doesn't actually have very many common and uncommon cards that go with the strategy, so it is very dependent on its rares. Basically, draft a whole bunch of removal, get some rares and Mind Funeral s, then hope for the best. Cards to Look Out For: Cathartic Adept , Mind Funeral , Soul Manipulation
Approved by Rush, who doesn't have the time to maintain this thread anymore. I have tweaked parts that Rush has already written, and plan on adding additional sections on specific blocks strategies in the future. Feel free to make comments and suggestions on how to improve the guide, because trust me, I have the time to update this thread. Things to incorporate in the future: Guide to specific blocks and what archetypes are available.
