Why was Djinn of Wishes costed the way it is? With air elemental in the same set, even.
I thought rarity didn't affect power level

The car companies figured this out long ago, and we are following in their well-paved path. Probably not the industry you want to be taking business ideas from.

I thought rarity didn't affect power level Djinns get the dragon discount. Just like Angels, hence that new angel that's better than that other angel, even though both are in M2010. Wait... that doesn't make sense... both should get the discount.
Then it's because this set is not exhibiting power creep... it's exhibiting power leap. Seriously... looking at spoiled cards, wizards has gone crazy.

Rarity does affect power leveh. If it didn't, you could end up having all these crazy creatures running around in limited. However, I'm guessing it's not their only consideration.

I noticed that once again, no mention is made of how the set was designed in relation to the combat changes, and it looks like the next article will be as loathe to acknowledge it as well. Pity.
However, the Djinn seems to fizzle if you hit a land: You can't play a land if it's not your turn, or if you've already dropped a land this turn. This means you need to finagle with the deck to make sure your "wish" doesn't fizzle. Note that the removal of the wish counter is a cost, and this is a drawback. The Red Djinn, which MAY blow one of your things up, CAN blow up opne of two of your opponents' stuff as well, repeatedly each turn, andf it can take enchantments. Comparably, then, the two seem styled behind two different ideas of play and manipulation -- one of which is more manipulation, and the other is "I don't care" or "hope it has persist and/or I can get it back."
"Possibilities abound, too numerous to count."

One is blue and one is red. Seems to make perfect sense to me.
Furthermore, think of it from a top down perspective -- one of the things that goes with genies is "be careful what you wish for". You don't get to take back a wish just because it wasn't what you wanted (land). The card is well designed in my eyes.

I thought rarity didn't affect power level That was my biggest problem with it as well. If it had a different mana cost or different power/toughness it would bother me but having a strictly better creature in the same set is a bit "lame".
