There's been some talk of using Ajani Goldmane  's -1 power to keep creatures with the new Persist mechanic around forever. Does this work? +1/+1 counters don't get rid of -1/-1 counters, do they?

There are other topics about this on the SAME PAGE! And, yes... +1/+1 counters remove -1/-1 counters.

Yes.
[indent]420.5n If a permanent has both a +1/+1 counter and a -1/-1 counter on it, N +1/+1 and N -1/-1 counters are removed from it, where N is the smaller of the number of +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters on it.[/indent]

+1/+1 counters don't get rid of -1/-1 counters, do they?
Yes they do. +1/+1 counters and -1/-1 counters annihilate eachother until only one type of counter remains (or until no counters remain). Of course, Ajani's going to run out of loyalty eventually.
