Ultimate: Control target player's next turn.
To this day I'm still a little surprised that with Cadaverous Bloom, Squandered Resources, Natural Balance, and several draw spells in the same block, that they had no idea a combo deck was possible. But I guess "4 R&D members" explains that.

But I guess "4 R&D members" explains that. Fun fact of the day: Long was absolutely convinced that they planted those combo pieces for someone to find. And he said so to at least one of the people on the design team.
Wish I could find the source where I read that.

Ultimate: Control target player's next turn. Yeah, this seems likely. Wasn't this one of the ideas thrown around FSS before he was all spoiled anyway?

Wish I could find the source where I read that. I recall him saying that too, because I'd had the similar impression.

I wonder if it was something more direct, such as "Target player loses the game." That, or "You win the game." The latter would be particularly awesome.

A little too much when Nicol Bolas costs 7 mana, the ultimate only takes 8 loyalty, yet he starts with 6 and gains 2 for destroying a permanent. If you only have one creature on the board, and no burn spells, you shouldn't automatically lose the game to an opponent with 7 mana who plays one versatile card.

I'm about 99% positive that I've read MaRo tell extremely similar stories about almost every one of these cards before. Not that rehashing the past is bad, but it seems as though the article is displayed as a "new" piece of work. Time to go article diving to see if I can find these all in previous editions.
