Truth be told, I'd think having just three rarities would be APPEALING for new players. (Leave coolness out of this—IT DOESN'T EXIST.) This is going to make stocking up on mythics in stores' singles repositories a bit troublesome, methinks. (Or were Planar Chaos's shifted rares a test for this?)
At least the rules for mythic placement have more to do with the Vorthos aspect than Timmy, Johnny, or Spike. (So yes, there's every possibility that several mythics a set will be low-wattage)
However...approx. 229 cards in the basic set? That's TINY...

Change #2: We're Adding a New Rarity Called Mythic Rare This is only a good move if you value new players more than your existing ones. Making cool splashy cards harder to get is a HUGE turn-off for me.

At least someone noticed that the number of cards per year was getting excessive. And at least they have the good grace not to put lands at "mythic rare". God, imagine the howling if they had...

Hmmm...let me just get this out of the way: OMG, WotC sucks, Magic is dying!!! I just wonder how these changes would affect drafting.

Well, Rosewater DID say a couple of months ago that WotC was in strong customer acquisition mode...
I still don't get why newcomers to Magic from other CCG's would regard just three rarities as chimeric, though. (Although...Magic's the ONLY one? What about L5R?! Or did they alter their rarity scheme lately?)

I'm a lapsed player. Over the past couple of months I've been furiously acquiring theme decks. I really enjoy being able to make one purchase and play with the themes of a set, without having to buy a box of boosters.
The new Intro Pack seems like a good way to get new people hooked. However, it's going to turn me away, as well as anyone I would have taught (that's 3 in the past few months).

It's always a little sad when economic downturns or office politics prompt companies to reshuffle things for the sake of looking busy.
I mean, obviously there are reasons for these changes, but they're uncompelling reasons at best.
But everybody knows you've got to hammer out those projects, innovation and product launches, or your metric-driven managers who don't understand your business will ding you on your annual review.
I do hope that the end result is that somebody who worked really hard on the PowerPoints or whatever related to this busywork therefore doesn't lose his/her job and in the future does something actually useful.

Hmm... If Wizards is really that hard up for money, I think it would be better to push online play (where your marginal costs are lower) rather than put a squeeze on constructed players by making all their cards twice as rare.
