I thought Randy Buehler got fired? I was saddened when I saw that news, but now seeing him in the video here, maybe it was not true?

Also, anyone know where to find decklists for the Game in the Gulf Championship from Magic Online?

"Across the hall Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa sat down to face fellow countryman and reigning Brazilian National Champion Willy Edel."

Willy is not the Brazilian National Champion...Vagner Cassati is....Willy was 3rd

I know I should be happy there is coverage at all, but for 8 people working on coverage you'd think that in 3 hours from their last update they would have stuff to put up, going from round 1 to round 4 (probably actually round 5 there) and having nothing up makes me wonder what they are doing over there...

I agree that coverage is SORELY LACKING. I've been returning to the site about once an hour all day... and just to find round 1 coverage! For all the "bringing Magic back to the people" stance we've been hearing about lately, this does NOT seem to do the trick.

An hour later and still nothing, I'm sure they are on their final round of play by now, or just starting it, at this point I'd rather them just wait until day one finishes and put everything up at once, instead of pieces every couple(LOL, couple) hours..

Feature Match Round 1: Faeries beats Elves
Feature Match Round 2: Faeries beats control w/Cruel Ultimatum
Feature Match Round 3: Faeries beats 5c control
Feature Match Round 4: Faeries beats 5c(?) control
Bonus feature match 1: Faeries beats 5c control
Bonus feature match 2: Faeries beats RW Kithkin

You'd almost think there was some sort of trend here...

heh 3/5 of the 6-0 decks are Fairies.... so much for that "amazing" BW deck.

I really like the RW Vengeant Lark Deck.

Faeries was fine as long as it was selling new packs. But if it's still so good that it's limiting Shards and Conflux sales, well gosh maybe they'll have to do something.

(Honestly I doubt it, but I wouldn't mind seeing something like Caltrops or Aether Flash get printed.)

He was. Only that WotC (likely) already purchased the airlines tickets, and in his facebook blog post Randy said that he was under contract to do commentary for Worlds. However, starting at GP:LA, he was going to be a Magic Pro Player again.

IMHO: This may be one of his last Commentary shows, unless WotC agrees to contract him and BDM to continue doing it in the future. After all, Randy doesn't have to be an Employee to continue doing that part. If that doesn't happen, I can see the PTs starting in 2009 having the shows being commented by BDM and Rich Hagon.

Where is the *NEW* video Multimedia Coverage for the Hall of Fame?

When I checked it last night, all I saw was links to previously available downloadable material, and even then... Not all of the Hall of Famers were representative in that material.

So, what happened to this year's HoF newly released video coverage material?

There is an error in one of the links.
Round 9 links to Round 7.

Edit: It's been fixed, thanks!

If Olivier top 4's and Shuhei finishes outside the top 200, the he is Player of the Year, correct? But if Shuhei cracks the top 200 then Oli needs to finals or win...
If Olivier wins, that would be so awesome...his first tournament as a Hall of Famer---World Champion AND Player of the Year from a 14-point deficit
Shuhei must be kicking himself

If Olivier loses in the Semifinals, the France team finishes outside of the top 16 and Shuhei finishes outside of the top 200, then they end up tied with 69 points.

Is anyone else getting the round 14 pairings when they click on the standings for round 13?

I also feel obliged to correct Randy and BDM on their last tournament Centre. Julien Nuijten has also won both the individual (2004) and team (2006) worlds competition

Too bad the coverage is lagging behind again.

From what I've read elsewhere, it seems the top 8 is already clear.

Anyone got the lists for the top 8 matches? I know that de Rosa, Karsten, and Asahara are all running the Fae.

We got...

1) Paulo Vitor damo de Rosa (Brazil) - Faeries v. 8) Jamie Parke (USA) - ???

4) Frank Karsten (Netherlands) - Faeries v. 5) Tsuyoshi Ikeda (Japan) - ???

2) Antti Malin (Finland) - ??? v. 7) Akira Asahara (Japan) - Faeries

3) Kenji Tsumura (Japan) - ??? v. 6) Hannes Kerem (EST) - ???

What's EST? :o

How's the coverage going to work tomorrow? Are we going to see the whole top 8, or are you going to do what you did last year and go from the semifinals on? [NOTE: Please don't do that again, start with the quarterfinals.]

How timely....

1) Paulo Vitor damo de Rosa (Brazil) - Faeries v. 8) Jamie Parke (USA) - 5CC w/Cruel

4) Frank Karsten (Netherlands) - Faeries v. 5) Tsuyoshi Ikeda (Japan) - Faeries

2) Antti Malin (Finland) - Faeries v. 7) Akira Asahara (Japan) - Faeries

3) Kenji Tsumura (Japan) - Faeries v. 6) Hannes Kerem (EST) - Kithkin

Yikes....two Faerie mirrors and Karsten's in one of them, that might be a three hour match.

Please answer my coverage question please. :D

Sooo.... six out of eight decks are faeries. Looks like we're going to have two exciting top 8s in a row.

So, should we start looking for Bitterblossom instead of Nettle Sentinel on the 20th? Looking at previous tournament results, I don't think that's too too far fetched. I just don't think they'd have enough time to build a campaign.

Edit://I hope they let us watch some Legacy for the Team Finals. With a top 8 of faeries, it would be nice to not watch the faerie deck play against something else. Extended could work too, despite my overdose of elves. But it would be great to actually watch some Legacy action.

Oops....WotC goofed the current list. Otherwise, Ikeda is playing the same 75 as Karsten :o Apparently, hes playing Blightning Beatdown (list unknown).

That's a relief.

Now if we get de Rosa-Karsten in the semifinals......we might be here watching that match until PT Kyoto

I'm hoping so... Actually, both Mistbind Clique + Bitterblossom... Else, it's time to stock up on Faeries for Regionals, as IMHO nothing will dethrone it till it rotates out then.

I think the only reason you dont see Red white Revielark in there is because only 1 person played it compared to 89 faerie decks... and he probably didnt do so well in draft/extended...

That deck... and NOT fae... is the best standard deck there imo...

As for Legacy: Cheon should be playing landstill... its WAY more his style than dreadstill, although dreadstill is probably the better deck, landstill just SCREAMS paul cheon...

Oh my god it's anoyingthe number of scrub mistakes on the coverage page. Update goes slower then slow. Half of the links are faulty (I'm actully getting good at guessing the right url's) Lot's of info on players and decks are faulty.

One question:
-Do u actully check and read what you have done to check for errors?

I don't understand how it's possible to make so many faulty links (even if actully made an effort to do it).

Yeah, specifically the link that should go to the top eight player profiles instead goes to Kenji's round 18 match. As the previous poster said, you can guess the URL (so I can be reminded that Frank is, indeed, from Eindhoven), but that's going to annoy a lot of people who can't guess the URL.

I'm looking forward to the top eight.

I expect we'll see quarters. I mean 8:45 am is pretty early to start coverage if they won't be showing that.

Of course when it comes to disappointing, they can always prove me wrong.

Oh for crying out loud....

Time Spiral/Lorwyn Standard Faeries were much stronger than the Lorwyn/Shards version and that version didn't need bannings and neither does this one.

Faeries is the best deck in Standard, but they're not that far ahead of the rest of the pack. Good grief.

Actually the more prudent question is; why is there no link to the feed on the main coverage page? If you write something like this

Tune in Sunday at 9:45 a.m. ET for the live Top 8 and National Team webcast, culminating an unforgettable season of Magic.

at the page, it *would* be a good idea to post the links right there when the time is there.

But like others have already pointed out, the website coverage isn't what it used to be... (actually, now that I recall, they never posted the links on the page... since I remember always having to go through hoops)

Edit; here is the link for you (hope this works)

Where is the link to the webcast? It's well past 9:45 AM EST now, and I still don't see the link. The front page says to check out the webcast, but how are we supposed to check it out if you don't link to it?

Edit: Thank you for finally getting it up.

Loving the constant buzzing *zmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm* noise by the way :P (lower your mids in your equalizer, i tweaked them all the way down and brought the highs up some and its sounding much better.)

Is anyone else hearing that annoying buzzing sound in the background? I watch these webcasts all the time and have never heard it this bad before. It's there in both WMP and Quicktime, so it must be something on Wizards' end. Funny since they're webcasting from the States this time...

bring the mids down on your equalizer. just bring them all the way up and you'll see which ones you need to lower all the way. I'm just glad the video isn't completely choppy like berlin. Also big ups on the non-ridiculous intro song.

Is there a higher resolution stream available?

The one I'm using is 320x240, which is fairly ridiculous considering we should be able to recognize the cards on the field.

I was thinking just now, for the past few World Championships there has been a Combo deck in the Top 8, but not this time. Also, Gab Nassif has been in a Pro Tour Top 8 every season since the 2001-2002 season (PT New York). That run came to an end as well.

Are you guys going to show the cards on the table in the Kerem-Tsumura match or just the various angles of the two players?

Nevermind - just as I posted that they finally switched to a view of the cards.

This is what I was thinking too

5 3/3 fliers meet 2 1/1 fliers and you get 9 damage 10-9=1 which means Kerem lives.

The 2nd Agony Warp wasn't meaningful I guess, but whatevs...

Sigh....on one hand, I'm sad for Frank Karsten because I was hoping he'd win a World Championship this weekend to make up for the one he was robbed of in Yokohama. On the other hand, with Karsten out the semifinal match (which would have been against either de Rosa or Parke) won't last until Alara Reborn comes out.

Also, thank you for keeping the Kenji-worship to a minimum.

OK, who wants to be the conductor for the excuse train on how Kithkin beat "OMG! FAIRIEZ IS THE MOST BESTEST BROOKEN UNBEETABLE DECKZ OF ALL THE TIMEZ!!1!! IT CAN'T LOSS!"

Randy referred to Kerem as lesser known talent after he beat Kenji, um...no he is not talented, he's terrible and if he wins i have lost faith in the means of determining the World Champion.

and Karsten is gone too? WTF is going on here?

PV has to pull through and win or im going to just constantly ask him how could he lose in Hawaii next year.

Good grief.....

Both Kenji Tsumura and Frank Karsten admitted that their quarterfinal matchups were not good for them.

Everyone gets a little lucky, like Mihara ripping that Rite off the repeal against PVR in 2006, but that doesn't mean they didn't deserve to be there. They make the plays that win the game for them.

Please either switch to the Park-da Rosa match now so we can see the deciding game 5 or put the start of it on hold. I'd much rather see that than the rest of this Malin-Asahara game 4 (or the rest of the match, for that matter).

Faeries is the hardest tier 1 deck in standard to pilot optimally. Ask any good player. There are trillions of decision trees to deal with, and they happen at instant speed. It's one of those decks that can win easily, but when you don't annhililate the opponent the game becomes 90% skill. There is a ton of management going on. with kithkin you play your guys, attack and then lean on the inherent card advantage supplied by procession, ranger of eos and cloudgoat.

You don't always win with a turn 1 Necropotence, either, but that doesn't mean it isn't an extremely powerful play. I hope PVR gets stomped by Parke just so you Faerie honks can go cry in a corner that your deck can't win the big one.

You're the one throwing a hissy fit about Faeries players losing, bubba. Don't worry though, at least one of the precious Fae will be going through to the semifinals at least.

Don't worry again, youre probably not alone. I'm sure there are plenty of Faeries players who agree with you.

I don't think its about faeries losing. It's about the players losing. Thats how it goes though. A lot of people, me included, root for the best players regardless of what deck they play.

RB saying "This is absurd, this is ridiculous" when Asahara didn't immediately extend the hand is itself absurd when he constantly gets cards and card interactions wrong. Asahara is totally justified in taking 30 seconds to make sure he's not scooping away a top 8 match, and definitely should not be taking criticism from someone who previously described a play as "Cycling Rustic Cavern".

prolepsis9 - Asahara had no cards in hand. He should have known in less than 5 seconds that it was over. So Randy got the name of the card wrong, so what? We all know what he meant, and I wouldn't be surprised if Rustic Cavern was the original name of the card.

So if 5-color control wins with a sideboarded Bitterblossom how much of a loss for Faeries is this?

Edit: the Cruel Ultimatum does change the flavor of the victory.

Misreading an onboard position is hardly rare (the spectral procession tokens, doran+warhammer, etc etc etc) and it's at least a $4000 mistake if he scoops overlooking something. Maybe it's different if he stalls ingraciously, but he took 30 seconds with outs for the win if he survives the turn. In no way should RB be berating that decision.

hmm? that doesn't even relate to what i said. i'm still excited for the top 4, just sad to see the big names go thats all. forums are hilarious

I predict it'll be jamie parke v. Hannes Kerem (but i hope its antti malin) in the finals. in which case jamie parke will most likely win (unless he play antti, then its anyones game :P)

Well, I got half of my predictions right. Blightning destroyed Faeries and Kithkin won 3-2, but I thought maindeck Peppersmoke would be bigger, and that Scion of Oona would be important in the mirror (it has been from my experience). And Parke's plan fell into place pretty well. I'm not sure I would keep a hand without Bitterblossom in that matchup...ah well, that was a nice play, tapping Paulo out for Cruel Ultimatum.

Sorry, I read it as 'the most boring top 4 ever'. Anyway, I still don't see how this could be more anti-climactic than 4 Faeries deck jockeying for Bitterblossom advantage for 3 matches.

Yeah that was his 3rd Standard win -.-
Even if he wins the tournament, QNT is still clearly a bad Standard deck.

He is now 3-3-1 in standard counting the qf win. decidedly average, but great players did far worse than that with the same deck. It doesn't look like the 5cc deck that a lot of the great players played fulfilled what 5cc is supposed to be able to do, and that is adapt to any environment. Not sure if they didn't read the metagame right or what.

I probably shouldn't have said it at that time, but I meant it to mean that he was already in a pretty dominating position and Cruel pretty much just was win-more at that time.

Huh? What? OK, how is Standard stale?

Its not 95% Faeries. There are PLENTY of good decks in Standard.

Faeries
GB Elves
MonoRed
Blightning Beatdown
Kithkin
WR kithkin
Reveillark.dec (all its versions WR, WUB, etc.)
5 Color Control (with and without Cruel)
The Black-White Token deck
Merfolk

I'm sure I'm even missing 4 or 5 different archetypes.

3 of the 5 6-0 decks were Faeries.
The other two both had Figure of Destiny.
It seems pretty stale to me.

I'm not that familiar with Legacy so its not obvious to me.

I can see that Takakuwa is trying to lock up the board and basically keep his opponents from doing much, but how does he actually win the game? Unless I'm missing something, it seems as if he's trying to swing 10 times with a Magus of the Tabernacle?

NOTE: I see the Exalted Angels in the sideboard, too. What's his game 1 plan?

If anybody on the coverage staff is watching: The name of the Japanese Legacy deck is "Armageddon Stax".

Didn't Buehler or BDM say earlier that Cheon would most probably win Legacy, Oiso would most probably win Extended, and this match would come down to the Standard match? So why did the coverage start with Legacy, shift to Extended, and now back to Legacy?

It'd be nice to see something other than Standard this weekend. Don't forget about the fact that we're seeing a whole lot of Standard from the individual competition.

Man, am I missing something here? There is bolded text that says "Click here to watch the top 8 now!" but you can't actually click it, because it's text.

And where is the webcast for the Legacy format as well? I don't see anything on that. Apologies if this is obvious and I'm just missing it, but I don't see ****!

Ikeda had a hand of 3 land vs a 7/7 cloudthresher with nothing but a man land. and was dead in 2 hits he had zero chance of winning without a burn spell that turn even assuming his opponent had no counters.

Ikeda probably thought that Jamie bounced the Spiteful Visions with the trigger on the stack, so Jamie would draw two cards and only take one damage.

Parke shouldn't have killed the Spiteful Visions.

He should have attacked with the Thresher, dropped Ikeda down to 5, then still in the combat phase Condemn the Thresher. That would put him at 17. Pass the turn, Ikeda's BB and SV drop him to 3. With six lands open, he can't deal 15 damage to Parke, and then just pass back.

Parke should have used the Esper Charm to make his opponent draw two cards so that the visions could have dealt the 2 final points of damage. Thats the best play he could have done.

that is actually the worst play. he gets 3 cards then before he draws the 4th, and burning him out is a real possibility then. and it doesnt target lol.

Also, I like how they're embracing the fact that the card names have been spoiled. They're playing with that fact pretty well.

Same problem here, but a restart of the WMP stream fom the webcast page fixed it.

As for Nicol Bolas, probably yes. Horribly expensive, but broken nonetheless.

If memory serves, the 4th US team member that played Stompy was Frank Hernandez.

Edit: Nope, that was 2000. It was Bryce Currence.

I agree. I think there will be eventually a debate over whether he is a win-more card in 5ccish decks.

Also, I hope we get to see some more Legacy. No more elves please.

Hey BDM/Randy, Black runs Predator Dragon, Orzhov Pontiff, and Mirror Entity.

I mean, I'm sure you just read down to M under creatures and called it a day, but I actually enjoy listening to you two and want to help you out

Wow the US team are such a bunch of punks. Judge should call them up on gamesmanship. Jacob is the worst talking smack and slapping the cards around. SGC top deck is just good karma.

Funny, I was just thinking how much I'd like to play against him. He seems like an enjoyable opponent. Hate to see him on tilt, that could get nasty, but still.

(Also, to BDM/Randy: Chrome/Diamond are newly unrestricted.)

Did I say he was trying to be nice? I enjoy a little bit of banter with my games, especially because I tend to get chatty when I'm on edge and playing Magic always puts me a little bit on edge.

I'm just saying I think it's funny how, when I had that opinion and came here to post it, the comment I see is the polar opposite of mine, is all.

Wouldn't cracking the fetchland for green mana have brought his deck one card too low even after Cheon gets the three cards from standstill?

edit: I guess it wouldn't have mattered anyway if he had already drawn the tropical island.

Was the second Bitterblossom a mistake? Then Parke uses the Esper Charm on it and he can play the second one after?

Perhaps Jund Charm was always going to have a telling effect either way.

can we get an update about wat JP is bringing in/out for each game, same for AM?
Edit: I agree with BDM that rhox war monk early in the game is not good, because of sower in AM's decklist.

I wouldn't have necessarily taken it out maybe cut it down to 3 but it's a very good late game threat because he can just keep swinging with it and theoretically outlast the bitterblossoms in AM's deck, also since he probably brought in his own blossoms it keeps him alive.

To BDM and Randy: I appreciate as ever your excellent commentary, however on this occasion I feel that you have made an error. As one of your many, many international listeners I feel that you are presenting (consciously or otherwise) the match in a partisan way. I know that you are personally familiar with your countryman Mr Parke, but nonetheless feel that you shouldn't appear to be supporting him through talking about his side of the story and America's attempt to clinch all the titles to the exclusion of the equal effort of the Finn.

I would appreciate your consideration in this matter.

Bout time the Fae took down a major tourne (GP aren't major). Also glad to see the US kept of the full sweep, they are getting to cocky and the bias commentry made it feel like the Finn was an underdog. The Podcast is international so bias coverage is not appreciated.

I didn't think it was biased at all. I think both BDM and Buehler have always been neutral, even when commenting on games with players from the USA.

GPs aren't major tournaments? With player turn outs sometimes over a 1000, they are some of the hardest tournaments to win. Day 2 of a GP is basically as hard as any Pro Tour.

I was rooting for Kenji just cause I wanted him to finally get his due. Anywho congrats Malin and go USA!! woot we won.

Eeeh. Rounds 1-5 are generally byes for a decent player, 6-7 you randomly hit a pro, and 8-9 are usually the only real tough rounds. At a PT you hit pro's during any given round.

In all fairness, had Kenji advanced they would have continued slurping over him the entire time. :P

Again, to be fair, look at Parke's matchups in the quarters and semis. Parke admitted that his deck stinks and that certain things had to happen for him to stand a chance against Paulo Vitor damo de Rosa and then he was just as bad a dog against Ikeda's Blightning Beatdown (I guess getting extra cards via Spiteful Visions when youre beating with Rhox War Monk helped :embarrass ) Parke won both those matches. Momentum and good fortune seemed to be in Parke's favor. The way he was going it would not have surprised me if he had topdecked the other Cloudthresher in game 4 against Malin.

Then the only major tournaments are PTs? There have exactly been many T2 PTs since Morningtide came out.
