This thread is to discuss the 2008 Magic World Championships, taking place in Memphis on December 11-14. The Top 8 webcast will be Sunday, Dec. 14 starting at 9:45 a.m. ET. I thought Randy Buehler got fired? I was saddened when I saw that news, but now seeing him in the video here, maybe it was not true?
Also, anyone know where to find decklists for the Game in the Gulf Championship from Magic Online?

I know I should be happy there is coverage at all, but for 8 people working on coverage you'd think that in 3 hours from their last update they would have stuff to put up, going from round 1 to round 4 (probably actually round 5 there) and having nothing up makes me wonder what they are doing over there...

I agree that coverage is SORELY LACKING. I've been returning to the site about once an hour all day... and just to find round 1 coverage! For all the "bringing Magic back to the people" stance we've been hearing about lately, this does NOT seem to do the trick. FROWNS

An hour later and still nothing, I'm sure they are on their final round of play by now, or just starting it, at this point I'd rather them just wait until day one finishes and put everything up at once, instead of pieces every couple(LOL, couple) hours..

Faeries was fine as long as it was selling new packs. But if it's still so good that it's limiting Shards and Conflux sales, well gosh maybe they'll have to do something. (Honestly I doubt it, but I wouldn't mind seeing something like Caltrops or Aether Flash get printed.)

I thought Randy Buehler got fired? I was saddened when I saw that news, but now seeing him in the video here, maybe it was not true? He was. Only that WotC (likely) already purchased the airlines tickets, and in his facebook blog post Randy said that he was under contract to do commentary for Worlds. However, starting at GP:LA, he was going to be a Magic Pro Player again.
IMHO: This may be one of his last Commentary shows, unless WotC agrees to contract him and BDM to continue doing it in the future. After all, Randy doesn't have to be an Employee to continue doing that part. If that doesn't happen, I can see the PTs starting in 2009 having the shows being commented by BDM and Rich Hagon.

Where is the *NEW* video Multimedia Coverage for the Hall of Fame?
When I checked it last night, all I saw was links to previously available downloadable material, and even then... Not all of the Hall of Famers were representative in that material.
So, what happened to this year's HoF newly released video coverage material?

If Olivier top 4's and Shuhei finishes outside the top 200, the he is Player of the Year, correct? But if Shuhei cracks the top 200 then Oli needs to finals or win... If Olivier wins, that would be so awesome...his first tournament as a Hall of Famer---World Champion AND Player of the Year from a 14-point deficit Shuhei must be kicking himself

Anyone got the lists for the top 8 matches? I know that de Rosa, Karsten, and Asahara are all running the Fae.
We got...
1) Paulo Vitor damo de Rosa (Brazil) - Faeries v. 8) Jamie Parke (USA) - ???
4) Frank Karsten (Netherlands) - Faeries v. 5) Tsuyoshi Ikeda (Japan) - ???
2) Antti Malin (Finland) - ??? v. 7) Akira Asahara (Japan) - Faeries
3) Kenji Tsumura (Japan) - ??? v. 6) Hannes Kerem (EST) - ???
What's EST? :o
How's the coverage going to work tomorrow? Are we going to see the whole top 8, or are you going to do what you did last year and go from the semifinals on? [NOTE: Please don't do that again, start with the quarterfinals.]

4) Frank Karsten (Netherlands) - Faeries v. 5) Tsuyoshi Ikeda (Japan) - Faeries
2) Antti Malin (Finland) - Faeries v. 7) Akira Asahara (Japan) - Faeries
3) Kenji Tsumura (Japan) - Faeries v. 6) Hannes Kerem (EST) - Kithkin
Yikes....two Faerie mirrors and Karsten's in one of them, that might be a three hour match.
Please answer my coverage question please. :D

Sooo.... six out of eight decks are faeries. Looks like we're going to have two exciting top 8s in a row.
So, should we start looking for Bitterblossom instead of Nettle Sentinel on the 20th? Looking at previous tournament results, I don't think that's too too far fetched. I just don't think they'd have enough time to build a campaign.
Edit://I hope they let us watch some Legacy for the Team Finals. With a top 8 of faeries, it would be nice to not watch the faerie deck play against something else. Extended could work too, despite my overdose of elves. But it would be great to actually watch some Legacy action.

I think the only reason you dont see Red white Revielark in there is because only 1 person played it compared to 89 faerie decks... and he probably didnt do so well in draft/extended...
That deck... and NOT fae... is the best standard deck there imo...
As for Legacy: Cheon should be playing landstill... its WAY more his style than dreadstill, although dreadstill is probably the better deck, landstill just SCREAMS paul cheon...

Oh my god it's anoyingthe number of scrub mistakes on the coverage page. Update goes slower then slow. Half of the links are faulty (I'm actully getting good at guessing the right url's) Lot's of info on players and decks are faulty.
One question: -Do u actully check and read what you have done to check for errors?
I don't understand how it's possible to make so many faulty links (even if actully made an effort to do it).

Yeah, specifically the link that should go to the top eight player profiles instead goes to Kenji's round 18 match. As the previous poster said, you can guess the URL (so I can be reminded that Frank is, indeed, from Eindhoven), but that's going to annoy a lot of people who can't guess the URL.
I'm looking forward to the top eight.

Time Spiral/Lorwyn Standard Faeries were much stronger than the Lorwyn/Shards version and that version didn't need bannings and neither does this one.
Faeries is the best deck in Standard, but they're not that far ahead of the rest of the pack. Good grief.

I really should bookmark this, but does anyone have the WMV (non-QT) link to the feed? Actually the more prudent question is; why is there no link to the feed on the main coverage page? If you write something like this
Tune in Sunday at 9:45 a.m. ET for the live Top 8 and National Team webcast, culminating an unforgettable season of Magic. at the page, it *would* be a good idea to post the links right there when the time is there.
But like others have already pointed out, the website coverage isn't what it used to be... (actually, now that I recall, they never posted the links on the page... since I remember always having to go through hoops)
Edit; here is the link for you (hope this works) mms://a436.l1897952435.c18979.g.lm.akamaistream.net/D/436/18979/v0001/reflector:52435

bring the mids down on your equalizer. just bring them all the way up and you'll see which ones you need to lower all the way. I'm just glad the video isn't completely choppy like berlin. Also big ups on the non-ridiculous intro song.

I was thinking just now, for the past few World Championships there has been a Combo deck in the Top 8, but not this time. Also, Gab Nassif has been in a Pro Tour Top 8 every season since the 2001-2002 season (PT New York). That run came to an end as well.

Randy-BDM, those were flier tokens from Spectral Procession. This is what I was thinking too
5 3/3 fliers meet 2 1/1 fliers and you get 9 damage 10-9=1 which means Kerem lives.

Sigh....on one hand, I'm sad for Frank Karsten because I was hoping he'd win a World Championship this weekend to make up for the one he was robbed of in Yokohama. On the other hand, with Karsten out the semifinal match (which would have been against either de Rosa or Parke) won't last until Alara Reborn comes out.
Also, thank you for keeping the Kenji-worship to a minimum.

Yep, riding a turn 2 Bitterblossom to victory take a bunch of skill. You got me there, captain. Faeries is the hardest tier 1 deck in standard to pilot optimally. Ask any good player. There are trillions of decision trees to deal with, and they happen at instant speed. It's one of those decks that can win easily, but when you don't annhililate the opponent the game becomes 90% skill. There is a ton of management going on. with kithkin you play your guys, attack and then lean on the inherent card advantage supplied by procession, ranger of eos and cloudgoat.

RB saying "This is absurd, this is ridiculous" when Asahara didn't immediately extend the hand is itself absurd when he constantly gets cards and card interactions wrong. Asahara is totally justified in taking 30 seconds to make sure he's not scooping away a top 8 match, and definitely should not be taking criticism from someone who previously described a play as "Cycling Rustic Cavern".

We all know what he meant, and I wouldn't be surprised if Rustic Cavern was the original name of the card. Misreading an onboard position is hardly rare (the spectral procession tokens, doran+warhammer, etc etc etc) and it's at least a $4000 mistake if he scoops overlooking something. Maybe it's different if he stalls ingraciously, but he took 30 seconds with outs for the win if he survives the turn. In no way should RB be berating that decision.

Well, I got half of my predictions right. Blightning destroyed Faeries and Kithkin won 3-2, but I thought maindeck Peppersmoke would be bigger, and that Scion of Oona would be important in the mirror (it has been from my experience). And Parke's plan fell into place pretty well. I'm not sure I would keep a hand without Bitterblossom in that matchup...ah well, that was a nice play, tapping Paulo out for Cruel Ultimatum.

So that was what.... Jamie's 2nd win in Standard @ worlds this week? Maybe 3rd...? He is now 3-3-1 in standard counting the qf win. decidedly average, but great players did far worse than that with the same deck. It doesn't look like the 5cc deck that a lot of the great players played fulfilled what 5cc is supposed to be able to do, and that is adapt to any environment. Not sure if they didn't read the metagame right or what.

I can see that Takakuwa is trying to lock up the board and basically keep his opponents from doing much, but how does he actually win the game? Unless I'm missing something, it seems as if he's trying to swing 10 times with a Magus of the Tabernacle?

Ikeda had a hand of 3 land vs a 7/7 cloudthresher with nothing but a man land. and was dead in 2 hits he had zero chance of winning without a burn spell that turn even assuming his opponent had no counters.

Ikeda probably thought that Jamie bounced the Spiteful Visions with the trigger on the stack, so Jamie would draw two cards and only take one damage.

Parke shouldn't have killed the Spiteful Visions.
He should have attacked with the Thresher, dropped Ikeda down to 5, then still in the combat phase Condemn the Thresher. That would put him at 17. Pass the turn, Ikeda's BB and SV drop him to 3. With six lands open, he can't deal 15 damage to Parke, and then just pass back.

can we get an update about wat JP is bringing in/out for each game, same for AM? Edit: I agree with BDM that rhox war monk early in the game is not good, because of sower in AM's decklist.

agreed i would have taken it out in the 2nd game I wouldn't have necessarily taken it out maybe cut it down to 3 but it's a very good late game threat because he can just keep swinging with it and theoretically outlast the bitterblossoms in AM's deck, also since he probably brought in his own blossoms it keeps him alive.

To BDM and Randy: I appreciate as ever your excellent commentary, however on this occasion I feel that you have made an error. As one of your many, many international listeners I feel that you are presenting (consciously or otherwise) the match in a partisan way. I know that you are personally familiar with your countryman Mr Parke, but nonetheless feel that you shouldn't appear to be supporting him through talking about his side of the story and America's attempt to clinch all the titles to the exclusion of the equal effort of the Finn.
I would appreciate your consideration in this matter.

well amtti malin is pretty much the world champion at this point never count the 5cc deck out of it, he still has many answers to the threats that antti malin is playing, plus he's still at 16 life.

Told ya it's not as bad as everyone thinks, he is getting unlucky because he's drawn like 4 lands in a row.

I've kind of ignored Bitterblossom in the past, but I'd be curious what the correlation to drawing it to winning the game.

Bout time the Fae took down a major tourne (GP aren't major). Also glad to see the US kept of the full sweep, they are getting to cocky and the bias commentry made it feel like the Finn was an underdog. The Podcast is international so bias coverage is not appreciated.

I think both BDM and Buehler have always been neutral, even when commenting on games with players from the USA.

GPs aren't major tournaments? With player turn outs sometimes over a 1000, they are some of the hardest tournaments to win. Day 2 of a GP is basically as hard as any Pro Tour. I was rooting for Kenji just cause I wanted him to finally get his due. Anywho congrats Malin and go USA!! woot we won.

Day 2 of a GP is basically as hard as any Pro Tour. Eeeh. Rounds 1-5 are generally byes for a decent player, 6-7 you randomly hit a pro, and 8-9 are usually the only real tough rounds. At a PT you hit pro's during any given round.

The Podcast is international so bias coverage is not appreciated. In all fairness, had Kenji advanced they would have continued slurping over him the entire time. :P
Again, to be fair, look at Parke's matchups in the quarters and semis. Parke admitted that his deck stinks and that certain things had to happen for him to stand a chance against Paulo Vitor damo de Rosa and then he was just as bad a dog against Ikeda's Blightning Beatdown (I guess getting extra cards via Spiteful Visions when youre beating with Rhox War Monk helped :embarrass ) Parke won both those matches. Momentum and good fortune seemed to be in Parke's favor. The way he was going it would not have surprised me if he had topdecked the other Cloudthresher in game 4 against Malin.
