This thread is to discuss the 2008 Magic World Championships, taking place in Memphis on December 11-14.

The Top 8 webcast will be Sunday, Dec. 14 starting at 9:45 a.m. ET. Here's a handy time zone guide to figure out when that is in your neighborhood:

Los Angeles: 6:45 a.m
Chicago: 8:45 a.m.
Rio de Janeiro: 12:45 p.m.
London: 2:45 a.m.
Berlin: 3:45 a.m.

I thought Randy Buehler got fired? I was saddened when I saw that news, but now seeing him in the video here, maybe it was not true?

I know I should be happy there is coverage at all, but for 8 people working on coverage you'd think that in 3 hours from their last update they would have stuff to put up, going from round 1 to round 4 (probably actually round 5 there) and having nothing up makes me wonder what they are doing over there...

An hour later and still nothing, I'm sure they are on their final round of play by now, or just starting it, at this point I'd rather them just wait until day one finishes and put everything up at once, instead of pieces every couple(LOL, couple) hours..

Something tells me, if those matchups are any sign, that Faeries are as much on a watch list as ELVES! is...

heh 3/5 of the 6-0 decks are Fairies.... so much for that "amazing" BW deck.

I really like the RW Vengeant Lark Deck.

When wizard coverage will post the others t2 top deck lists?

He was. Only that WotC (likely) already purchased the airlines tickets, and in his facebook blog post Randy said that he was under contract to do commentary for Worlds. However, starting at GP:LA, he was going to be a Magic Pro Player again.


IMHO: This may be one of his last Commentary shows, unless WotC agrees to contract him and BDM to continue doing it in the future. After all, Randy doesn't have to be an Employee to continue doing that part. If that doesn't happen, I can see the PTs starting in 2009 having the shows being commented by BDM and Rich Hagon.

If Olivier loses in the Semifinals, the France team finishes outside of the top 16 and Shuhei finishes outside of the top 200, then they end up tied with 69 points.

Too bad the coverage is lagging behind again.

From what I've read elsewhere, it seems the top 8 is already clear.

It looks like japan and US are going to meet in the semis for the team competition.

Why can't i watch the top 8?? Im in Berlin and the clock is 04.15 a.m.

Anyone got the lists for the top 8 matches? I know that de Rosa, Karsten, and Asahara are all running the Fae.

How's the coverage going to work tomorrow? Are we going to see the whole top 8, or are you going to do what you did last year and go from the semifinals on? [NOTE: Please don't do that again, start with the quarterfinals.]

They should eventually make all the decklists available.

Oops....WotC goofed the current list. Otherwise, Ikeda is playing the same 75 as Karsten :o Apparently, hes playing Blightning Beatdown (list unknown).

That's a relief.

Now if we get de Rosa-Karsten in the semifinals......we might be here watching that match until PT Kyoto

Oh my god it's anoyingthe number of scrub mistakes on the coverage page. Update goes slower then slow. Half of the links are faulty (I'm actully getting good at guessing the right url's) Lot's of info on players and decks are faulty.

One question:
-Do u actully check and read what you have done to check for errors?

I don't understand how it's possible to make so many faulty links (even if actully made an effort to do it).

I expect we'll see quarters. I mean 8:45 am is pretty early to start coverage if they won't be showing that.

Of course when it comes to disappointing, they can always prove me wrong.

Blightning Beatdown list is fixed in the top 8.

Where is the link to the webcast? It's well past 9:45 AM EST now, and I still don't see the link. The front page says to check out the webcast, but how are we supposed to check it out if you don't link to it?

Is anyone else hearing that annoying buzzing sound in the background? I watch these webcasts all the time and have never heard it this bad before. It's there in both WMP and Quicktime, so it must be something on Wizards' end. Funny since they're webcasting from the States this time...

Is there a higher resolution stream available?

The one I'm using is 320x240, which is fairly ridiculous considering we should be able to recognize the cards on the field.

At least we can see it :P ... just too bad though that almost everything Wotc does wich involves something digital is like 10 years stuck in the past. Even theire youtube videos usually have an astounding low quality

This is what I was thinking too

5 3/3 fliers meet 2 1/1 fliers and you get 9 damage 10-9=1 which means Kerem lives.

Sigh....on one hand, I'm sad for Frank Karsten because I was hoping he'd win a World Championship this weekend to make up for the one he was robbed of in Yokohama. On the other hand, with Karsten out the semifinal match (which would have been against either de Rosa or Parke) won't last until Alara Reborn comes out.

Also, thank you for keeping the Kenji-worship to a minimum.

I don't think its about faeries losing. It's about the players losing. Thats how it goes though. A lot of people, me included, root for the best players regardless of what deck they play.

RB saying "This is absurd, this is ridiculous" when Asahara didn't immediately extend the hand is itself absurd when he constantly gets cards and card interactions wrong. Asahara is totally justified in taking 30 seconds to make sure he's not scooping away a top 8 match, and definitely should not be taking criticism from someone who previously described a play as "Cycling Rustic Cavern".

Misreading an onboard position is hardly rare (the spectral procession tokens, doran+warhammer, etc etc etc) and it's at least a $4000 mistake if he scoops overlooking something. Maybe it's different if he stalls ingraciously, but he took 30 seconds with outs for the win if he survives the turn. In no way should RB be berating that decision.
