that the word "etheric" does not work grammatically as a name for a creature ability, as it is an adjective and not a noun. Ha. Like "flying", "flanking", "fading", "suspend", and so on, those well-known nouns?

Okay, so I can see how Humility and licids could cause problems, but what was the deal with Escaped Shapeshifter?

Okay, so I can see how Humility and licids could cause problems, but what was the deal with Escaped Shapeshifter? I'm not sure, but I believe it may have something to do with the errata on it : the "not named Escaped Shapeshifter" phrase in Oracle text was not on the printed text. Apparently, having one Shapeshifter on each side of the field caused rules issues. I don't really see how, tough; it seems to me that in that situation, both shapeshifters would simply have got all the relevant abilities that any creature on either side have, since each shapeshifter would get the abilities of its controller's other creatures trough the opponent's shapeshifter.

Ha. Like "flying", "flanking", "fading", "suspend", and so on, those well-known nouns? Flying, flanking, and fading can be considered gerunds (e.g. "the state or act of being in flight") and thus nouns, in addition to their more standard adjectival meanings. That said, I think keywords work better as adjectives than nouns. Suspend is (in part) an activated ability and thus uses an imperative verb, just like forecast and convoke. (Or is convoke a static ability? In any event, it's still an actively-used ability rather than a passive one.)

And if one of those ability-granting creatures left play, what happens? Do they both lose the ability, or do both shapeshifters keep the ability because the other shapeshifter has it?

I find it very amusing that MaRo's original attempt at Licids is pretty much the same as his original attempt at Evoke.

Just like Joenic2, I also still have those issues saved. Still read them from time to time too.
And they name a few good cards from tempest to wet everyone's appetite allready but let's not forget what it also brought us for the first time:
Mogg fanatic.
It was allready good when it came out to play but then sixth edition rules came around and it got even better. Those were the days.
