Sigh.....Rob Dougherty is a great guy, an excellent player...and a terrible TO. His store leads the way for Magic north of Neutral Ground, but I feel that there really hasn't been much room for another TO to run a large tournament.

A few examples....

At a small Vs System prerelease I got a Foil Bizarro. This gimmick was that all of his text was 'bizarro' and thus backwards. I couldn't read it for the life of me, so I went and asked Rob who was the Judge. He said "I don't know, figure it out."

At....I believe it was the Betrayers prerelease there was a HUGE snowstorm at the Bayside Expo Center in Boston. For the past several years previous, many tournaments were held there. The snow started to get so bad (More than 2 feet) that Rob was told that he needed to shut down for Liablity reasons. He told them No. At the time I thought this was the right move at first because I wanted to play and had a Hotel Room across the street. However, at least 50-60 people had to sleep on site because they couldn't make it home safely, which was exactly what the people at Bayside didn't want. We have yet to have a tournament at Bayside since.

Any of Rob's tournaments take FOREVER for results to get put in. I believe my personal record is 5 1/2 weeks for a PTQ. Thats just terrible. Every tournament is started late. Oh and the Judges are given terrible compensation.

I hate just tossing this all at Mr. Dougherty, since he is a great player and Store owner, but when it comes to a New England, Tom Shea is really just a much better TO.

Also....Total Rating? I'm Totally confused. How is this different than composite?

I think that this new system is really interesting.
If i understood correctly, the difference with Composite is :
Composite is calculated that way : Constructed + Limited / 2
When the new rating will be calculated match after match, with the formula including the Kvalue. For example : Your new rating is 1750, you win in constructed against a player with 1950, you will win alot of points, as you would have for your constructed rating.

As a mainly eternal player who started playing competitivly constructed and limited recently, I'm really excited by those changes.

If the new Pro Tour invitation policy is totally clear for me, I have 2 questions non adressed in this article :

- What rating will you use to award GPs Byes ? The rating of the GP format or the General Rating ? Or the best of two, like composite actually ?

- What rating will be used to award invitation to nationals ? This New rating ? Or will composite still exist and be the rating for national invitations ?

That would be nice to have some eternal players to nationals... Way to make them playing standart and limited. Really interesting.

Composite is a flat average of Limited and Constructed. Lets say you did really well at a GP years ago, and your constructed rating is 1900. But you stopped playing constructed after that and only draft now, with a rating there around 1700.

Limited: 1700, 2000 matches, last game: Oct 2008
Constructed 1900, 50 matches, last game: June 2002
Composite: 1800. It doesn't matter that one had more matches or was more recent.

Total Rating (as I understand it) is different because first of all it will include Eternal and Team ratings. But also it pushes everything together for a weighted average and take everything in chronological order.

In that hypothetical example, those Constructed wins are way in the past while the less impressive Limited play is more recent. So the Total rating would be 1700, maybe 1701.

Will GP byes still be based on the Limited/Constructed rating or on the total? In other words, will this guy i know who hasn't played a constructed match yet receive 2 byes on a constructed GP because he has a 1944 limited rating after gp paris?

State champion card?

ROLF!

The fiasco of the Pro-Player cards haven't taught WotC anything? At this rate, I'll never run out of toilet paper.

I'm sure he meant the state champion cards are sent out to replace each individual winners' personal DCI card. They won't go into packs, obviously - the mock-up has the person's DCI number and other personal info.

I guess I didn't know how much Steve (from my local store) ran. The Madison store does have good space for tournaments, and everything I have been to was well run, and a lot of fun. The cruise is a great idea. He's totally right that you need to be passionate about something you do, if you want to get other people involved and hooked. This is often what also leads to well-accepted new ideas, like the cruise.

Thanks to all the Local T.O.s!

Intro to BDM's article:

It has been a year of change for the Magic Organized Play programs as resources have been shifted around to create the Wizards Play Network, a new grassroots Organized Play program designed to acquire a broader player base. The changing tournament scene has also led to an entrepreneurial surge on the part of North American tournament organizers, bringing about the return of State and Provincial Championships in North America, spawning abundant tournaments with prize pools up to $5,000, and christening a cruise concept that will set sail just in time for the Conflux release.

Translated, this reads:

"Yes, Organized Play has yet again made another bad decision (re: PTs, prereleases, states, et al.). But look on the bright side folks. Some of the TOs with COMMON SENSE have brought back what little they can."

As far as Total rating is concerned, I'm not going to assume _anything_. I'd like to know exactly how it's calculated. No amount of forum-user speculation is going to actually help clear up the ambiguous description in the article.
