@ the article name. Someone's been reading the MTGO boards.
And so people say to me, "How do I know if a word is real?" You know, anyone who's read a children's book knows that love makes things real. If you love a word, use it! That makes it real. Being in the dictionary is an artificial distinction; it doesn't make the word any more real than any other word. If you love a word, it becomes real. --Erin McKean, Redefining the Dictionary

So very confused.
Edit: Just got it. Slow I am.
Good article. Lots of developing going on.

Eventide development also found that this Sidekick had a bizarre, unintended side interaction. When you attacked your opponent in Limited, and your opponent played a giant growth or a partly-green hybrid instant during combat, after combat you could play out your Elvish Sidekick off of your opponent's green spell. This was counter-intuitive and did not fit the intent of the card, so developers changed it to piggyback from only your own green spells. The intent was NOT cool strategic things? HOW GREEN!
(p.s. my vote for that mechanic is Ophidian but I'm probably WAY off.)

The biggest hint about [SECRET MECHANIC] is that the original card, 3/3 haste with the mechanic, felt red. For some reason I keep getting the impression of:
When this creature goes into a graveyard from play, it deals damage equal to its power to target creature or player.
It would certainly make the sac effect make it a "lot" better, but at the same time it doesn't justify the "broken" or "maybe green?" comments. Ophidian's ability doesn't strike me as something that would lead to that.

Guys it also needs to justify being a secret.

No, it's not Ophidian or a simple leaves-play trigger. It would have to be something we haven't seen before or there wouldn't be any reason for it to remain a secret. Either that or a keyword. It has something to do with hurting creatures (or perhaps planeswalkers, but more likely creatures), it has something that would mean putting it into the graveyard was a good thing, and it's awesome with something like AEther Flash, which deals damage to creatures when they come into play.

I was thinking something like whenever a creature or player is dealt damage, put that many +1/+1 counters on all creatures. (possibly creatures you control, but that would be incredibly ridiculous)

I keep reading "fop" in the title instead of "elf".

I keep reading "fop" in the title instead of "elf". This is what got me confused as well.
