I believe this card owes its existence to the fact that I found it entertaining to try and get this card into a set. And trust me, this is far from the only one. In before anyone else makes a joke.
But keep doing it, MaRo. I like it.
Just to put into context the power level of creatures during the time of Urza's Saga block, look at these two cards side by side: Were you going for "weak, but we thought they were stronger than Bargain"? Cause that's what I read.

Interesting that he mentioned the art of Elves of Deep Shadow, seeing as it is one of the few Magic arts on my walls. There was one other elf that was more noted for being a female than this one, however, and it's conspicuously missing from the article.

I liked this article. Very designy. It should be noted that he recycled, or nearly did, his text for Medicine Runner from his Moor design article.

Nice article. I was actually surprised about MaRo's revelation that Civic Wayfinder hadn't been printed yet; since the first time I saw it I had taken it to be a Wood Elves variant. Also, I wanted to point out that, although it seems like people usually miss it (and admittedly it's not always like this, but still), Defiant Elf was not [card=Llanowar Elite] the first 1/1 trampler for .[/card]

We often have cards that improve or net you a bonus when other things are played or come into play (I hate that "play" means two different things in the same sentence). I agree. Too bad its so rooted in the game already. It would be nice to say a person is casting a spell instead of playing a spell. It would make many things a lot more clearer, but then again, its not that confusing.
Anyway, just though it was an interesting tidbit.

I had an Invasion block aggressive green/red "kicker" deck built around Saproling Infestation, almost everything had kicker, and Llanowar Elite still wasn't good enough to make the cut.

Safehold Elite used to be a Newt too? :P Yes! MaRo gets a for the Monty Python reference. "She turned me into a NEWT! .....I got better."

I'm guessing you are referring to the second art for Elvish Ranger that also conspicuously isn't in Gatherer?
Richard got it right out of the gate and while I feel we've done some excellent elf designs nothing, in my mind, eclipses the original elf. Awesome!! I'm still looking for Beta Llanowars simply because it's my favorite creature.
