This article really strikes a chord with me. I've made so many friends that I would never socialize with in RL if not for Magic. And that is one of the best things about the game. I liked the article because it was one of those "stop and smell the roses" sort of things and we all need to do that from time to time.

I liked the Ferrett but I'm not a Multiplayer guy, so I'm looking forward to what these new series of articles will bring.

First, I really enjoyed the article, and I thank you for it.

Second, I'd like to respond to this:

However, I was quite disturbed about the whole 'Gurls like Magic too!' schpiel. My past girlfriends have all been into Magic to some degree, but if I got with a woman who viewed me as a lesser person because I play a cardgame that to the average person is geeky and for kids, then that doesn't sound much like a woman I want to be with. Grow a spine, have some self-respect!

That's great for you, but it doesn't change the fact that this game is still dominated by males. And that's ok! I was at the Indianapolis pre-release, and I counted maybe 4 girls playing total on both days combined. If you are honest, you would have to admit that we don't have a lot of girls playing when compared to the guys .

Welcome Jacob! Good writing.

Serious Fun]In fact, if they're really worth their salt, they'll probably think it's cute and endearing.

Dunno about that. Sounds a bit condescending to me. But then perhaps I've been spoiled - most of the girls I know are gamers themselves.

What's Your Story?

First saw the game a few weeks after it made it to the UK. Didn't think much of it. First bought cards when Ice Age came out. Still not impressed.

I became more interested in Magic when MtGO was released and I noticed Wizards had started designing their sets properly. Since then I've played a mixture of Casual (mostly Multiplayer) and Limited. I almost never play in real life (maybe once a year at most) - my Magic friends are the guys who hang around the Limited board on Salvation.

To be honest, I wish my experiences with Magic were anything like yours. Unfortunately, the only players I seem to run into (other than online) are hyper-competitive jerks, which is one of the big reasons I no longer play. I'm reasonably certain though, from what I've seen at Gen Con, that the actual competitive players are a lot nicer than the local wannabes.

Besides, Team Fortress 2 is cheaper. There's something deeply wrong with that fact.

This is Ben Jaffe, from Jakes article. First, everyone needs to stop getting down on him for writing an introduction article to himself, who he is as a magic player, and why he plays magic. Believe me for all of you more hardcore gamers out there he has a never ending supply of magic to talk about...so dont worry about that. Secondly, MTG, Jake and the other people mentioned in that article really saved me from a few hard semesters at school where I really needed an escape from things. So I understand and agree with everything he is saying. Third, yes you did party a little too hard after regionals, and an Un-named person's rug may never be the same because of it. Fourth, if anyone ever sees Jake ask him about the events that went on that following weekend after we met him.

I loved the response your dad gave your mom, Jacob, especially since I grew up at the Shore myself (many moons ago; I'm probably closed to his age than yours) and wasted many a dollar at DQ and Kohr's - and still do every summer - and it sounds exactly like something I'd say to my own wife. Fun article, thanks!

Edit: As far as what *my* story is, I started back in Beta. Still have a 'Twister I cracked from a pack. Turned my nose up at it at first, because I was more of a role-player and it was "just a card game." But it sucked me in. Now? I take my kids to pre-releases for two-headed giant when the opportunity presents itself, so I'm still at it.

I'm concerned that there is a Pro Tour player writing about "casual" playing. How much time does he spend thinking about non-sanctioned formats? Is he excited about putting Bestial Fury on Hearthfire Hobgoblin?

Smart move mentioning his girlfriend however. I'm sure that bought him at least one session of hanging out with the boys and playing cards. He set the bar pretty high though, he'll need to propose to her next week for the same effect.

If this is the direction this column is going to take, I will have a few more minutes on Tuesday mornings to do something else. I found this to have absolutley no value. I cannot believe that they gave up The Ferret's multi player content for this pile of garbage.

Quick point: Though you may have accidentally made the assumption that all magic players are male, perhaps more pressing is the fact that you made the assumption that all magic players - male and female - are straight.

Jake,

Is this the article you called me about last week? I'm so glad you wrote it , but disappointed I didn't get in on it. It's exactly what I've been feeling for the longest time, as I'm sure we have talked about. Great job, buddy.

Hit me up if you have any more brilliant ideas (which, knowing you, will happen in about three minutes
