...Wow; that's freaky. That Snake deck is eerily close to my own Snake tribal deck, though mine has a slightly broader card base; I guess the basic skeleton for that kind of deck is pretty straightforward. Mine's more aggressive to suit it for playing one-on-one as well as in multiplayer, and I use Ohran Viper instead of the Ophidians, and Squall Line and Tribal Unity as alternate kills.

Might I suggest Tangle Asp and/or Sakura-Tribe Scout for replacing the Snipers? The Scout accellerates the deck incredibly well, especially with the bouncelands, and I've found that Tangle Asp is an excellent deterrent at any stage of the game.

Oh, and Chord of Calling. I cannot recommend that card enough; an end-of-turn tutor for Sosuke into an alpha strike or a surprise tutor for a Mystic Snake to stop a sweeper have won me more games than I can conveniently count.



As for other more obscure tribal decks, I have a hyperaggressive monoblack Rat deck (Swarmyard is awesome incarnate) and a Modular deck; the Modular creatures may not technically be a "tribe", but they act like it. (Yes, it contains Ravager; no, it is not Affinity.)

I had a Zombie deck based mainly on Mirrodin's Nim before I figured out that the Nim suck and it would be much, much better if I dropped the Tribal requirement.

I've kinda had the same issuses with changlings, except I've refused to use them as fillers for a creature type that was too small.
I know it's a class and not a type, but I've had great luck with an archer themed deck(viridian longbow + thornweald archer + greatbow doyen= tap destroy target creature and deal one damage to it's controller), that's powered by ishron sceptre and evolution charm. I'm working on a scarecrow deck that uses mishra and reaper king.

I have been playing a very successful Changeling deck with the following basic build.

white
4 crib swap
4 avian changeling
2 pull from eternity
4 rebuff the wicked

black
2 diabolic tutor
2 haakon, stromgald scourge
4 nameless inversion
4 skeletal changeling

red
2 lightning axe[/c]

artifact
3 door of destinies
4 howling mine
3 locket of yesterdays

lands
8 swamps
8 plains
2 vivid meadow
2 vivid marsh

Believe it or not this deck is much more effective than it looks. lots of testing lead me to remove many of the discard a cards and rely on the seemingly random Lightning axe and Howling Mine to get Haakon into the graveyard. other cards like door of destinies and liliana vess play a vital role as powerful cards if they stay out but also work wonderfully as lightning rods for the opponents removal spells leaving less obvious synergy cards in play.

the deck simply abuses cheep changeling and uses haakon to recycle them endlessly.
It takes a few turns to spin up but has enough removal and chump blockers in the early game to save itself. then you drop haakon into the grave yard via lightning axe or letting your hand over flow to 8 cards and discarding at the end of the turn.

rebuff the wicked runs general protection over important cards (its nice when you generally only have to worry about remove from game spells as everything important in the graveyard comes back)
Pull from eternity saves haakon or the occasional changeling from removed from game happy cards like crib swap, oblivion ring or expatriate.

the deck if very effective against anything but the fastest weenie or burn decks and does well against control and anything with bigger slower creatures.

I don't have the numbers with me, but I helped a friend build a changeling deck that uses Spirit Mirror with Ameoboid Changeling, Shields of Velis Vale, and Imagecrafter for a cheap wrath that doesn't touch your own critters. Then you play Peer Pressure (naming their creature type, given that your creatures are also that type), and you've got their best creature(s). It's a fun rogue deck. Certainly not tournament worthy, but seriously fun.

Effective enough, in fact, that I seldom bring it out because if the other players see me pulling it out, they start looking for their incredibly nasty overpowered decks to match it...

Anyway, it's one of those "How will I win this game?" kind of decks. Sometimes I get a bunch of warchiefs in my opening hand, so I just beat face with really big, cheap creatures (undead, daru, and edgewalker mean 5/5 fliers for free). Or I can get my haakon combo out, and make sure nobody ever keeps a creature in play. And once, I was playing against an 'infinite creature token generation' deck, and I had Shields of Velis Vel and the Gempalm Polluter in hand. Since this is casual, I think that having the slim possibility of a play like that is worth tossing those two cards in.

This is actually my first deck that I built from the ground up. It seems to work just fine, so I have been a tad reluctant to modify it.

One of my first tribal decks was a WB budget Cleric deck. A lot of clerics have various kinds of protection which is good evasion, and there are plenty of good cleric utility cards like Cabal Archon. Also, since they are all tiny, I added some equipment so they can deal more than 1 or 2 damage a turn. My favorites are Beloved Chaplain and Soltari Visionary. And Soul Warden.

The strangest tribe I ever tried to build around was the Homunculi. Except they are actually Illusions so it's an illusion deck. It works pretty well because many illusions (like Hazy Homunculus) have some kind of evasion, even if it's conditional. The Illusions are also a tribe of punies, so equipment is very helpful. Also, it's often victorious because a Sneaky Homunculus is very hard to kill. He's much too cute.

I also have a Snake deck, and a Kavu deck, and a Giantling deck, and an Archerling deck, and a Chimeraling deck, and a Treefolk deck, and a Ninja deck, and a Sliver deck.

Ooh, I've been putting together a deck in this vein ever since I got a playset of Spirit Mirrors. I didn't think of Peer Pressure, though. Really, the only issue I've run into was that of you don't get any Reflections from your Changelings... Crib Swap works incredibly well in a situation when you can immediately destroy the baby that it produces.

Very nice article. My favorite tribe would be Kobolds, making a bunch of 0/1's into 5/5's with cards like Gauntlet of Might and Door of Destiniesis a lot of fun. I really wish WotC would print more kobolds stuff, i was really happy to see Ker Keep great printed recently.

Anyways, heres my changeling deck. Every creature is a changeling besides lackey (which is just brutal when you drop a Colossus with it). Didgeridoo is equally as good, basicly giving all your guys flash for 3 colorless. So heres the list, give me some tips on what you might change/add to make it better.

I have a Thallid deck that takes great use of the ravnica card doubling season and all the new thallids that came out in the time spiral block. Amassing a large army of tokens and using Deathspore Thallid to crush opponent creatures. Can also make an army of massive creatures with Thelon of Havenwood. This deck is possibly my nastiest multiplayer deck as it controls threats so easily, its only problem is mass removal and since my comunity doesnt pack wraths im pretty safe, except for pestilence, but the i just hope i have a Thelon of Havenwood and a Thallid Germinator to keep my Thelon alive.
