Closer to a Magic movie?

For those who haven't seen yet, there are trailers out for the new G.I. Joe movie. For those of you who don't know, the movie rights to G.I. Joe, Barbie, some game i can't recall, and Magic the Gathering, have been sold.

So does the fact that we'll be getting a G.I. Joe movie pretty soon indicate we could see a Magic movie in the near future?

What do you all think?
… and then, the squirrels came.

Probably no status change from when Hasbro sold the rights to whatever group of fifteen games included Magic a few years back.

The G.I. Joe movie rights have been out and sold for much, much longer, and it was only the success of Transformers that got the G.I. Joe flick moving. I don't think it really applies to Magic, though, for a few reasons:

-Magic is a very, very different property than Transformers or G.I. Joe.

-MtG was never a childhood-defining fad in the same way that those cartoons were.

-For a variety of reasons (and that's a whole other rant, lemme tell ya), MtG has a demonstrable history of not being hugely successful outside of its niche (to the outsider looking to finance a movie, especially).

I really don't think it's all that likely. But then, I've been wrong before.

QFT.

However, I think if done right, the Magic setting could be made into a rather popular movie. All of a sudden, Ravnica seems like a good setting. I don't know why.

I really hope not. I think a very good movie could be made out of a Magic storyline, but if it were mass-released it will be awful. I hope Hasbro has learned their lesson from the D&D movie. A direct-to-DVD CGI film a la Advent Children. That could possibly work. I'm not sure how profitable it would be, however.

I'll always repeat myself. There's no need to make movies, a young-adult/adult MtG cartoon series (normal drawings, flash, CGI, or whatever) covering a block's storyline is more likely to succeed and pull-in new people than a half-hearted special effects forced movie.

Whenever I think about a Magic movie, I just look to my DVD shelf with my DVDs of the original animated Lord of the Rings movies (Hobbit, LOTR, ROTK) and Peter Jackson's trilogy (both theatrical and extended cuts) and I think "that'll do".

Hasbro had nothing whatsoever to do with the D&D movie, nor did Wizards of the Coast. Those movie rights were sold to Courtney Solomon before Wizards acquired TSR and before Hasbro acquired Wizards.

Nonetheless, there's still a lesson to be learned. Esp. since people still associate it with the current regime. I could make a relevant political statement, but I shan't.
