If my opponent tries to put in a creature with Braids, Conjurer Adept  when her ability triggers during their upkeep can I respond with Nix  and counter that since they didnt spend any mana on the creature?

Playing a spell is not the same things as "Put into play" effects. So, no, you cannot counter something that is put into play with Braids because that is not a spell.
