Changes For: Return to Ravnica
Previous Set: Magic 2013

  • New Keywords
Return to Ravnica introduced five new keywords: Detain, Populate, Overload, Scavenge, and Unleash.

When you Detain a permanent, until the beginning of your next turn its activated abilities can't be used, and if it's a creature it can't attack or block.

To Populate, you put a token onto the battlefield that's a copy of one of the tokens you already controlled.

Overload allows you to supercharge your spells so that instead of affecting just a single target, they affect everything you could target instead.

Scavenge allows you to exile the creature card it's on from your graveyard to put +1/+1 counters on a creature you control.

Unleash gives you the option of having your creature enter the battlefield with a free +1/+1 counter on it, but watch out--if an unleash creature has a +1/+1 counter on it, it can't block! Aw, who blocks anyway, right?

For more information on these keywords, see their respective entries in the Keyword FAQ.

  • Types
The lists of legal card, land, and planeswalker types have been changed. For a full list of currently existing types, see this post.

  • "Becomes"
The rules used to say that something that enters the battlefield in a certain condition doesn't "become" that condition--this was so that cards like Mesmeric Orb wouldn't trigger if your stuff entered the battlefield untapped, for example. But that had a weird interaction with Bramble Elemental that caused it to not work. For a while this was fixed with errata to the Elemental, but now it's been fixed by narrowing the rule that did this so it only applies to being tapped or untapped. Now Bramble Elemental's text can look all pretty again.

  • Illegal targets
The rules don't want a spell or ability to be able to affect an illegal target in any way, but there was a loophole that implied the spell/ability could cause something else to affect the illegal target. That's no longer the case.

  • Really, really small things
You will likely never need to know this. But in case you want to know:
    • Counters "placed on" a permanent include counters it enters the battlefield with as a result of any effect.
    • Ability words aren't limited to appearing on cards.
    • Cards drawn face-down are considered to have no characteristics.
    • If asked to search for cards matching an undefined quality, you still search, but just can't find anything.
    • An ability that triggers when something "transforms into" something only triggers if it wasn't that thing before the transformation.
    • In a multiplayer game there was a loophole that could potentially cause a card to "cease to exist" when a player left the game; the loophole has been closed. It'll be exiled instead.

And so people say to me, "How do I know if a word is real?" You know, anyone who's read a children's book knows that love makes things real. If you love a word, use it! That makes it real. Being in the dictionary is an artificial distinction; it doesn't make the word any more real than any other word. If you love a word, it becomes real.
