Session 1: An Intro.
Recently I ran a full session of the playtest packet(A combined ruleset using both January and March released information - Liked some changes such as the Skill Die change from january to march, and hated others, like the lackluster monk in march vs. the Monkly Monk of January) and altered some of my own changes(Combat Expertise changes - DM fiat) The beginning was like most others, the PC's(Walter - Cleric of the Arcanist; Winnifred"Winnie" - The Trustworthy Rogue; and Tassleholf "Tass" - The Juggling Monk) were enjoying a meal at the Bogs Brewery Tavern & Sleepaway; A commotion outside the tavern entry drew their attention, A merchant had collapsed before a few guards just exiting the tavern, and he was taken to the local guardhouse for his story; His claim was that...

After tweaking some characters to fit into the changed rules, we began where we left off. The party discovered most of the secret doors in the dungeon thanks to successful spot checks, and found the undead drow "king", from whom they managed to get the crown from by paying him with 90 gp in compensation (the price was originally 300 gp, to which they managed to make him agree to by making hard persuasion checks, and managed to make him agree to a lower price by a nigh-impossible deception check). I gave them XP for good role-playing, and they leveled up. The party, after returning to town, decided to tackle the Ogremoch's Bane quest. They have yet to encounter meaningful threats in terms of combat. The skill die mechanic, while nice, sometimes seems a little too swingy, and I think there...

So the room is clean and the encounters are prepared.
The dice sit ready, sorted with care. I've picked out the minis, piled on papers, Each dictating numbers with which I'll kill players. Muwahahahaha. I said earlier that I make everything up as I go along. This is partially true in that I make up the dungeons, many of the encounters, and the treasure bits as we go. I find this affords me the ability to make the game progressively more fun as I meet the interests of my players. Being a game, I know why people attend and I'm not shy about rewards as I understand their worth. I don't follow the charts exactly, nor do I roll for my players rewards. At times they receive lots of monetary rewards for their efforts, and sometimes they're forced to watch as a chest full of jewels tumbles into a ...

Alright then!
This is the first entry we will make into this blog and see where we go. After yesterdays match where I had a whole slew of individuals come through the game during its course, I've opted to publicize the sessions and take them to a new level. If people are truly into playing, I feel assured I'll meet them here. I have a solid core of players who are always ready to kill a few critters, gain a few levels, make a few gold. I started a table fee, and everyone was excited about it for the first session. Not so many people tossed in on it last time though. Being a DM, maintaining a hobby and running the games are a lot of hard work that is thankfully made easier by the system and the original character generator, which I thankfully still have a copy of. I wish they would allow an offline...

Dungeons and Dragons Chronicles #1: The Red Box! So I bought the Red Box! That’s right, the iconic red Dungeons and Dragons box is now owned by yours truly. So of course, just like every other game I play; I will be chronicling my adventures throughout here on my blog. Let’s get started! I didn’t just buy the red box, I also bought the Rules Compendium, because; well I kind of needed to didn’t I? I’ll need it soon enough so why not just get it now? I also bought a cool set of Steam Punk dice, D4-D20, they look awesome. So I’m set with 2 sets of dice, the rules, and everything I need to make a character and play through some starter adventures. I began by reading over the rulebook and everything else ...

I recently started playing Dungeons and Dragons Encounters at my local game store.
My first week was interesting enough, I got to the table about 10 minutes early to find the DM's putting together their papers. I ask, to make sure that I have everything I need. I was met with a less than enthusiastic "Yeah." Clearly they were invested in their previous conversations and I was made to feel that I was interupting. So the time comes, A small group assembles. We are prompted to give a brief character intro, so I say hello I give my characters name and class and after everyone has had a turn to speak we set off on our adventure. Being new, I am not use to finding certain stats or numbers on a whim. So when my turn comes I am often caught off guard. So I fumble my papers and eventually pick a power...

Dungeons & Dragons is a game beloved by its fans. A game that brings family and friends together, creates communities, societies and sub-cultures. D&D teaches. We have heard countless stories of gamers who have delved deeper, studying history, language, science and math purely for the desire to be better players. Gamers have created lifelong friendships because of this game and come in all walks of life; firefighters, educators, computer programmers, entrepreneurs, and yes, even a few documentary film-makers. We need to interview people all over the country, find folks who were there at its creation, talk to experts to explain to us why this is such an important game. We also have archival footage to find and pay for. Once we get it "into the can", we then have to cut all of that footage ...

What follows is how I prepared the May 24th D&D Next playtest materials for play as DM: how I "unboxed" the adventure.
First, the Bestiary. I appreciate that paragraphs (namely, the Legend and Lore ones) are given to aspects of evil humanoid cultures other than how inhumane or what flavor of jerk they are. The goblins' somewhat tragic underdog niche, the hobgoblins' discipline and devotion, and orcs' superstition were fun to read and role-play. These humanoids were undeniably unsympathetic and brutish, but they also had a story as people, they weren't XP-bag bogeys that only lived to die on the end of a sword. This aspect of them was necessary to make Caves of Chaos as flexible as it was; the group I DMed actually allied with the goblins and then hobgoblins and coordinated raids with them ... |
