Early versions of Dungeons & Dragons always included miniature rules for movement, range, area effects, and even for actions similar to attacks of opportunity. But I never witnessed those rules in action. They seemed to require miniatures. Collecting miniatures cost a lot of money and invited another hobby consisting of painting miniatures.

D&D second edition arrived in 1989 with the usual easily abstracted and easily ignored rules for miniatures. However, six years later, Player’s Option: Combat & Tactics finally introduced the gridded battle map to D&D. In the Foreword, Skip Williams promises that, “You will find plenty of ways to make combat more than a dice-rolling contest or an exercise in subtracting hit points from your character’s total.” Combat & Tactics

Flashback to the Day of Mourning.

v       Campaign Date: 994 YK 20 Olarune

The first flashback begins as the group's good friend, Ashara Kathrik, recounts the tale of when the PC’s first met.  The PC's and another man named Baxter Haggerty, recently introduced to them by Ashara; sit comfortably in a warm tavern, listening to Ashara recount the story of how the heroes met.  Over the years, the PC’s have befriended Ashara and she has always loved hearing the stories of their adventures.  This particular story, she knows very well.  The story begins something like this:

Within this post, and the others to follow, will be reports of my efforts to entertain my players and my attempts to survive my DM's own works. These reports will come from several settings, some of them homebrew and some of them Eberronian in nature.

Readers of the Expedtionary Dispatches feature from Dragon Magazine might recall the Dispatch from Janus Gull, which appeared in Dragon #367. Having not run a session in some time, and yet having made time for a Halloween edition, I found Janus Gull to be the perfect idea for my purposes.

Set in Eberron's Eldeen Reaches, Janus Gull is a small fishing village

I have played several versions of each game, amung a couple other pen and paper RPGs, and I must confess, that I like the direction gaming has taken over the past 5 years.  It has become more accepted, accessible, and fun.  I could not have been more pleased that roleplaying rules were taken out of the D&D rules because now our group can do whatever feels right instead of feeling glued to rules.

There is a lot of whining out there about this change or that change in D&D 4, and on every issue I stand by Wizards of the Coast; not because I'm a fan of them or like giving them money, but because I've played a lot of other games and found them all... not as easy and fun to play.  Shadowrun and Battletech are covert ops missions that all end in failure or unspeakable cold blooded player
