As you may already know, the end has come for the Star Wars license at Wizards of the Coast. It's with a heavy heart that I write this blog, but I feel like it's a good way for me to let you know how much the Star Wars brand has meant to me and how it's really shaped my life.

Back in 1998, I had just graduated from high school and started up a website. That website was originally just an online repository for me to use to transport my homebrew Star Wars RPG (back in the D6 system from West End Games) to wherever I was running my games. In this case, I was moving to Knoxville, TN to start my freshman year at the University of Tennessee, and I wasn't sure where my gaming would take me. Evenetually, that site would morph into a site known as the Star Wars RPG Database, and then it would further

If you hang out on our forums, you've doubtless heard the announcement concerning our Star Wars miniatures and RPG lines. Not the best news for diehard fans of our Star Wars games. I have a few thoughts I'd like to share that will probably have no impact on the angry few who wax hyperbolic on our forums, but they're good thoughts regardless.

First, who am I, you ask? I'm the lead designer for the Saga Edition RPG and the creative manager for our RPG and miniatures lines. I also edited a little-known magazine called Star Wars Gamer, which some of you über-nerds might remember from a few years back. I've been associated with Star Wars professionally for more than one-quarter of my life. The only one who has me beat at Wizards is my boss, Bill Slavicsek, who's been pushing Star Wars on you

The original Star Wars movies (episodes IV, V, and VI) were good, and have a place in our sci-fi consciousness.  The prequels (I, II, and III) were horrific and should be banned from being played or sold.  However from this obvious evil comes "The Clone Wars" animated series.  The show is fantastic and is what the prequels should have been.  The reason I mention the show is that it has made me like the Star Wars universe again.

Liking the Star Wars universe again (specifically during the clone wars because of the show) makes me think that playing the Star Wars RPG might actually be pretty cool.  Of course, there are less Star Wars players than there are D&D players so that right there is prohibitive.  Also, as I've mentioned before there is an issue of accessibility and content.

Lots are gamers aren't lucky enough to find tabletop games, even with amazing internet resources like meetup.com or penandpapergames.com at their fingertips.  Or, perhaps the gamer in question doesn't have the time for a tabletop game.  In these desperate circumstances, many gamers turn to play-by-post games.

If your interested in a play-by-post Star Wars Saga Edition RPG, you have lots of such games going on.  Such as at:

Sedona

Art work by C. Gerber

Part 1 – Earth Date November of ’49

Welcome to Sedona, a relatively unknown Class II Planet and home of the Rouge-Sky Space Pirates.  The Captain of the RSSP, a Crusite named Sanmear, is currently tracking a group of three survivors who have been marooned on Sedona’s rocky surface.  The leader of these survivors, an Earthling, is the All-American superstar Johnny “Cool Cage” Cagetti, and his companions include a Pikardian, Doctor Tiberius, and a Ming known only as Trinity.  Sedona, a rocky planet located in a gravity-well between two yellow stars, is reputably hard to find or leave without the Otacon Compass.  This is part of the reason why the RSSP is in pursuit, the other reason would be the stolen Otacon Sanmear wishes to recover from Cool Cage.

I came across this article on the RPGNet Wiki entitled "How to Run:Star Wars Saga Edition."  Since this is a topic that comes up frequently on these forums, I've cut and pasted the contents here:

Having touched on the benefits and problems with healing surges yesterday, today I’m going to write about options and additions to the system to add injury and wounds to the game. In essence, this is adding a mechanic to represent physical damage that cannot be slept-off or shouted-away by a warlord, which requires time or magic or resources to remove.

Why Injuries?

The big question is why: what benefit is there in a system that only affects players – as few monsters survive after their initial encounter to develop wounds – and would add an extended penalty to a character?

The answer is mostly realism. This is a bit of an ugly word/ concept for some, as they want their game to be, well, gamey. (Probably a poor word-choice but few others spring to mind. Game-ish? Game-atic?) Adding
