Gaining Control In ZZW Draft

How has the draft format evolved with the addition of Worldwake? Are there viable control strategies in ZZW and if so, how do you draft them? Level 3 pro Adam Koska has the answers! He explains how to draft his favorite control archetype in ZZW.

------ ZEN ------

Pack 1 pick 1:

    Caravan Hurda

    Desecrated Earth

    Forest

    Turntimber Grove

    Kor Aeronaut

    Tuktuk Grunts

    Ior Ruin Expedition

    Narrow Escape

    Oran-Rief Survivalist

    Crypt Ripper

--> Trusty Machete

    Lavaball Trap

    Goblin Shortcutter

    Caller of Gales

    Feast of Blood

Fortunately, we start out with a pretty easy pick here. Trusty Machete is one the bets uncommon in the format, and there isn’t anything that is even close to it in the pack. Kor Aeronaut is definitely the next best card, so we are probably sending a white signal here. I doubt anything tables from this pack, so we won’t really worry about that. But Trusty Machete allows us to stay flexible, so off we go.

Pack 1 pick 2:

------ ZEN ------

Pack 1 pick 1:

    Makindi Shieldmate

    Goblin Bushwhacker

    Forest

    Goblin Shortcutter

    Soaring Seacliff

    Expedition Map

    Kazandu Refuge

    Ondu Cleric

--> Vampire Nighthawk

    Needlebite Trap

    Torch Slinger

    Spreading Seas

    Crypt Ripper

    Arid Mesa

    Lethargy Trap

Vampire Nighthawk is easily the pick here, but I have to remind myself to be open to switching out of black, simply because so many people are drafting black right now. It is just hard to get a decent black deck together. But, Vampire Nighthawk is a bomb, and it is definitely one of the best cards in the set. The other cards worth looking at are Goblin Short Cutter, Torch Slinger, Arid Mesa, and Crypt Ripper. In a pack as bad as this

Today we tried the 4-pack group game draft mentioned recently on the magic website.  We did Shards-Shards-Conflux-Reborn packs and sat in two groups.  Each table had 5 people and it was somewhat interesting.  The deckbuilding was a little less crazy than in a normal draft.  I definitely had to take cards OUT before putting unwanted cards IN.  I jumped on the bant-wagon early with Stoic Angel, then picked up another couple of big rares in the bant colors.  I kept looking for exalted cards to synergize with the angel, but rarely saw any worth taking.  I ended up playing with some big creatures, some disruption and a couple of soul's might:

Creatures:

Sovereigns of Lost Alara
Stoic Angel
Cliffrunner Behemoth
Skill Borrower
Grizzled Leotau
Aerie Mystics x2
Stweard of Valeron
Rhox War Monk
Winged

This was my 2nd zendikar draft, and I liked my deck.  I mentioned that I really pushed to go black for the removal, and tried to just splash other colors.  I ended up with mainly black-blue, with a splash of white.

Last week I participated in my second Zendikar draft, and really wanted to focus on landing as much removal as possible.  I secured myself in black early on, with some blue in windrider eel and some white, including a journey to nowhere.  In my second pack I opened Emeria Angel and Vampire Nighthawk.  I stressed about this pick, because I had not yet picked anything with double white cost and wanted to only splash white if possible.  I ended up going with the vampire, and I don't regret it.  I ended up with a pretty good pool, including two copies of Quest for the Gravelord.

In my first match, I completed both quests in both games and it totally won me the game both times.  In the second round, I lost 0-2 to a really fast black-blue deck, unable to use my hideous end on his black
