In early editions of D&D, the length of a year, month, week and IIRC in some cases a day were not terrestrial standard for several game worlds.

I don't entirely like the idea of a long rest as a complete reset and refresh event. I don't necessarily want real-world realism-we are talking about heroes in a magical world- but I do enjoy the tension of a dungeon crawl gone on too long. Provisions waning, the exit a day or more of solid travel behind you and dwindling hit points; you heal up some with each long rest and the cleric helps, but the unrelenting hazards are grinding away at you.

I'm a big believer in "Getting to Yes." Present the options, all the options, to the players, and see what they latch onto. Then build a game around what they are playing. If they want to play a Tiefling, don't screw them over for wanting to play the Tiefling. Build a story that will accommodate that choice. If the player WANTS to have risks involved with the racial choice (because those risks could be a roleplaying MINE, like having to wear robes to disguise a devilish appearance), that's...

My campaign is quasi-historical, so I'm constantly saying no to races I haven't already distorted history to accommodate. I don't care one way or another about the frequency designations, because it should vary greatly from setting to setting.

I like the idea of limited self healing as it helps the flow of the game. If after every fight the party has to rest for 8 hrs nothing would ever get done or every subsequent fight gets more and more deadly, especially if the adventure has time constraints. It should not be during combat, that is the clerics job or get potions. The Playtest idea is great but may need further scaling if it works out too powerful.

I feel very strongly that the level of healing generally being discussed trashes the 4th wall. Magic allows for a lot of leeway in modelling, but without magic, healing should take place at a rate akin to reality- or at least no better than a typical action film. I hope you create an optional modular rule doing this, because for those gamers that left at the introduction of 4th ed, I think this is probably the largest issue. Imagine in real life (doesn't matter if you are the toughest person...

The only thing I need from books is numbers and a small descriptions/flavor. I find large and extensive fluff blocks to be rather useless, as they often don't fit into whatever particular setting or situation I happen to be running.
I care about numbers because I want the numbers to be balanced. I never want to worry about mechanical balance - everything else I can make up, but please don't make me do math.

I agree with other posters that the 2e page design is an ideal balance.
I also want to make a statement heretical to game design: In past editions, annoying gaps in design have led to great play. 2nd ed often left the GM without a clear answer, leading to improvisation and better role-playing. Being outsmarted by players is fine, and as long as they haven't broken the game outright, exploiting the setting (not just an ill-worded rule) is a good thing. In real life, there are lots of...

My Profile

    About Me

About Me: I'm a died-in-the-wool geek. No one person can be properly into all of geekdom, but I make a fair effort. I've got 2 particularly solid bits of geek cred:

I suggested that we get green jade d20s in our wedding rings, but only after my wife suggested we get married at Gencon.

For about 3 years, I've been running a youth D&D program. It's now separate, but it was started by Cornell University, so I can actually claim to have been a "Game-Master laureate of an Ivy league University!" Also, I let the players (aged 9 to 13) pick the edition, and we've been playing 2e ever since!
Movies: Hole with no bottom! Too many to list individually! SF&F dominates, but only very slightly.
TV Shows: These days: Doctor Who, Supernatural, Once Upon a Time, assorted British panel shows, Daily Show, Colbert Report, etc. etc. etc.
Books, Comics and Graphic Novels: I'm a bibliomaniac... so I'll just say mainly SF&F, with assorted non fiction and a bit of everything else.

In comics, mainly Marvel and a bit of Vertigo...with plenty of everything else. As my better half reminds me, I am also a loyal reader of Knights of the Dinner Table.
Music: Muppets, Nerdcore, JoCo, Of Monsters and Men, Flobots, and whatever is on.
Hobbies: Gaming,Reading, Movies, Gaming, Writing (for gaming), with occasional gaming when I find time.
Likes: The heft of a good sword(odd in a pacifist), the shape of a good story, and the engaging fun of a good game (board, card, or RP).
Dislikes: When players, GMs, even designers forget that RPGs are about honestly and accurately modelling- decisions, behaviors, situations, and reality.
      My Games:
      Dungeons & Dragons
      Guillotine
      Star Wars Roleplaying Games
      The Great Dalmuti
Other Games I Play: Probably a hundred games or more, so I'll stick to ones I frequently play these days: Pandemic, Arkham Horror, Munchkin (et al), and Amber diceless RPG. I also fondly recall White Wolf, Hackmaster ("4th ed."), Everlasting, and Torg.
