I thought some people here might be interested in this.  Metamorphosis Alpha was the precursor to GW, published in 1976.  The general premise of the game was that Earth had sent a gigantic colony spaceship to a nearby star.  Along the way, the ship passed through a radiation cloud, causing the central computer to malfunction and producing mutations in the people, flora and fauna aboard.  The players were humans and/or mutants living on the ship several generations after the breakdown of civilization exploring their 'world.'

Saw this announcement today:

Signal Fire Studios LLC is proud to announce that 2010 will see the  publication of the newest incarnation of the very first science fiction  role playing game, Metamorphosis Alpha! Using the Dungeons  & Dragons 4th Edition game rules, players take on the role of  mutated humans, plants, and animals and experience sci-fi  action-adventure.

I think the release date for it may have been moved back to Q1 2011.

It was announced in 2009. No one has heard anything recently from them. I was looking forward to it but I'm not sure it is going to come at this point.

The new rules are 4th Edition of Metamorphosis Alpha,  not D&D 4E.

That isn't what we are talking about. Signal Fire Studios licensed Metamorphosis Alpha to produce a version compatible with 4E D&D. Like 7E Gamma World uses a modified the 4E D&D so will 5E Metamorphosis Alpha. (Technically I don't think it is 5E. More like an alternate version because WardCo will continue with the 4E version and possibly make new versions.)
