I've been debating for a while if I was going to buy the new edition of Gamma World. Finally decided to buy it last night but the store didn't have any in stock so I got a few more days to change my mind again. (Why send all of your new product to the NY Comic Con but that isn't really the point of this blog.)TelinArtho had an interesting point when we were discussing the new edition. He said I should treat it like 4E D&D. When 4E came out we had some mixed thoughts on the new game. 3.0/3.5 felt like the early editions with the mechanics cleaned up. 4E felt like a different game. While...

I continue to think of running a Gamma World game.  I've been reading up on the 6E recently.  There are some interesting ideas in it.  I like the Synthetic's racial trait of narrow focus (class skills are determined by the first class the synthetic takes and doesn't change even if the synthetic multiclasses).  Others features of the Synthetic are problematic however.  Large is generally considered a +1 LA in 3.5.  Large increases the die type for HD.  That is somewhat countered by the lack of Con score but that causes problems if you want to use a point buy for ability scores.  They...

After the Bomb (and TMNT from which it was based) has a very interesting character creation system.  The character gets a base animal and a number of BIO-E.  It then choses what to buy.  You can get bipedal stance to stand upright.  Full hands give you fingers and thumbs for manipulating objects.  Animal specific powers like claws, turtle shell, etc. can be purchased.  Psionic powers can also be purchased but they are more subdued than the mutations you can get in Gamma World. Unfortunately After the Bomb doesn't try to balance the system much.  Every animal is given enough BIO-E to be...

The new Gamma World will have cards to randomly distribute some mutations plus some static mutations that are rolled at creation.  Ability scores will also be randomly determined. A lot of people have said this is good as Gamma World has always been like that.  I've disagreed because that is not how my group created Gamma World characters.  We did roll for mutations to some degree.  If we got something that didn't appeals to us we had no problem with picking something else.  Granted we never did get around to playing a Gamma World game. Interestingly if you go back to the first version...
