About This Group

Essentials Started it rolling and we cant be sure about the D&Next thing coming up. Between comments about combat oriented classes and out of combat ones and a sense that perhaps new devs are out of touch with 4e, will 5e be
    "the past all over again?"
Some grognards are the passionate ones that make even the rest of us sigh. But others may be voices of reason who understand the value of true balance and who take up the fight exerting there voices of concern. The reasons for the original design decisions of 4e didnt suddenly go away...
It's not about hate, its about love, we love 4th edition.
"Can there be a place for those who
love 4th edition in 5th edition?"

@OCAMPOWell said. I would never have been a DM if not for 4E. I wanted non-linear stories, where Players' decisions could really affect the flow of things, but I wouldn't be able to scale things properly without a system that allowed it. That and the... more

Due to a spot of controversy around the old poll, I have updated and revised it. The shiny, new poll on class preferences for 5E can be found here community.wizards.com/crescentlake/blog/... please take a moment to vote in it, if you like.

I've created a poll on my blog and linked to it in the Next forums to see what classes people would be interested in seeing in Next. Head over and cast your vote. :) community.wizards.com/crescentlake/blog/...

I like 4E in all its flavours, hence the "pure" vs "Essentials" fight seems pointless to me. I've been playing D&D since 1999, and while I like 3E, it scared a lot of people away with its fearsome set of rules and many things to keep in mind. 4E is heavy on tactical grid and battle focus, but a good DM can always correct that if your people are up to role-playing. On top of that, I think Wizards spat on the face of all those buyers who invested their hard-earned cash in 4E only to have the developers throw it away in despise a short time later. Wizards is not seeing a single dollar from me for Next for a long time.

Thanks for the invite. I have run a number of Next Playtests and one thing that I have found is that they sure make players approciate their old game :). Especially, 4th Ed, but also Pathfinder, Savage Worlds, Dungeon Crawl Classics and other systems. Where are the Healing Surges? Where are the powers? Where are the feats? Where is my Wand of Cure Light Wounds? (oops, a Pathfinderism got in there :)). One element that fills me with some hope for Next is the System Module concept. But, we will see - I intend to try to be a constructive element in Next, but I have yet to find a player that feels that they are likely to buy it. Thanks again. Good Gaming All.

Thanks for the invite, but like many others I enjoyed Essentials... in fact, it is my opinion that 4e started out rather shaky and grew significantly better (though bloated) over time. However, I am glad to see this group exists because I think it's important that everyone have a say in what things they think should be in the new edition of D&D. Like for any of those voices though, I hope that you are focused more on what you want to see than what you don't want to see. -Lanethan
