3. A locket with a convienient plot twist, i mean name or picture
4. A golden plate that has the magical ability to produce food at the users will, however the user can not choose what food, and the food always has too much MSG in it.
5. An identical, slightly larger chest.
6. A cryptic riddle promising great treasure to the hero(es) who penetrate the Caverns of Ereth. If the PCs make it through the dangerous tunnels and subterranian dwellers, they find an old and sophisticated city-state inhabited by a dying people who need the seed of heroes to re-invigorate their lineage. The notes have been scattered across the land by the last king of the city. The heroes will be rewarded with eldritch treasure and fantastic jewels. And the female PCs will be annoyed.
A shattered elvish crown and the seed from an oak tree. Now if the players don't start thinking "quest" on their own you need to ban alcaholic beverages from your games.
8. NOTHING (except the faint sound of laughter...)
9. A note reading that other adventurers took the treasure already.
10. A terrified kobold with his eyes tightly shut and hands over his tiny ears repeatedly whispering to himself, "if I can't see them, they can't see me, if I can't see them..."
11. Another group of adventurers just as confused and disappointed as you at not finding any treasure.
12. A ferret, seemingly normal.... Except a fiery red furcoat, and burgundy eyes. Where that came from? It dooks curiously.
13. A handful of dice with each side labeled "1"
14; a tome on the cultivation of turnips, voluminous brick of 400 pages!
15. A list titled 'Things Found in a Treasure Chest', with about 15 things written so far.
16. Fangs, teeth, and a tongue. It's a Mimic. D'oh!
Trolls in sheep's clothing have no redeeming qualities that are beneficial towards the health of the community. My Artwork/Photography/Literature
17. Billowing dark smoke came forth... An hulking, gianting humanoid monster look down at you with amusement/anger... Crud.
19. 100 gold pieces
Why, it's a brown mold of course. Rogue, roll a fortitude save!
21. A note that, when read, causes the reader to disentegrate.
The wizard identifies every item to be magic have a fire property of some sort. Trolls appear in front of the PCs.
PCs activate the items.
The items explode in the PCs faces leaving the trolls with rare adventurer steaks.

24. A strange and mystifying message appears in the air above the chest. Then keeps repeating... and repeating...
25. Schroedinger's cat grumbling about how you messed up one of the most elementary of thought experiments in the field of quantum physics.
26. A strange, alien music starts as soon as the box is opened, with ghostly lights....

(fact, it's modern days music, choose the style)
25: A +4 magically enchanted . . . butter knife. (Our DM did this to us once, 1d2+4 damage!
26). A Mac Guffin

27). IT'S A TRAP!!!

Orc in the House of Trolls
28.) Their own head preserved in a jar.
25. Schroedinger's cat grumbling about how you messed up one of the most elementary of thought experiments in the field of quantum physics.

This works better if the previous chest they opened contained a dead cat.
29. When opened it released an ear piercing Brown Noise

30. Its a black void, when the player reaches his hand in, it opens a portal in another PC's back pack and pulls out an item they adventurers all ready have.

31. There is a light bulb attached to the lid, that turns on when the chest opens up. one of your PC's tries to see if the light is still on when the lid closes. opening and closing the lid as fast as he can trying to see if it turns off.

32. Picture of the openers mother, in a bikini.

33. the first 3 seasons of Walker Texas ranger on Dvd. (wondrous item, level 30, PHB p. 230? - Worth: priceless)
34. An Orcish Teddy Bear, somewhat worn, missing one eye.
35. Wax sealed tins containing spices from far off lands.
36. A bevelled onyx mirror with a blackwood frame, clearly of interest to any shadow pact Warlocks. Is it whispering things to people in the night?
37. An eye floating in a widemouthed mason jar.
38. A set of gaming dice, weighted.
39. A book entitled Cetology, covered in whale skin.
40. A list of "Things found in a Treasure chest".

Ooooooohhhh

lol..
41. +1 Armor of Phlegethos. This leather armor explodes in a ball of fire upon activation, damaging the wearer and all those around him/her (I'm giving this 2 one of my PC's soon, though it probably won't be found in a chest, but, instead, found on some monster that is immune to fire, muhaha!!! idea shamelessly stolen from a DnD Podcast).
42. Adamantine. In a giant chunk. Too bad it weighs far too much for any of the low-level PC's to carry (or break apart for that matter).
43. A swarm of bugs crawling over the corpse of one of the PC's (who is still living for now, by the way).
44. A very distracting piece of literature containing no words, but many glorious pictures (think the Metal Gear Solid series).

BTW, how can the chest contain an even larger chest? Not sense making!
45. A Ceramic Disc with a spiraling groove marked with holes, and a strange stringless guitar with peg that matches the hole in the disc, a wooden arm and a diamond point. WHen used correctly, a strange noise similar to a voice speaking issues forth..."Five! Four! THree! Two! One! Zero!"

25. Schroedinger's cat grumbling about how you messed up one of the most elementary of thought experiments in the field of quantum physics.

Hits Shiftkitty over the head with a nonQuantum object.

"Thats not a cat, and no amount of reality manipulation is going to allow you to stuff your sisters body in a chest and pass it off as a Cat."

46. a note titled " i know who shot Tupac"

47. a severed hand. *note: one of your PC's has been missing it for years.
47. The weapons of mass destruction the G.W. was looking for.
49) *A nasty mumified human head missing an eye.... With a note scribbled in nigh-fadded writting; "the Head of Vecna"*
