What is "Merfolk Aggro"?
"Merfolk Aggro" is a Blue based aggro or aggro-control deck. It uses the merfolk "lord" creatures (creatures that give merfolk +1/+1) to max out your merfolk power. The finishing blow can be dealt many ways, though it ususally comes through clearing all blockers by tapping with Cryptic Command or running through with islandwalk + Tideshaper Mystic or Aquitect's Will.

Card Choices

Creatures

Show

Blue
Lord of Atlantis: The cheaper lord, run 4.
Merrow Reejerey: The more expensive lord, still run 4, he's actually better than Lord of Atlantis.
Tideshaper Mystic: The only 1cc creature you will run, possible to run for run through with islandwalk.
Slivergill Adept: The cantrip merfolk, run 4.
Riptide Pilferer: Jack the Ripper, he's very good but not an auto 4 of.
Fallowsage: Way to high of a cc for it's p/t and effect.
Surgespanner: Same as Fallowsage.
Shapesharer: Can kill legendary critters and copy enemy biggies.
Venser, Shaper Savant: Causes extreme tempo advantage.
Sower of Temptation: Greater Gargadon and Guile are big meanies, take 'em!
Stonybrook Banneret: Reduces almost all of your creature spells, solid addition.
Mothdust Changeling: Great one-drop with evasion that may activate a turn two 'grimoire, solid choice
Grimoire Thief: Interesting two-drop that RFG mills 3 whenever it attacks.
Ink Dissolver: Poor add for aggro most of the time, meant for mill.
Sage of Fables: Permenant pump that may draw you cards later.
Waterspout Weavers: Way to high cc for it's p/t and ability.
Black
Cursecatcher: Mostly just slows down aggro.
Deepchannel Mentor: I don't like this. Merfolk have islandwalk throughtout a lot of the game. Way too expensive anyways.
Drowner Initiate: For mill.
Gravergill Axeshark: Overpriced merfolk with persist.
Gravergill Duo: The best it can be is a 3/2 fear by itself; and that's by playing a black and blue spell.
Hollowsage: Too high cc for it's p/t and effect.
Inkfathom infiltrator: Meh. 2/1 Unblockable, Unable to block.
Leech Bonder: Interesting. Kills creatures. You don't have to move a counter that you own either.
Merrow Grimeblotter: Meh. It's ability doesn't do much for you at all.
Merrow Wavebreakers: Uneccesary, Merfolk have evasion most of the time.
Prismwake Merrow: ??? Is this card supposed to help?
Puresight Merrow: May draw you into something good.
Sygg, River Cutthroat: Cool ability, I like.
Wanderbrine Rootcutters: Not playable in any deck. Overpriced 3/3 that ONLY has green fear...?
White
Mirror Entity: Incredibly good, but mana intensive, In reality, you won't need to run it.
Veteran of the Depths: Way to high of a cc for it's p/t and effect
Stonybrook Schoolmaster: Creates tokens whenever it attacks, yet more meant for mill.
Reveillark: Excellent card, more meant for Reveillark Combo though.
White-Blue
Sygg, River Guide: One of the great four merfolk, so auto run 3.

Spells
Show

Blue
Wipe Away: It's too expensive but tempo advantage is always good
Aquitect's Will: Can cantrip for 0 with the Reejerey.
Ponder: A new age 1cc draw. Not as good as brainstorm or ancestral recall, though what is?
Familiar's Ruse: You lose way to much tempo to play this.
Ancestral Vision: A very good 1cc drop, gets worse the later the game goes though.
Wings of Velis Vel: Blue's ultimate combat trick.
Delay: A very good counter for aggro as three turns means alot more for aggro.
Rune Snag: For aggro, not the best choice
Cancel: Read above
Psionic Blast: Blue Char, and ultimate reach, run 4.
Cryptic Command: Excellent solid counter and tempo control, auto 4of.
Sage's Dousing: Successful counter in almost all Merfolk decks.
Crib Swap: It leaves a shapeshifter for you to kill, it's not bad nor good.
Mana Tithe: Good only in the first 4 turns.
Oblivion Ring: Another good choice, it can be killed though to be negated.
Weight of Conscience: Arguably better than pacifism yet you have better options.
Blue-White
Mirrorweave: Some funny and interesting things happen.
Colorless
Diviner's Wand: Way too high cc for It's ability.

Lands
Show

Wanderwine Hub: Merfolk tribal dual land.
Faerie Conclave: A great beater with a downside of coming into play tapped.
Island: ...
Plains: ...
Adarkar Wastes: Blue white painland, absolutely.
Flagstones of Trokair: Thins your deck for a plains whenver it gets destroyed.
Mutavault: Possibly a 3/3 + Islandwalking Merfolk!

Sideboard
Show

Colorless
Bottle Gnomes: Lifegain for heavy burn non-goyf aggro
Phyrexian Ironfoot: Stalls opposing aggro, not a bad SB choice
Academy Ruins: For comboing with Gnomes
Loxodon Warhammer: Another lifegain artifact that can be used against goyf aggro.
Tormod's Crypt: Good against Mannequin, Reveillark and anything that needs their graveyard.
Blue
Jace Beleren: You draw 3 cards to their 1, a sweet deal.
Unsummon: The cheapest of tempo killers, a decent choice.
White
Summon the School: A bad choice unless you transform your SB
Ajani Goldmane: Complete anti-aggro, solid choice.
Blue-White
Teferi's Moat: Actually useful for Power Glove and other one color heavy decks.

Matchups

Reveillark
Show

A good matchup I think. Its often good to mulligan down to 6 cards to make sure you have a nice and aggro hand. Don't keep a hand where you don't hit a lord. From there you race them, hit their rescources with the pilferer and counter larks and other win-conditions they have. Beware of venser.

Sideboard: Usually -1 Negate -1 Riptide Pilferer -2 Sage's Dousing +3 Faerie Trickery +1 Trickbind

Red Deck Wins
Show

Bad matchup, keldon marauders hurts, a lot. If you get to go 1st make sure to leave a rune snag open rather than drop a creature. Basically just try to keep things stable with counterspells and use cryptic command defensively. Wait until you can alpha-strike for lethal damage.

Sideboard: -4 Riptide Pilferer -1 Stonybrook Banneret -2 Sage's Dousing +3 Bottle Gnomes + 4 Flashfreeze

R/G/(b) Mana Ramp
Show

A ridiculously easy matchup. Empty your hand of creatures early and go aggro at them. Let whatever they cast resolve, counter harmonize if the opportunity arises. The major threat is once they hit 5 mana. Siege-Gang Commander = lose. Fortunately by the time he comes down we should be able to leave 2 mana open for a rune snag to catch him. Same goes for Void.
From there you should be able to lock them out whilst you kill them.

Sideboard: -4 Rune Snag +4 Flashfreeze
Post-Board be a lot more careful. You have to play slightly more conservative as they would have boarded in more sulfurous blast and pyroclasm.

Faeries
Show

I think this is another good matchup for us. Faeries rely on a lot of tempo tricks like pestermite but they can't really hurt us. We still go aggro much better than they do. A lot of faerie players (well, the ones I meet) make mistakes and forget that I have tricks too. So when they rely on Cryptic Command to save them from an alpha strike I just counter it and kill them. The idea here is to drop bigger creatures than their faeries. Then just beat them down. Simple, and surprisingly effective. Don't forget your islandwalking here (bannerets islandwalk even without the lord).

Sideboard: I don't sideboard against faeries, mostly because I don't meet a lot of them and when I do I usually do well. Besides mono-blue doesn't have many anti-faerie cards.

Doran Doran
Show

A bad matchup, very bad. Winnable if they don't hit a turn 2 Doran but still...
Here we basically try to do what permission does. Counter everything and win through card advantage. Fortunately Doran doesn't run too many harmonize's and we can mass-block any ohran vipers (although they've been dying out too lately). Cryptic Command often becomes an EOT bounce and then counter it when they try to drop it again. Best you can do here is hope they don't open with too many tarmogoyf.

Sideboarding: -4 Riptide Pilferer (he is not getting through) + 4 Unsummon
Another option is to take out banneret + dousing combo for Flashfreeze. I don't like this as I need the cantrips to win.

White Weenie
Show

Depends a lot on their luck and build here. Knight of Meadowgrain can be annoying but not much else. It basically comes down to who draws the most lords wins. Fortunately we have 8 lords to their 4 so I count this a good matchup. Cryptic Command usually wins this game.

Sideboard:-2 Riptide Pilferer +2 Unsummon (combat trick, bouncing the cenn).

DragonStorm
Show

Ridiculously easy matchup, they're usually forced to waste their burn on the lords and riptide pilferer and between that and counterspells spinerock knoll will never go off. If they hardcast a hellkite you can counter it without a problem. If they manage to dragonstorm then you're screwed but most decks are. Just kill them before this happens and counter that crucial rite of flame.

Sideboard: -4 Rune Snag -1 Negate +4 Flashfreeze +1 Trickbind

Rogues
Show

A 50/50 matchup. You just have to try and trade creatures. Once they empty their hand they're helpless compared to the card advantage you get from vision and cantrips.

Sideboard: -1 Negate -1 Riptide Pilferer +2 Bottle Gnomes

It looks good. More comments later. Now I think I remember you or someone else saying that you didn't like this build, but I should be in the OP.

Yeah he should, thats why I just posted the top 8 decklists. I believe he is still editing the OP, so it will take sometime.
Wouldn't it be nice, if they had some sort of feature on the forums that allowed specific users to edit the OP? It would make it a lot easier on the ones who are managing the thread.

No problem. I have probably did the same thing this week at least once or twice. If you see me do it, call my attention to it. :D
I think this should be brought back in th DtB. the only problem is only few people run merfolk. I for one didnt run it but when I decided to build one its powerful and has lots of answers for decks like Larkcombo and big mana which is famous right now. not to mention it has pretty good match-ups against faes and other tribal decks.

I agree completely. I didn't play Merfolk last night, (rogue rack instead) but one of my friends did and he done really well with it. This deck has had way more top 8s than some of the other DTB, with several in the last few weeks.
I did.

I'll edit now.

Red Deck Wins

Ok a few changes:

The two recent tournaments that Merfolk has placed in look like they were from last year's states. We need those results at the top of the decklists with the dates that they won, that way people will see that there are recent top 8 wins with this deck. Right now it looks like "That was the deck that did good before Lark and Mana Ramp". So if you could quote my post so you can see the formatting of both of these decklists, then you can just cut and paste both of these before everything else. They really need to be noticed.

Has anyone tried out a U/B build. Merfolk will be in those colors after shadowmoor.
my merfolk/angelfish deck looks like this

I'm too cheap to hunt down pain lands and psi-blast isn't really necessary with the burn. I LOVE the Anvils because they let you do so much. 3rd turn, you attack with a measly 2/1 Adept.. they aren't gonna block that... it's now a 6/1! it works well wth island walk and flying too. It really should read deal 4 damage to target player.
I love this deck. The manabase can be mildly problematic on occcasion, but that's to be expected with 3 colors.
The 2 Wills and 2 Mystics are at 2 each simply because I couldn't decide which was better... a 1/1 creature that can be bigger later, or a 1 cmc cantrip. I have no preference, and really don't notice much difference either way
Has anyone tried out a U/B build. Merfolk will be in those colors after shadowmoor.

Here is a skeleton that I'd use. I'd build it around Stonybrook, Finkel and Nameless Inversion. You also get Thoughtsieze and Deathmark in the board. Black doesn't currently offer much more than that for Fish. Hopefully there are some quality merfolk/wizards in Shadowmoor.

3 Stonybrook Banneret
4 Lord of Atlantis
4 Silvergill Adept
4 Merrow Reejerey
4 Shadowmage Infiltrator
1 Venser, Shaper Servant

4 Nameless Inversion

3 Cryptic Command
MFS, you might consider Blades of Velis Vel over Fists of the Anvil, only because it makes your angel a merfolk, maybe giving it +4/+2 and another creature +2/+0. Plus it lets Wanderwine hub come in untapped, and Adept cost 3 less.

I think it bears mention that in a deck without plains, Nimbus maze is worse than a plains. Nimbus maze will never tap for blue, and will maybe tap for white. At least a plains will always tap for white. Imagine: Turn one hub/wastes, turn two ... Maze. Can't even play Sygg. And if you aren't playing Sygg, might as well only play hubs and Islands.
Did anyone test anything like this? I know it may sound crazy, but:

4 x Sigil Tracer
4 x Lord of Atlantis
4 x Merrow Reejerey
4 x Silvergil Adept
4 x Stonybrook Banneret
2 x Shapesharer

4 x Luminescent Rain
4 x Wings of Velis Vel
4 x Ovinize / Unsummon
3 x Merrow Commerce

3 x Faerie Conclave
2 x Treetop Village
4 x Yavimaya Coast
1 x Pendelhaven
13 x Island

Tracer is meant to be able to copy Rain at the end of opponent's turn, to add some (unexpected?) life gain to the deck. What do you think?
Glad to see some posting going on here .
I don't see that much synergy with Luminescent Rain and Sigil Tracer, I'd rather use Judge of Currents.
So, has anyone had any positive playtesting or tournemant feedback?

Actually, Tracer can copy any instant/sorcery spell - he can kill back with [c]
Eyeblight's Ending[/c], give you a free Command (counter the blue one). With 4 merfolks out (and 7 mana) he can get you an instant 24 life gain (30 with Commerce). May be to slow to work though... :/

It's decent tech but it still doesn't replace flashfreeze and you better make sure you devote enough board space to other matchups.

Mono-Blue is the way to go right now. White simply doesn't offer enough to justify inclusion and if you add white it leaves you wide open to magus of the moon and prevents you from running a full rack of mutavaults.
I disagree, Sygg, River Guide isn't worth the splash to you? You also have decent combo lands.

I would like to comment on something that I didn't notice before today:

Lord of Atlantis counters the Mirror Entity component of the Reveillark combo; they all become 0/0 Merfolk, and Lord of Atlantis' effect pumps ALL Merfolk, not just the ones you control. That means they all end up as 1/1s.
:D nice find! Thanks man.

A Decklist by Edilbero Jaso-Jaso 7th Place - Neutral Grounds Standard Tournament March 8th, 2008

Even though this is probably the official deck list, I think you should slice out that 2x Nimbus Maze for the other two Adarkar Wastes, or at least mention it in a footnote, since Nimbus Maze is terrible if you don't play Islands and Plains (as thepiper mentioned).

I would like to be a deck doctor. I posted often when Merfolk was DtB, and I fiddled with my class schedule, so I'll actually be able to attend FNM and post some results with other Merfolk builds (mono-U, U/B, and maybe U/W). Here's the UR deck I've had success with:
[deck=U/R Merfolk]
// Lands
6 * Snow-Covered Mountain
8 * Snow-Covered Island
3 * Faerie Conclave
4 * Shivan Reef

// Creatures
4 * Lord of Atlantis
4 * Tideshaper Mystic
4 * Silvergill Adept
4 * Merrow Reejerey
4 * Mogg Fanatic

// Spells
4 * Rift Bolt
4 * Incinerate
4 * Psionic Blast
4 * Rune Snag
3 * Wings of Velis Vel

// Sideboard
4 * Riptide Pilferer
4 * Phyrexian Ironfoot
4 * Trickbind
3 * Boomerang
[/deck]
I really just don't know right now about angelfish, It's just not as good as Merfolk; you have to cram all these cards in and eventually find yourself running a lot of 1-ofs and 2-ofs...

The only intentional 2-of in my deck is Sygg... the Moats are 2-ofsimply because I don't have a SB (cuz I don't play in sanctioned events) and i explained the Will/Mystic situation... it could easily be 4-of one or the other, but I prefer the split.
I originally had a WU build and it was alright, but I find the burn that R offers to be insanely helpful, whereas in WB you have Psiblast and... sunlance? meh.

And for whoever suggested the Blades of Velis Vel, I actually had those in for a few days, it's good, but there are certain situations where the Fists are strictly better than Blades (namely, turn 2/3 when you swing unblocked with one guy for 1 or 2 and it becomes 5 or 6... right off the bat).

Okay, I know you, just try to post once or twice at a minimum every 1-2 days.

I disagree, Sygg, River Guide isn't worth the splash to you? You also have decent combo lands.

Sygg is obviously a solid bear but I find his ability sometimes doesn't get to be used as often as I'd like since it costs 2 mana. He's often a glorified Grimoire Thief without the counter ability.

In the 3 slot white offers Oblivion Ring and Mirror Entity but we're already competing with Merrow Reejerey and Psionic Blast in that slot so those aren't terribly helpful either.

Running 10 non-basics and 2 less mutavaults to justify Sygg and some sideboard cards isn't justified in the current meta IMO.
