Makeshift Mannequin?
Makeshift Mannequin was a breakout deck at States ’07 with the release of Lorwyn. It has a powerful tempo engine of Evoke elementals and Makeshift Mannequin, and can fluidly assume either Control or Aggro roles in any given matchup.

How to Play Mannequin

Mannequin is an Aggro-Control deck with its game centred on tempo. You spend the early game playing bleed-stemming drops like Epochrasite, evoked Shriekmaws or Phyrexian Ironfoot, and start preparing for the midgame with suspended Riftwing Elementals, evoked Mulldrifters and Jon Finkels.

After about turn 5, you start establishing your board presence with hardcast elementals, recurring your comes-into-play effects like bounce and kill, and start chipping away with your evasive 2/2s, before ending the game with a big swing or a Profane Command.

The important thing about this deck is that is doesn’t need a big finisher to win; it ekes out a win with games of attrition and cumulative tempo off innocuous plays. It’s not about the power of the individual cards, more about the engine as a whole.

CARD SELECTION

The Engine

Makeshift Mannequin – The namesake, and the card that makes the deck hum. By bringing in instant-speed comes-into-play effects for only , you can reap mana advantage in spades, and card advantage out of your deceased or evoked early game plays in midcombat or at end of turn. Because you’re not reanimating big heavy hitters you rely upon, the ‘frailness’ drawback is negated, since the CIPEs are what make the creatures cost-efficient anyway.
Shriekmaw – The card of the format. Deals with most things in the format, although it is shifting to a place where ‘target nonblack nonartifact’ is an uncommon moniker, and Morningtide looks like it may do more for that.
Mulldrifter – An increasingly popular card, an evasive cantrip bear for two and a Counsel of the Soratami. The centrepiece of the deck’s ridiculous CA engine.

Creatures

Riftwing Cloudskate – An early game play that starts the midgame tempo attacks well. Evasive bear like the Mulldrifters, a curve aid, and a general five-mana catchall answer and question in one.
Epochrasite – A cheap chump blocker in the early game, but after trading with an X/1, it comes back as a 4/4 haste monster. Nigh-invincible to all but Crib Swap and Disintegrate, Shriekmaw-proof, and cheap.
Oona’s Prowler – An uncommon inclusion, but certainly not a bad one at 2CC for a 3/1 evasion. The ability is mostly irrelevant, but can set up the occasional back-breaking play, dropping beastie into the ‘yard at EOT to hit it with a Mannequin.
Phyrexian Ironfoot – A nice 3CC, Shriekmaw-proof Troll-wall. Epitomises the fluid nature of the deck, as it can be both an early game defender for Aggro matchups, or a quick, efficient threat for Control.
Shadowmage Infiltrator – A great evasive creature for chipping away at an opponent’s lifetotal while establishing your huge grip for overwhelming the midgame. It’s 3 toughness is slightly problematic, given the Sulfurous Blasts, Incinerates, and Nameless Inversions around the place, but not bad.
AEthersnipe – Like Shriekmaw and Mulldrifter, but with a bigger body and no evasion. Often acts in place of or alongside Riftwings, but in a different slot in the curve.
Bottle Gnomes – Typically a SB option to help stem the bleeding against Aggro, these little men are popular with users of Grim Harvest, to create an infinite 3-life a turn plus Pacifism for 8 mana.
Venser, Shaper Savant – Not quite a ‘No’, but a 4-mana ‘Not now’ to anything. Comes on a nice 2/2 body for chipping away.
Mournwhelk – The closest thing to Persecute in the metagame. Can be devastating when brought into play repetitively over a short period of time, especially against Control or Dragonstorm.
Sower of Temptation – A nice anti-Aggro card, stealing tempo and giving you a faster clock.

Spells
Thoughtseize – A solid black disruption spell. Not a must-have, but never a bad inclusion.
Ponder – Generally, this deck wants to be playing a Faerie Conclave or CIPT land on the first-turn, but if you cut back on those, a healthy one-drop to fix your hands and dig for lands.
Grim Harvest – A useful addition to Mannequin itself, this can allow you to “go indefinite” once you hit 8 mana or so, recurring Mulldrifters, Bottle Gnomes, and Shriekmaws every turn.
Mind Stone – Not an auto-include, but can be useful in some builds.
Trickbind – SB fodder for DStorm. I hear they lose to it.
Damnation – A stem-off for the fast Aggro decks, which is typically one-sided or timed for a large advantage, like unsuspending a Riftwing or two on the following turn. MD or SB is fine.
Cryptic Command – A problematic casting cost, but otherwise it’s gold tempo. Tap out to fog and alpha strike, counter and bounce, so many options.
Profane Command – The best kill spell around, recurs your tempo creatures, removes, wins.

Planeswalkers?
There are only two options here, Jace and Liliana. Liliana is not really worth the effort, as she comes down too late for her discard to mean anything, there’s no real broken spells that you can tutor up and trump with, and the reanimation effect is decidedly win-more.

Jace is usable for a CA engine, but it’s best against Control, and Finkel does much the same job.

Lands
There are a lot of various choices you can make here. The duals are all obvious includables, but some other nonbasic considerations include:
Mouth of Ronom – Cleans out bigger creatures like Teferi, Goyfs, etc., but requires an investment of snow basics.
Scrying Sheets – Not a common choice due to the colourless nature of the mana it makes, but it’s still includable if you run the snow lands.
Desert – Deals with Faeries, a very problematic matchup for us, and isn’t bad against Goblins either. Almost a must-have.
Urza’s Factory – Not commonly used, but a one-of Factory can win the drawn out Control games when you hit as much mana as this deck does.
Faerie Conclave – A good first turn play for a deck with no first turn plays like this, it plays late game evasive beater, chump blocker, and generally all-round good.
Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth – Fixes your mana, but also fixes the ever-common black-playing opponents’ too.

This deck uses Mannequin and evoke to synergize with Deathrender and planned Damnations. It uses Mournwhelks and Augurs for discard vs control decks. Augurs and Damnations help to stave off aggro and make Ironfoots and Epochrasites unecessary. It begins to gain control and win much quicker than the traditional build, but has more difficulty recovering from a bad early game. Unlike conventional Mannequin decks, this deck plays more with big single-card effects and fast recovery, rather than an attrition engine.

This thread is to replace the old one in the DtB subforum, which has reached more than a thousand posts. Let me know if there's anything missing/broken coding.
look at the creatures section, the font might be too large, which I think is what you don't want. Also, the spells section, you have [ size 1] next to thoughtseize. Check those out.
Everything looks good to me.
In the How to Play and Creatures section you said "Riftwing Elemental" when I'm guessing you meant "Riftwing Cloudskate."

But other than that, it looks very well done.
There we go, fixed the font size and the Riftwing tag.

I kept the formatting simple, so that when the thread gets updated more frequently, the OP of the new iteration can just copy-paste the majority of it, and just substitute decklists, add card choices, etc.
There's still the tag next to Thoughtseize in the spells section.

And how is mournwhelk close to persecute? >__> it's a four mana mind rot... that gets recurred.
There's still the tag next to Thoughtseize in the spells section.

And how is mournwhelk close to persecute? >__> it's a four mana mind rot... that gets recurred.

And that's why this metagame makes me sad.

Fixed the tagging error, thanks.
rune snag should be in the spells selection. i dont particularly run them, however it was said in a major (starcity i believe?) article to replace epochrasites with them.

ill link you later. its 6:30am and i cant sleep for some reason and im to lazy to look it up at the moment...

Thoughts?
There's still the tag next to Thoughtseize in the spells section.

And how is mournwhelk close to persecute? >__> it's a four mana mind rot... that gets recurred.

Persecute would typically hit around 3-4 cards for one card. Evoke MW, mannequin him back into play next turn...4 cards for your one AND you get a 3/3 beater. That's how. No it isn't persecute, but thank god. Spells that virtually auto-win games shouldn't be playable on turn 4.

(and Wrath effects don't count. Any aggro player worth his salt isn't going to auto-lose to Wrath, just have to play smart).
Can we get some matchup anaysis and strategies in the first post?

~Thanks
Can we get some matchup anaysis and strategies in the first post?

~Thanks

I agree matchups would be sweet :D. If more analysis is needed ( which I doubt) I can always throw in my next FNM matches (gonna be facing pickles, dstorm and more than likely a few elf builds).
I have a few qualms about matchup analysis inclusion:

1) It's a lot of work for a little gain. I don't have the time to perform the tests over a sample size big enough to be accurate.

2) As new decks come and go, the frequent revision of them is time-consuming.

3) Strategies and matchups at the moment are so diverse that slight variations of builds can mean a big difference, and to exhaustively explain them all is too complex.

Generally speaking, I think it's better to leave strategy discussion remain in the actual thread, so people with queries can direct them relevant to specific builds or metagames.
Definitely never heard of this new Mannequin.dec before.

What is it.

How do I own with it.

Does it like cheese and/or handisnacks.

rune snag should be in the spells selection. i dont particularly run them, however it was said in a major (starcity i believe?) article to replace epochrasites with them.

I believe it was tcg where they suggested that. Good call imo, i've done the same thing.

On another note, thoughts on sower of temptation in this deck? Can be sweet with mannequin as well, no?
Then again,i must admit i didn't play a lot yet with mannequin.dec, though things will change^^:D

Can anyone give a quick sketch with the good/bad matchups?
Looks like this deck has some "decent" matchups, but almost never "really good" matchups,or am i mistaken?
Sooo...played last night. Tourney was cancelled so I just sat around and played some guys. Got ROLLED by a goblins deck. Man was it fast, and good. Decided Bottle Gnomes are a must for Sb because I lost 4 games after I had completely wrecked his board...because he topdecked an Incinerate. That's how fast he hit me.

It would be turn 4, I would damnation, then control things well, begin beating him down to 10ish life...Incinerate...game. Most of his gobbos were black, so Maw was useless. Any other suggestions? (BTW, Epoch is far too slow).

It's been tough working the Mournwhelk/Aethersnipe balance. Snipe is sooo good vs aggro (and led to my only 2 wins vs gobbos) but useless against control...and whelk is vice versa. I'm considering removing Augur for 4 of the other two...or just moving Whelk to the SB.

I don't know about blowouts, but I know it does quite poorly against Sonicboom and Faeries. Sonicboom has way too much permission, and Faeries is faster and has enough disruption to get there.

I think it would be pretty good, though not as more than a two-of.

As for good matchups, I don't have a whole lot of experience with the deck, but I can imagine that it would do well against midrange and non-permission control.
If goblins get you down, id run 4 Nameless inversion + 4 bottle gnomes sb. Not much else you can do.
I haven't seen any good Goblin builds yet. Only the Gargadon ones and you can totally outplay those decks. I've gone through 3 consecutive SGC and still won with a Gargadon on the way in.

Well this one is good. I'll get his decklist cause he's my friend. Wow it's solid.

I've seen a few decent lists online (The Win-A-Car winner's is pretty good), but never actually come across them in playtesting randoms online.
Sooo... is this going to replace the DtB Mannequin thread anytime soon?

His is similar to that one. But no gargys and no siege-gang commanders. MD Fodder Launch, Mad Aunties and Incinerate.

It should. Is there someone I need to poke to get it moved faster?
basically, I focus on dumping shroud and protection creatures into the graveyard (or hardcast the), the recur them via Makeshift Mannequin or Profane Command. Also allows for a brutal Cairn Wanderer. Cards in list are in order from CMC and color.

Looks interesting, but that's a reanimator deck. Just because you run mannequin doesn't make it mannequin (just like a Sonic Boom wouldn't be Teferi Teachings just because Teferi is in the deck). "Mannequin" is just a name given to a deck/style using evoke creatures and makeshift mannequin to gain card advantage. Try posting in one of the reanimator threads. You'll probably get better and more rsponses.
hello fellow Mannequin players! I've been playing Sonic Boom/UB Teachings/Pickles and similar decks since Time Spiral Block. these decks don't do too well these days, especially against aggro decks and my sworn enemy, GB elves :[.

to remedy this, I decided to pick up the last few cards I needed to make Mannequin! all I needed were some Epochrasites, they'll be coming in the mail shortly so I can't wait to get started on this deck. here is my list:

4 Faerie Conclave
4 Desert (possibly going to use Mouth of Ronom but in my meta Desert seems better because we have atleast a few GB elves and a couple Fairy decks)
4 River of Tears
4 Snow-Covered Island
6 Snow-Covered Swamp
4 Underground River

4 Epochrasite
4 Mulldrifter
4 Phyrexian Ironfoot
4 Riftwing Cloudskate
4 Shadowmage Infiltrator
4 Shriekmaw
1 Venser, Shaper Savant

3 Damnation
4 Makeshift Mannequin
1 Profane Command
1 Loxodon Warhammer

3 Pithing Needle
1 Extirpate
2 Sudden Death
2 Sudden Spoiling
1 Damnation
2 Venser, Shaper Savant
4 Bottle Gnomes

very standard. any thoughts on this? my sideboard contains Pithing Needle for stray D-storm and anything else that could cause problems for me. I only have on Extirpate right now, I may buy some more if I feel I need them. I don't really need that many IMO right now. Sudden Death and Sudden Spoiling are my spot removal (sorta) for stuff like Pickles and Elves and things of that nature.

I put the 4th Damnation in the side because everyone in my meta plays aggro of some sort, all creature heavy decks. I wanted more than 1 Venser in the main deck so I just put some more in the side, and Bottle Gnomes are mostly filler but can help me out in some matchups I guess.

how is this decks matchup against GB elves? what about mono B rack? fairys?

thanks!

thanks!

I've played three matches against elves so far. The first two matches I won, even without SB it's in Mannequins favor. The third match I lost due to bad draws and colorscrew. Haven't played against Rack yet. One match against Faeries I lost 2-0 and I run 3 Sudden Spoiling and 1 Damnation. Nameless Inversion against a turn 2 Oona's Prowler is a must I'd say. Beware of counters and Mistbind Clique which basically makes you lose a turn.

I ran one copy of Loxodon Warhammer myself but I sided it out whenever I could. Swap it for another Profane Command which is much more useful.
Faeries is a poor matchup for this deck. They're usually a lot faster, and if permission can shut down Mulldrifter, then there's nothing to really stop them in the air.
yeah Faeries are hard to beat, I think the Deserts help though.
Ya i just played monday night magic last night i took first place with my mannequin deck. I had a couple really intense games . Round one i played a mono blue merfolk deck. his guys came down fast and could swing through with islandwalk even if i didnt play an island b/c of the tideshapeer mystic. He was also running a permission package with runesnag and the blue command. Game two was against an insane reanimator deck. It used some draw/discard effects to pump cards like akroma and bodargan hellkite into the gy then bring them back via mannequin or dread return. the only reason i won this matchup was bc he didnt tutor a dragon with the liliana when he should have which then let me bounce his 8 counter vess with a topdeck clouskate. Next was the Doran teck theat won the recent protour. I actually steamrolled this guys two games in a row. And finnaly was a GB elf build featuring gofy and troll. But MD damnation and sower out of the SB won me this match. So overall i went 4-0-0.

Here is my list for reference.

Lands: 26
6 Snow Swamps
4 Snow Islands
4 river of tears
4 faerie conclave
4 underground river
3 desert
1 urzas factory

Creatures: 21
4 phyrecian ironfoot
3 shadowmage infiltraitor
2 venser
4 mulldrifter
4 shriekmaw
4 riftwing cloudskate

Other Spells: 13
4 Runesnag
4 Makeshift mannequin
3 damnations
2 profane command

Normal mannequin build but i replaced mouth with desert which IMO are much better. Also i SB epoch and play runesnag maindeck which also improved the deck win percentage IMO. I would like to hear what you all thinik, so how about it???
Changes are fine. I also think Deserts are more worthwhile than Mouth of Ronom now. I can't think of a single X/4 that's worth killing with it.

What do you sb Epochrasite in against? I've got a little voice telling me that if you're not MDing it, it's probably not worth the SB space it takes.

Well my meta has the sparatic goblin/elf/kithkin kinda decks in which he looks pretty good. A 4/4 dude that keeps coming back kinda helps out in the creature race. Though i will admit he will most likely be cut when i can get ahold of better cards. I still dont own a single copy of extirpate or thoughtseize which would probably be nice in the board. Oh that reminds me in the match against the reanimator deck a guy triple extirpated me in the order of damnation/shriekmaw/vensern over the course of turns 4-10 and i still won thanks to shadowmage infiltraitor and triple conclave, sorry i just thought that it was funny. He really should have extirpated mannequin but he chose to wait until i playued mannequin and hit whatever i was targeting, lol oh well
KiLl7r0cItY what is your sideboard now?

I also thought about swapping Epochrasite for Rune Snag but I now feel I'm running too few creatures. Have to watch out for Eyes of the Wisent too now. Also swapped my Nekrataal's for 2 Nameless inversions main. Any thoughts about this?

// 25 lands
7 SC Island
4 Frost Marsh
8 SC Swamp
4 Mouth of Ronom
2 Faerie Conclave

// 17 creatures
4 Phyrexian Ironfoot
4 Mulldrifter
4 Shriekmaw
4 AEthersnipe
1 Wydwen, the Biting Gale

// 18 spells
4 Makeshift Mannequin
1 Grim Harvest
3 Profane Command
1 Damnation
3 Sudden Spoiling
2 Nameless Inversion
4 Rune Snag

// sideboard
1 Nameless Inversion
4 Mournwhelk
3 Bottle Gnomes
4 Flashfreeze
3 Deathmark
Any thoughts about this?

Some individual card choice criticisms...
// 17 creatures
4 Phyrexian Ironfoot
4 Mulldrifter
4 Shriekmaw
4 AEthersnipe--4 seems excessive. Venser, Shaper Savant is much better almost always.
1 Wydwen, the Biting Gale

// 18 spells
4 Makeshift Mannequin
1 Grim Harvest
3 Profane Command
1 Damnation--Is this because you only have 1? I would advise running 3-4 or none at all for consistency's sake
3 Sudden Spoiling-- Maindeck? I would recommend putting some form of carddraw here...either Shadowmage Infiltrator or Jace Beleren
2 Nameless Inversion
4 Rune Snag

// sideboard
1 Nameless Inversion
4 Mournwhelk
3 Bottle Gnomes
4 Flashfreeze--What red/green non-creature spell are you so afraid of? Remove Soul seems better here because it can come in vs black decks for Shriekmaw and vs almost all aggro.
3 Deathmark
Just my thoughts

Thanks for the reply. The problem is simply money. To be honest I haven't even got the third Profane Command yet.

AEthersnipe - I like that they're 4/4. Sure Venser's better but see below. What do you think about Riftwing Cloudskate?

Damnation - Borrowed from a friend, it's the only one in my group. I'll take it out.

Sudden Spoiling - Replacement Damnations. It was mentioned somewhere in the previous thread. It helps against Faeries and it's pretty cool to use after Garruk's overrun. I like them but yes draw would be better.

Venser, Jace, Shadowmage Infiltrator - These are 6-9 euros a piece here which I think is just too much. I set out to start my Standard adventure with a low budget version of Mannequin with some borrowed stuff. I've finished 3rd and 7th with it so far. I'll have to think about this. Which of these you think is most necessary?

Flashfreeze - Goyf, Doran, Garruk, Dragonstorm, Goblins, Big Mana. Doran mostly. This and Deathmark are against t2 Dorans which is otherwise pretty unbeatable for this deck. But I'll try to find some Remove Souls.
-------
edit: This was ofcourse before I had the Rune Snags in... So maybe I can throw the Flashfreezes and the lone Nameless Inversion out of the SB, replace them with 2 Remove Soul and the Sudden Spoilings. Drop the Damnation. That leaves 4 slots maindeck.
KiLl7r0cItY what is your sideboard now?

// sideboard

4 Flashfreeze
3 Deathmark

My current SB is as follows:
4 Eopchrasites
3 Bottle Gnomes
3 Sudden Death
2 Mournwhelk
2 Sower of Temptation
1 Damnation

Eventually i would like to get 4 extirpates and take out the epochrasites

On a side note since i feel i have jsut the right amount of creatures but that may be bc i run three damnations MD

On another note i would try and do this with your list

-4 Frost Marsh
-4 Mouth of ronom
-2-6 some combination of SC islands and swamps
-1 Wydwem
-1 grim harvest (its not very good)
-3 sudden death
-1 nameless inversion

+2 conclave
+ 3 desert
+1 Factory
+4 River of tears/underground river (both if possible)
+2 Venser
+4 shadowmage (he is pretty much the l33t)

my biggest suggestion is the shadowmages and venser you wont be sorry if you get ahold of some
AEthersnipe - I like that they're 4/4. Sure Venser's better but see below. What do you think about Riftwing Cloudskate?--I think either is as good as the other.

Sudden Spoiling - Replacement Damnations. It was mentioned somewhere in the previous thread. It helps against Faeries and it's pretty cool to use after Garruk's overrun. I like them but yes draw would be better.---yeah I mentioned it and it is good there...and useless vs control So SB definitely

Venser, Jace, Shadowmage Infiltrator - Which of these you think is most necessary?Meta choice. If you face a good amount of black, then fear is worthless. If you don't, then they have to actually kill shadowmages, unlike Jace who offs himself eventually.

Flashfreeze - Goyf, Doran, Garruk, Dragonstorm, Goblins, Big Mana. Doran mostly. This and Deathmark are against t2 Dorans which is otherwise pretty unbeatable for this deck. But I'll try to find some Remove Souls.---Remove Soul is a common in 10th (I think? I have a billion from Chronicles) and the only non-creature there is DS. So remove soul ALSo hits shriekmaws, drifters, akromas, etc.
