What is the rock?
The Rock is a control deck that utilizes many disruption effects (spot removal, mass removal, discard, etc) to disrupt the opponent's stragey until you can play a big creature to attack with for the win. There are several versions of The Rock and many cards to choose from to build it. It has been quiet for sometime now and with the release of Lorwyn it is ready for a comeback to the top tier tourney scene.

The Rock history:
It's been a while since The Rock truly saw competitive play. One of the first involved such powerhouses as Spiritmonger and Pernicious Deed. Kamigawa Block saw a revival of The Rock with cards like Sakura-Tribe Elder and Kokusho, the Evening Star. With Damnation being a control staple since it's release, the return of Troll Ascetic, and the new Duress (Thoughtseize) The Rock is ready for a comeback to the major tournament level.

Cards to choose from:

From straight up control builds, to mid-range, and even all out aggro The Rock has many cards to choose from. Take a look...
(B = budget, budget = less than $10/card.)

You can find basic lands (Forest, Swamp) in Time Spiral, Xth, and Lowyn.

Coldsnap

Thanks to Hodoku for the great banners here and throughout the boards.

Here's a link to the old thread made by Prince Charming Frog, whom I thank for maintaining the previous thread.

Keys to remember

Sometimes it's ok to mulligan. If you find yourself starting with less than 7 cards each game then it may be time to examine the entire build. Often times in my build it seemed like I was trying to be both TarmoRack and Elf Machine at the same time. This is a common pitfall in many builds. The focus should be applying a beatsticks early, and supporting them via control spells. The Rock does not have to be Tribal, although one can make it such if need be.

splashing colors

White
Splashing white will give you access to some of the best spot removal in the game, and also some other utility creatures and lands. However this will lean more towards a deck like Doran Doran as opposed to The Rock.
cards to splash in white

creatures
Doran, the Siege Tower: 5/5 for 3, but you need at least 1 of each color to play him. Birds of Paradise helps with that.
Gaddok Teeg: The halfling on a bender stops Wrath of God, Damnation, Molten Disaster (and other [manacost]X[/manacost] spells), Cryptic Command (and other 4 cmc spells). Really good vs. control.
Saffi Eriksdotter: Teeg's gf helps keep him alive, and other creature too.
Mirror Entity: Makes all your creatues X/X. Useful against other tribal decks.
Ajani Goldmane: 1-of in the deck. Has quite a few useful abilities.

spells
Condemn: Standard version of Swords to Plowshares.
Oblivion Ring: RFG on a 3 cmc enchantment.
Crib Swap: Which is easier to deal with: Akroma, Angel of Wrath or a 1/1 creature?

lands
Horizon Canopy: Pings and can draw in a pinch.
Brushland: Horizon Canopy w/o the card draw.
Caves of Kolios: Painland.
Forbidding Watchtower: With Doran in play it's a 5/5.

Red
Red can be used for LD and burn. Aggro-Loam is a good extended deck right now and this may have a similar flavor to it. When running this it may be best to load up on Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, Gemstone Mine, Terramorphic Expanse, and Crucible of Worlds to keep your land coming.
cards to splash in red

creatures
Avalanche Riders: LD and a 2/2 haste creature.
Greater Gargadon: 9/7 beater. Wins games
Detritivore: Eats Tier 1 deck manabases for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

spells
Demolish: Destroys land or creature.
Incinerate: 3 damage at instant speed, kills regen critters.
Molten Disaster: Possible uncounterable sweeper.
Boom//Bust: Double sided LD card.
Pyroclasm: Sweeps away the X/2 critters.

lands
Graven Cairns: Washes mana togther. Not a good turn 2 play. 2-3 max.
Sulfurous Springs: Painland
Karplusan Forest: Painland

Blue
Some players like to splash . Recently a tempo-goyf deck has been floating around some metas with decent success. Bounce, card draw, and counters are what would need to be in here. You may want to use Quirion Dryad here as playing and spells causes her to get bigger.
cards to splash for blue

creatures
Riftwing Cloudskate: Suspends on turn 2. Bounces a permanent. Evasion.
Mulldrifter: Draws cards. Evasion.
Aeon Chronicler: Suspend-o-draw.

spells
Rune Snag: Counter. Hard to avoid counter late game.
Remove Soul: Counters creatures.
Delay: Suspends their spell for 3 turns. Good for cmc spells with X in them (as X=0 when the suspend ends).
Unsummon: Save your creature.

lands
Underground River: Painland
Yavimaya Coast: Painland
very good job on the new thread.
I am planning on running this at FNM tomorrow. I own all the cards in the deck and do not have a lot of money to spend. However I am willing to buy uncommons and commons for the deck.

4 Llanowar Wastes
3 Treetop Village
2Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
5 Forest
8 Swamp

4 Korlash, Heir to Blackblade
4 Wall of Roots
4 Shriekmaw
4 Tombstalker

4 Damnation
4 Harmonize
4 Tendrils of Corruption
4 Nameless Inversion
4 Stupor

Sideboard
4 Sudden Death Blink
3 Withered Wretch Blink/Mannequin

Nice. Maybe include the splash for cards such as Doran, the Siege Tower, and powerful White Removal?
Do the totems (Black, Green) still have a place in The Rock? Or has their time passed, with the emergence of an even more aggro-dominated format?

I'm running a more controlling build, and it still has 2 of Green and 1 of Black (even though he did help in the one Lorwyn-legal FNM i've been to so far, it feels like he won't stick around for long). What do you suggest I put in for them?

Edit: Sorry, just saw the Phyrexian Totem listed there. But I still want to know if Weatherseed can stay viable.
Finally a new Rock thread. Does Mr. Prince Charming endorse this? ;)

I sent him a PM. I haven't seen him on here in 2 weeks...if not more.

I definitely wasn't trying to step on anyone's toes here...as I stated in my post on the old thread.

I'll go ahead an add it. Thanks for the catch.

The Totems imho aren't as good as they were before Xth due to a lot of burn in most metas, but for budget reasons it's still good.

Perhaps.

Splashing for Doran could wind up leading this deck into the direction of Doran/Doran...which is fine.

I could put up some info about splashing over the weekend.

No offense to Mr Prince Charming, but I believe it's about time Rock had a new thread. The old one is like 40+ pages. I'm pretty sure he is fine with it.

On a side note, Garruk seems like a Rock winner now. I've seen decks include Lilliana Vess in MB too (and using Garruk post-SB instead). Rock now looks much more pro-active, and I am loving the direction it is going. However, I feel that the deck can be improved much more, hence I am not concentrating on Rock for the moment.

I find it nice that Troll Ascetic found its way back into Rock decks. Also note how each of the deck that post high placings contain 4 Tarmogoyfs. Time to be wary for the presence of the Wallet-Slayers...!!

It's basically a tempo deck. Of course in certain games you can hit Rain of Tears as early as the second turn and start to turn the game quickly to your favor. This helps a lot with the push towards the 3cc curve before seeing things go off. You've also got good cards for your own color fixing and tricks like Edge of Autumn, Flagstones, and Terramorphic Expanse that boost the early 'Goyf. I have less spot removal than some would like, but I've opted for a creature base that surely gets bigger and nasty quicker than theirs and this deck should be. You should always be a step ahead of the other player mana wise. Land destruction and mana excel work together here to accomplish that all the while spitting out threats. I've considered other cards in the deck like Call of the Herd and Smallpox in the sideboard, but this is my current build
With this deck Im kindof aiming for a midrange-ish thing with heavy removal. also im trying to maximize Deathrender, by equipping big threats such as Ohran Viper and Troll Ascetic. If/when they get rid of them, they are instantly replaced with another huge threat such as Mirri the Cursed or Shriekmaw (both having evasion). This is just a basic idea so far, I need help with fine tuning and improvement. Suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've found myself fond of the cmc=3 build, where you drop a mana-producer on the first turn follwed by a 2nd turn Hypnotic Spector or Troll Ascetic. Shriekmaw and Tarmogoyf fit well into that strategy since they will always come down on turn 2.

It puts your opponents on a quick clock with lots of pressure with card-advantage starting right away on turn 2.

Basically a Turn 2 significant threat. Then you just play out The Rack in the mid-game to seal the deal.

I would probably find a way to add Smallpox to the MD. It has synergy with Flagstones of Trokair, Tarmogoyf, Tombstalker, and keeps you ahead of the mana race.

Also it looks like you only have 59 cards in here.
updates:

Added banner, added splash info, and added Gilt-Leaf Ambush to removal list.

:P. Oh no, I'm probably going to cut Glittering Wish out of the maindeck as well. It's just not working to my satisfaction
I am a fan of any deck running Profane Command (seeing as I picked 4 up on Ebay for 11 bucks). I am wondering if anyone has tried the Haakon engine in this deck? I would Imagine it would fit but have as of yet to find out.

On a side note I have made good use out of Colfenor's Plans. Its hard to play with but we are running green so getting rid of it isn't hard to do. Oh and draw 7 for 4 mana isn't bad for control builds.

Also whilst I am rambling on,Shreikmaw in the grave and Command with 7 mana can swing games in your favor.
this may come as a shock but that deck lost to tree folk(mono green even)in FNM last night and here's how its games went all night (i wasn'st playing it).
I say it was a few mistakes the player made while playing it. it lost 2-0 there, also it lost 2-1 against my elf deck (ftw). It beat kithkin aggro 2-0, it beat faerie control 2-1, and it beat teaching faeries 2-0.

I like your builds, but goyf costs $150 a play set so I don't think it's worth it.:D

While it may have some tough match-ups (especially vs a fast aggro deck) The Rock has been a proven staple in Standard for quite a few years (the better part of this century actually).

As far as Tarmogoyf I completely understand your point, however it is a card you want to buy them 1 at a time (unless you get them on the cheap on eBay), or trade for them.

I only need 2 more for my playset. I bought 1 and pulled the other I have so far.

I've found Oona's Prowler is very vulnerable in aggro/burn heavy meta so Augur of Skulls might be best there. Plus the opponet can control how much life they lose before you attack (before your attack phase I discard two cards to give Oona's Prowler -4/-0...). Now if you don't have control of the board this can be bad. Augur of Skulls (outside of a few things) can't be dealt with in the same manner and more often than not nets you two cards.

I'd say at least 1 Liliana Vess. With as much spot removal as you have you should be able to ramp her up to 8 to then sac for complete creature control...which you can then use Garruk Wildspeaker's Overun ability ftw.

4 Smallpox imho may be a little much. You don't want to play that and then not have mana open to swing with Treetop Village.

How has it done for you in testing?
I've learned a lot since States, and since re-launching this thread.

So far this has done well for me in testing. What do you all think?

I underestimated Gilt-Leaf Palace and picked up my playset yesterday. Amazing. Even if I don't have an elf in the opening hand it's still good. Often times I would be sitting there with either 1 away from Troll Ascetic, or needing something to give me . This helps.

I like Troll Ascetic, and would love to throw in Loxodon Warhammer, but to be honest I'm not sure where. This is also another reason why I bumped the Garruk Wildspeaker up to 2 of. The Overun ability is a game winner.

I was thinking about removing the 2 Harmonize for 2 Graveborn Muse as this would give me card draw, and a blocked if an opponent decides to attack a Planeswalker...however that would bump my creature count to 18.

Oh yeah...Gilt-Leaf Ambush is better than most people think. You get 2 surprise blockers, and with a deck (control wise anyway) that runs so few creatures ready to block it can be a great combat trick. Sometimes being able to block with 3 creatures can give you that extra turn you need to win the game. Also while the clash ability reveals a card to your opponent there's a few things to think about here:
-if it's a land card you can put it on the bottom if you have plenty in play (late game we usually do)
-if it wins you the clash you have just delivered a deathtouch block to your opponents creatures keeping that Damnation in hand for when you really need it.

For this I also reduced the number of Shriekmaw to 2. I still like it, but am aiming it more as a late game / post-Damnation creature removal / beater.

I can't wait until the next Standard.
Prowler is good because they discard to prevent damage. You are making them discard effectively for free.
good points on the prowler. most of the situations played out the way you described. they either burned or flat out destroyed it. Come to find out. they had nothing left over for goyf or stalker late game. granted, yeah they can minimize damage by discarding. how many turns can they afford the discard? as for smallpox, i originally had 3. but added the 4th, due to lack of drawing it. playtested a bit last night. unable to play in the FNM. played well last night. alot of aggro last night. beat them all pretty handily. tendrils could find home in main. kinda miss the lifegain. I plan on playing this next week. so, ive got all week to tweak it.

I completely understand that, however some opponents will take the 3 knowing they have an answer coming (or even have it in hand before you attack). Augur of Skulls must be dealt with on the opponent's turn after it comes into play or they are losing 2 cards on my upkeep. This often causes the opponent to use more of their resources (and thus decreasing the number of cards in hand) quicker...if possible that early...than they would normally like to for their deck.

Both are good...really good...it just depends on which one fits for your deck, style of play, and meta.

Heck...I wouldn't even be opposed to have a playset of one MD and the other in the SB. One good thing about Oona's Prowler is you can use her ability to fill the yard to cast Tombstalker off the delve or when popping Liliana Vess.
Here's my Midrange-Controlish Rock list, currently untested, though I've goldfished a couple hands just to see how often I get mana screwed/color screw/mana flooded and the like.

It also helps your turn one Gilt Leaf Palace come into play untapped.

Clash is very underated. Ive only played it in red, but effectivally scrying for one, to avoid lands, and get to more burn has been game saving.

Btw, thats not the version you played against me. Bring that one in, Ive built up a few other decks that you can playtest against.
Here's my t2 version:

Lands (21)
4 Gilt Leaf Palace
4 Llannowar Wastes
3 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth Mainly mana fixing, I could prolly live without em though
1 Desert
4 Swamp
4 Forest

Spells (19)
4 Nameless Inversion Awesome removal/pump for Nath
3 Minion's Murmurs (this card rocked ((pun intended)) in testing)
4 Thoughtseize Nuff said
4 Stupor See above
2 Profane Command Wincon (get a shrieker from earlier)
2 Eyeblight's Ending extra fetchable removal

Critters (20)
4 Llannowar Elves Acceleration, then beats later with perfects
4 Wren's Run Vanquisher Good decent beats
4 Elvish Harbinger Fetch just abouth anything you need
2 Nath of the Gilt Leaf The beasty of the deck, drop early and watch the board fill with elves
3 Imperious Perfect Makes tokens, and then makes em bigger.
3 Shriekmaw truly fab card.

Sideboard
3 Eyes of the Wisent fish/faeries/permission
3 Extirpate permission/ reanimator/threshold/Goyf nerfing
3 Tormod's Crypt flashback/reanimator/threshhold/Goyf nerfing
3 Naturalize
3 Deathmark 1cc "Destroy target Tarmogoyf"
Oona's Prowler is better off in more aggressive builds and Augur of Skulls is probably better off in more controlish builds.

Pretty obvious Oona's Prowler will do more dome damage than card advantage against most competitive players, unless they got random tricks up there sleeves, but that doesn't happen often.

You want Masked Admirers in there. Nix all the other elves if you want, but keep the Admirers. Cut a Minions' Murmurs, cut a Perfect, put in two Masked Admirers.
Anogio: Keep in mind that this isn'y Elves. This is The Rock, a Control deck. Unlike Aggro, we like to keep CA, so if you have a elfy build, run at least four Masked Admirers. If your local judge and players don't happen to pay attention well, run five or six, even (that's a joke.)
Personally, my build runs four Graveborn Muse and four Harmonize for card draw, and I may include a Masked Admirer or two.
Ohran Viper is also good in Aggro variants.

EDIT: Oh yeah, here's me decklist again:

random MD i've been testing with for now.

There are tonne of good 3-drops in the format right now, (hyppie, viper, troll and CotH) so i went with the whole 8 one-drop mana dudes. Warhammer is a card i'm not often a fan of, but really, it's another potential turn 2 play, and your dudes are quite good with ti for the most part (fear, flying, untargetable, or lower power (but good abilities)).

Still not really sure on a sb, but probably have some package of Wall of Roots, some extra removal, and a control suite.
Sorry Erasmus. As much as I hate the fact, Elves of Deep Shadow is not in T2 anymore. Play llanowar elves since you play 7 1GG dudes.

Yes, I looked at the Admirers, they're on my "Must get round to buying" list.

buddhajew92: Looks like I misunderstood what the rock actually is. Not a problem though. I can easily adjust it, though I'll keep the harbingers for fetching purposes. By the way, what is CA?

CA is card advantage. usually called that when you have more cards in your hand than your opponent or more permanents on the board or something.
lol I know what card advantage is, i just didnt know what the abbreviation meant. but thanks
lol. just making sure.:D
Updates coming:

Ok folks I'll be working on this some more over the next few days so here is what's up.

#1: If there are any cards missing let me know (I think Eyes of the Wisent is missing).
#2: I may make a seperate SB card section for ideas what to place there.
#3: Matchups! I haven't played against every decktype. What matchups have you played against and what strategies do you all use? I'll gather that info and post it as well.
#4: Manacost and budget. I've seen this done on other threads and think it's a good idea. Sure it's a lot of coding but it can help others.

That's about it. Thanks for all the input everyone.
