What is "Merfolk!"?
"Merfolk!" is a Blue based aggro or aggro-control deck. It uses the merfolk "lord" creatures (creatures that give merfolk +1/+1) to max out your merfolk power. The finishing blow can be dealt many ways, though it ususally comes through clearing all blockers by tapping with Cryptic Command or running through with islandwalk + tideshaper mystic.

What is "Angelfish"?
Angelfish adds red for burn and Lightning Angel. Angelfish hasn't been proven in any major event but appears to be one of the most promising decks there is.

Angelfish vs Merfolk!
Merfolk tends to deal better in metagames with Sonic Boom, UG Tempo Control and other non wrathing Control decks.

Angelfish on the otherhand, deals better with aggro decks and W and B based control.

Card Choices
Creatures
Show

Lord of Atlantis: The cheaper lord, run 4.
Merrow Reejerey: The more expensive lord, still run 4, he's actually better than Lord of Atlantis.
Tideshaper Mystic: The only 1cc creature you will run, possible to run for run through with islandwalk.
Slivergill Adept: The cantrip merfolk, run 4.
Riptide Pilferer: Jack the Ripper, he's very good but not an auto 4 of.
Fallowsage: Way to high of a cc for it's p/t and effect.
Surgespanner: Same as Fallowsage.
Shapesharer: Can kill legendary critters and copy enemy biggies.
Venser, Shaper Savant: Causes extreme tempo advantage.
Sower of Temptation: Greater Gargadon and Guile are big meanies, take 'em!

Mirror Entity: Incredibly good, but mana intensive, In reality, you won't need to run it.
Veteran of the Depths: Way to high of a cc for it's p/t and effect

Sygg, River Guide: One of the great four merfolk, so auto run 4.

Spells
Show

Wipe Away: It's too expensive but tempo advantage is always good
Aquitect's Will: Can cantrip for 0 with the Reejerey.
Ponder: A new age 1cc draw. Not as good as brainstorm or ancestral recall, though what is?
Familiar's Ruse: You lose way to much tempo to play this.
Ancestral Vision: A very good 1cc drop, gets worse the later the game goes though.
Wings of Velis Vel: Blue's ultimate combat trick.
Delay: A very good counter for aggro as three turns means alot more for aggro.
Rune Snag: For aggro, not the best choice
Cancel: Read above
Psionic Blast: Blue Char, and ultimate reach, run 4.
Cryptic Command: Another awesome combat trick, a potential 1-3 of.

Crib Swap: It leaves a shapeshifter for you to kill, it's not bad nor good.
Mana Tithe: Good only in the first 4 turns.
Oblivion Ring: Another good choice, it can be killed though to be negated.

Z
Bottle Gnomes: Lifegain for heavy burn non-goyf aggro
Phyrexian Ironfoot: Stalls opposing aggro, not a bad SB choice
Academy Ruins: For comboing with Gnomes
Loxodon Warhammer: Another lifegain artifact that can be used against goyf aggro.

Jace Beleren: You draw 3 cards to their 1, a sweet deal.
Unsummon: The cheapest of tempo killers, a decent choice.

Summon the School: A bad choice unless you transform your SB

Teferi's Moat: Actually useful for Power Glove and other one color heavy decks.

Special Thanks To:
Hodoku, for the fantastic post blueprint.
2:25 PM sneakattackkid: my basics are worth more... 5:21 PM Nighthavk_: I was splitting more 8-4s than a hooker splits her legs. 11:42 PM Nighthavk_: because honestly, your opponent may be caw, but he'll probably be a drooling idiot who just found out porn exists.
Whoops, I hit the Submit button

Silly Atma.

Its really hard to determine the match ups and the path to play merfolk, since the variations between decks make a HUGE difference.

For my build aggro is surprisingly an easy match up since I don't have to fear EOT Char and then Main Phase Char while control is often a game one loss and a easy game 2 and game 3 post board wins.

My build goes for a more aggro-control route, though with all the control decks and midrange decks packing big spells like Wrath of God and planewalkers I might need to MB 4 or more counterspells.
I am Blue/Green
I am Blue/Green
Mine is aggro Merfolk

Thoughts?

I'd switch out the Changelings for a Sygg and three Mirror Entities. This in addition to removing an Isolation for a land.

IIRC Merfolk T8'd at Minnesota states, so when we finally update our states decklists (Lazy minnesotan to's. >.>) then there should be another reference list. I think it got 4th or third, maybe even second. I didn't stay for the t8 tho.
Wow, I totally misread, I thought I was upping the lands to 22, not 24, either -1 or -2 to fill in the guides and/or isolation

I'll probably spend some time going through the states decks (again) to find the ones I need to put up in my threads.

I beat this guy first round of top eight. He was half asleep and I really did feel bad playing against him. His deck was very good and fast. Had he turned one of my lands into an island he would have pulled off a win and possibly went on to game 3. My guess is that he got fifth place because he was in first at the end of round 8.

Done changing...how is that? Thoughts?

I would prefer the discard merfolk over the mirror entity. Just personal preference. That merfolk sorcery that turns opponents lands into islands and cantrips is also pretty incredible, especially considering that you can play it for free late game, or even get an extra mana off it due to the reejerey.

Oh rly? I thought he won first round of top 8. I need to check my sources >.>.

Yeah, he was first and Mark Hinz was Second after swiss tho. I remember that.
mine is aggro merfolk but its u/g

sorry for the lack of autocard ill fix it tomorrow

4 Tideshaper Mystic
4 Deeptread Merrow
4 Lord of Atlantis
4 Silvergill Adept
4 Merrow Reejerey
4 Quirion Dryad
3 Mysitc Snake

4 Delay
4 Snapback
4 Strength in Numbers

4 Yavimaya Coast
4 Gemstone Mine
4 Forest
9 Islands
I like fun, but competitive decks. So I might not play what is optimal but they have normally been tested to have a 2/3 winrate.

I guess I don't really see how delay is better than rune snag or even familiar's ruse. Counter target spell, bounce mystic snake/silvergill adept.

I have been posting on another thread till I saw this one. So far this is my deck, Sygg is prolly the MVP. Judge of currents is slow in aggro and Summon the school is not exactly mana efficient because it is a sorcery. Condemn deals with those guys that are just to big to blast away or to block.

Some good plays:

Give Riptide Pilferer protection with Sygg
Free Spells w/Reejerey
i just got my full lorwyn playset of commons and uncommons last night and SrKasimere it looks like your right Ruse will definitely work over delay

Alright, i've noticed everyone is playing a multicolored version of Merfolks. I've taken a different approach by going Mono Blue. Even if a Merfolk deck goes Aggro, there's still controling the field with the Merrow Reejereys. Here's my fun build that does very well depending on the situation.

Against Aggro decks a Race is prefered and Merfolks more often than not come up on top. Their lords are well staggered in mana costs. Turn 2 Lord of Atlantis and Turn 3 Merrow Reejerey.

The Reejerey allows for explosive turns and final blows. I'm looking to Add more Pithing Needles to the Sideboard as well because alot of decks have win conditions involving Activated abilities.

Against Control, Swap out Lord of Atlantis, Ego Erasure, and Fallowsage for Merrow Commerce and Drowner of Secrets. The deck will then blow their deck to the depths of their graveyard. Every control match up I played this way, had no answer for this. The answers got Milled away.

I'm going to test out the deck again tonight at FNM and post results tomorrow or sunday when i get the chance!
i just got my full lorwyn playset of commons and uncommons last night and SrKasimere it looks like your right Ruse will definitely work over delay

This is just a thought, but you might want to try something like Riptide Pilferers over Deeptread Merrows. The Lord already gives things islandwalk, it's just as fast, and it has an added bonus to the hit. Not to mention you have counterspells to save the lord from being removed. It's worth a try. I tend to be a ***** for card advantage so naturally that would be my card of choice

These lists should also hit up the OP. It's nice having a selection of builds to view when observing a new deck archtype

Edit: I noticed that Fallowsage didn't end up anywhere. I happen to really like this card, but it seems to be a bit slow. What are peoples opinions on this card. I would like to try to make a merfolk build with it but I can't seem to fit it into anything popular unless I turn it into some sort of merfolk control deck.

The WV 2nd Place deck had it in the Sideboard in what appears to be a conversion sideboard.
Go Fish!

Adding them now.
Adding them now.

Another thing you could do to add to the coolness of the OP is color coordinate the card choices.
example
Blue cards,white cards,gold cards, etc

Just there to help all the newbs who come in to make a new merfolk deck.
Interesting call in the Illinois deck, running [C]Ancestral Visions[/C] as a 1-drops 5-8.

I hadn't noticed before, but the Alabama build is also mono- main-deck.

But their SBs are very different. 13/15 cards in the Illinois deck's SB are offense-oriented ([C]Jace Beleren[/C] in particular is an intriguing choice), while 15/15 cards in the Alabama deck's SB are defensive and taken as a whole, transformative into a sort of Control deck - they all do the same thing, so he must swap most or all of them in together.

There is another list I saw which did the opposite, it was a Control deck that had a 15-Merfolk transformative sideboard. Placed 5th in Massachusetts:

Is this sort of idea just quirky, or worth pursuing, I wonder?
wow you know in any standard environment but this one Aquitect's Will would be used as kindling for a fire. Just a random observation
I like fun, but competitive decks. So I might not play what is optimal but they have normally been tested to have a 2/3 winrate.

That's actually a pretty sweet idea. I'd like to try that one out. Make people side in crazy amounts of enchantment hate and needle then just have them get unsuspectingly run over.

Yeah, that card actually turns merfolk into fiery little monsters that scream and wail as they unblockably come pouring in mass numbers towards your face.
Ok Im building a merfolk deck, right now it looks to be a more aggro deck.

Need help with board. Im also thinking a controllish type deck as well.
I actually played the utah 8th place deck last Saturday and beat him. (I placed 6th) I actually got paired against him 2nd round of the swiss. I was playing a new-age angelfire wannabe deck. The psionic blasts he played would have wrecked me, but in the end of game 3 with me facing lethal damage, I topdecked a disintegrate with him at 14 life, no cards in hand and me with 15 mana sources. Yeah, talk about lucky. All in all though, I was really impressed with the deck.
You should Main deck Sygg if you are going aggro and running aquitect's will, take out the commerce because you have nothing to abuse it with really. Flying men?

Needed a 1 drop. I like being able to play something each turn.

Tideshaper Mystic much?
What makes Merfolk successful is it's harmonious nature. 6 creatures staring you down isn't nearly as bad as 2 Lord of Atlantis, 2 Merrow Reejerey, a Silvergill Adept, and a tideshaper mystic staring an opponent down. (which is very possible.)

Also your T1 spell should be

Ponder
Tideshaper Mystic
Ancestral Vision
Aquitech's Will (even w/o the cantrip)
Unsummon (on the draw)
Mana Tithe (on the play)

its funny everyones saying theirs is an agro deck like theirs is the first but my deck (2nd place wv) was agro from the start, though my sideboard sucked cause i threw it together the night before from spare lowyrn stuff i had lying around.

Could you recap your match-ups at States? I think a lot of us were (pleasantly) surprised that Merfolk did so well, given that probably not many people were playing them.

6 creatures staring you down isn't a bad thing. It means you're about to get a +5CA from your Dmanation. :P
My friend played Mike Wawszczak's 1st Place - Illinois deck (with a few changes) on saturday and absolutely dominated. That deck is amazing, and voidmage prodigy is the mvp (we added one more too). The deck is incredibly fast and resilient, and is the perfect metagame choice with all the blue-midrange (blink and such) and blue-control running around.
A few other observation on why this (Wawszczak's deck) could be the best deck in standard right now:

1. No mana problems.
2. Great Matchups with the most popular decks (look at GP Krakow...)
3. Wings of velis vel is extremely useful in any situation (counter's most creature targeted burn, taps/untaps with reejery, forces in last points of damage, and is an all-around amazing combat trick).
4. Locks the game down with voidmage prodigy (everything but the lords are wizards!).
5. Has a good deal of draw with adept, visions, and ponder (if you play it)

Disadvantages: This deck is really hard to play, due to the large number of plays and options available every turn. Also, molten disaster hurts a lot. So, if you're expecting lots of skred-red, this might not be the best choice.

I'm ditching the deck I top 8'd tennessee states with (R/U aggro) in favor of this, (though this deck is much harder to play). I'm building another copy right now...;)

Another sidenote: Merfolk Thaumaturgist is a great sidboard option against doran decks.

What's up with no one running Merrow Commerce? It's a merfolk spell to feed your reejeries and gives you free untaps. How bad could it be? Is it just that this deck needs to run as many threats as possible to keep up with the current meta, or is there actually something wrong with this card?
I'm posting here the best Merfolk list I've ever seen, Angelfish. It was designed by Titanium Dragon, but he isn't interested in the deck at all. Yet, it's awesome and definitely deserves a try. BDW with Lightning Angel and Psionic Blast was already played in the past, and this is basically a blue-based BDW.

Angelfish:

22 lands in URW (includes terramorphic)

4 adept
4 lord
4 sygg
4 reejerey
3 angel

4 snag
4 incinerate
4 bolt
4 blast
3 trickery

Tricky, offensive, fast, has a lots of incredible SB options like Ring or Brion, built-in evasion vs Blink or Pickles, and is just good.
