What is / Teachings?
Teachings is a / control deck abusing the tutoring capability of Mystical Teachings to play the most powerful cards in Standard, tutoring for 'silver bullets' at a whim. Some builds also utilize Coalition Relic to fix mana and splash for off-color cards. It originated from the Time Spiral Block Constructed season, culminating in multiple Top 8’s at Grands Prix: Montreal, San Francisco and Firenze. Patrick Chapin, the Innovator, took a /// build to US Nationals 2007, placing third in the Standard portion of the event. Numerous players made Top 8 at US States 2007 with various builds of this deck.

How do you play / Teachings?

Early turns are spent developing mana, dropping Prismatic Lens and Coalition Relic. Most of the game is spent reacting to an opponent’s plays, countering spells with Cryptic Command or destroying creatures while accumulating card advantage via Damnation, Careful Consideration, and Mystical Teachings. Typically, the deck finishes with a recurring Triskelavus, while other builds elect to run Tarmogoyf.

What makes / Teachings different from other control decks?

Coalition Relic allows the deck to ramp up huge mana (one of the deck's original names was 'Turbo Relic'), and deal with things the average / control deck can't – Krosan Grip or Disenchant for artifacts and enchantments, or Detritivore to wreck opposing control decks. Mystical Teachings allows the deck to fetch a 'silver bullet' for every situation, grabbing removal, a counterspell or another Teachings to keep your options open.

Card Choices

Creatures
Show

Shriekmaw: Excellent removal in this deck, dealing with early-game threats like Gaddock Teeg and Tarmogoyf while still destroying late-game threats like Lightning Angel or Aeon Chronicler. Doubles as an evasive beatstick! 3-4 of.
Tarmogoyf: The ‘goyf has been proven effective in this deck, but it comes down to personal choice and budget. It’s a ‘mid-range’ beater or blocker in this deck, because it usually isn’t pumped enough to be relevant until turn four or so.
Shadowmage Infiltrator: Jon Finkel's Invitational card is a powerful source of draw, while doubling as an slow win condition. He's seen success though, so 3-4 of if you choose to use him.
Haakon, Stromgald Scourge This guy is played in order to 'infinitely' recur Nameless Inversion. Or at least as long as you have /[/m - a ople of dek fom ae plaed ell pakn hm a a - of. Haunting Hymn: This is immense at sorcery-speed, great against combo and counter-light control.
Beacon of Immortality: Pat Chapin’s super tech, this stalls against aggro and control. Fun after bumping your life up via Tendrils and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth.
Time Stop: A hard counter, Fog, Time Walk. There's a soft lock with this and Pull from Eternity.

Sorceries
Show

Mind Spring: Similar to Stroke of Genius, but you'll rarely cast this on an opponent (unless maybe you have Jace Beleren out.) Definitely viable in here as a huge late-game boost.
Mind Shatter: An update of Mind Twist, this may be one of the best cards from Morningtide. It's very hateful against combo, but may not fare so well against control or aggro.
Thoughtseize: Super Duress is solid hate against combo and control, but whether it's worth 4 slots is debatable. Definitely an option though.
Profane Command: One of the most powerful cards from the set - a late-game Demonfire, reanimating a finisher, or a massive kill spell. It's been played anywhere from 2 to 4 of, but whether it's good for this deck or not is debatable.
Ponder: Extremely effective in terms of card quality, but not so much as card advantage – it’s just a one-for-one. Best as a 3-4 of, but card advantage wins control the game, not quality. Pat Chapin endorses it though, so make your call.
Gaea’s Blessing: This is outdated tech – recur your best instants, or recur another Gaea’s Blessing to go ‘infinite’. Really too slow for Standard now, but a real star in Block Constructed.
Damnation: Mass removal, this is just card advantage waiting to happen. 4-of, automatically.
Foresee: Koutarou Ootsuka said this was Fact or Fiction at GP: Montreal – it’s certainly card quality, though not card advantage like Careful Consideration. Definitely worth trying out, 2-3 of.

Planeswalkers
Show

Jace Beleren: Much better than anticipated, this bad boy restocks your hand mid-game and, if adequately protected, makes sure you never run out of fuel. 2-3?
Liliana Vess: She was played in several high-placing lists from States, so definitely worth consideration. Your input is appreciated!

Land
Show

River of Tears: Better than Underground River here, and perfect for this deck – on your turn, on theirs. Run 4.
Underground River: A budget alternative to River of Tears? The damage really adds up though.
Terramorphic Expanse: A decent budget alternative to painlands, it thins out your deck and pumps Tarmogoyf, but it's not quite so good anymore.
Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth Superb with Tendrils of Corruption, offers mana-fixing (as if you needed it.) 2 to 3, depending on your meta and whether you run Korlash or not.
Urza’s Factory: Flat-out wins the control mirror and a nice mana outlet. 1 is fine.
Tolaria West: Fix your mana, set up a Tendrils, win games – this does it all. 3 to 4 is a good number, but you could do 2.
Faerie Conclave: An alternative to Urza’s Factory – with evasion! – but they don’t stick quite as nicely.
Mouth of Ronom: An uncounterable answer to Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir. Tutor for with Tolaria West.
Vesuva: Blow up an opposing Academy Ruins, copy a Urza's Factory for the control matchup, the versatility!

Sideboard
Show

Pull from Eternity: Protect yourself from Extirpate, hit Greater Gargadon and Detritivore – this is a really effective tool.
Deathmark: Dead Tarmogoyf! Dead Gaddock Teeg! Cheap and effective.
Ancient Grudge: This would be really excellent in the mirror, this saw a lot of play when this deck was big during Block Constructed season. 1-2 of, depending on your meta?
Spring Cleaning: Another option for artifact enchantment removal - you have a good chance of winning a clash, with the number of high-mana cards in this deck. Unless you're running enchantments though, I can't see a reason to run this before Tempest of Light.
Krosan Grip: Target artifact/enchantment removal, good for that Sacred Mesa standing in your way.
Tempest of Light: Destroy hateful, hateful enchantments. Manabarbs, I'm looking at you.
Dodecapod: A decentmeta call, if TarmoRack is running rampant. Most effective as a 3 or 4 of.

Tested Matchups:

/The Rack
Show

Difficult matchup. Side in 'pods or noths ofc, you may have a chance. Also, they only have 4 Rack, and we have so many ways of killing 'goyf. I'm running 1 Ancient Grudge in side myself.

// Aggro
Show

Can be difficult if you don't draw an early Damnation, otherwise you should be fine.

/Faeries
Show

One of the difficult matchups. Slightly different to the other aggro due to the counter suite, be careful with your Damnations (use Pact backup). Resolving a Teferi against these guys will help a lot.

/Scryb-Force / Mono- Aggro
Show

Separated from the other aggro decks because they have Troll Ascetic, which is particularly nasty. Yes, it dies to Damnation, better hope you draw one. Another reason I'm running Ancient Grudge ([c=Loxodon Warhammer]Warhammer).

// / // / //Blink
Show

A deck that can get card advantage over you fast, and with the Champion mechanic doesn't quite die to Damnation. Targeted spot removal is key here. Teferi can't also be very useful if he hangs around.

/Control
Show

Some run lots of counters and some don't, but both are running WoG and Condemn main, which aren't particularly nasty against us. The only problem is Sacred Mesa. This is why you should have at least 1 Chronicler main, just to give you the edge in this matchup. It may be the person with the Factory wins, although I have seen early Factories that haven't produced a Worker until over ten turns later. I'd say if you have enough draw, like maindeck Jace, you can win this. Just remember, first Teachings fetches Teachings, Flashback fetches command or Pact of Negation, second Teachings fetches Teachings, last 3 Teachings fetches counterspells or any needed spot removal. Teferi is useless!

Mono-Control
Show

Similar Teachings run to / control, except last time I played against MBC I fetched Teferi with second to last Teachings , and Flashbacked for Chronicler. Teferi died the player's next turn, but I suspended Chronicler for 7 and that's why I won the game. Kill the Graveborn Muses.

/Turbo-Fog
Show

Definitely the easiest matchup, even though it still takes a long time to win! Basically, Trisky+Ruins or Hellkite + [c=Grim Harvest=Harvest[/c] = win.

Seems good. I will consider this for my new standard deck. Might you want Thoughtseize though?
You need to fix up the page a bit

look IMAGE(Type the banner in here) Put the thing on the same line.

its kinda messy right now just by looking at it.
to clarify I meant "might you want Thoughtseize main.
Final a deck that I have interest in.
I notice some the decks that ppl were building do not have red..
There are alot of strong red cards.

Ancient Grudge
Detritivore
Sulfur Elemental
Molten Disaster
Disintegrate

Well. I couldn`t find that many... But Detritivore is a huge one..
UnholyCombo is right. There needs to be 4x thoughtseize. That card is a bomb.
i've been running jace over shadowmage infiltraitor in my build, and i gotta say it's not bad, though if there's alot of red in your meta, shadow mage is the way to go, at least maybe a board card.
So for the most part this deck is UB/x control with the use of relic.

1. I think this deck, with a competent pilot, could definitely take Champs. It dominated Block Constructed, and it's got more or less an answer for everything. Of course, the metagame could be extremely unfavorable.
2. I haven't had enough time to test with this, but the deck rarely has mana issues with a full playset of Terramorphic Expanse. Occasionally I have difficulty drawing into a major threat, so it definitely needs to be worked with, maybe 4 Careful Consideration? Bogardan Hellkite has been amazing, though.
3. Draw-go (U/W, U/B, whatever) is going to be a rough matchup against a good player, they'll hit the artifact mana. Detritivore in the board should be effective enough, though. There's really no combo deck in the format right now, but the singleton Pact of Negation might throw a wrench in Endless Walks or whatever. Wild Pair slivers has actually been a bad matchup, if only because a resolved Wild Pair is close to death, pre-board, and Frenetic Sliver is stupid. Aggro should be favorable, with multiple Shriekmaw and Deathmark.
4. This is kind of arbitrary, really, just splash for what's good. Beacon of Immortality is fantastic in here, but don't worry too much about mana, assuming you have 3+ Coalition Relic and enough fixers.
Hello. I created this account just to reply to this thread. I did this beacause it is the best thread I could find on this deck. Also because I am playing this deck and would like to improve it as much as I can before taking it to states.

Anyway here is my list followed by explanations for a few off cards.

4 Coalition Relic
4 Prismatic Lens

1 Teferi, Mage of Zhalfier
1 Bogardan Hellkite
1 Dread
1 Triskelevus
4 Shriekmaw

3 Mystical Teachings
4 Ponder
2 Careful Consideration
4 Damnation
1 Tendril's of Corruption
1 Eye Blight's Ending
1 Slaughter Pact
1 Strangeling Soot
1 Pact of Negation
1 Haunting Hymn

4 River of Tears
4 Underground River
2 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
3 Tolaria West
2 Molten Slagheap
1 Dreadship Reef
2 Urza's Factory
1 Acadamy Ruins
6 Island

Sideboard

4 Bottle Gnomes
3 Detritivore
3 Shadowmage Infiltrator
1 Pull from Eternity
1 Extirpate
1 Tendril's of Corruption
1 Ancient Grudge
1 Krosan Grip

I know this is a fairly standard list. The things I get talked to about most are Dread and Ponder.

Dread: I put this in on a whim and discovered that it is a beast that can't be dealt with very easy. The real thing is that it's usualy a 6/6 fear on turn 4-5 if I draw it. It also makes it hard for my control openents to run me outa threats.

Ponder: Not as bad as I thought Portent would be at sorcery speed. I totaly needed a 1 drop that helped ensure I could deal with fast beats. Early Ponder nets me land or removal when I need it. Although some will say its not card advantage so it sux I belive this deck needs this or telling time and i'd rather pay 1.

I am also aware that I am missing a few things that are common like...

Terramorphic Expanse: I have 7 potential turn 1 plays in west/ponder and don't seem to need the mana fix as the 8 artifacts give me what I need almost always.

Cryptic Command: I know, I know. Basicly I started with 4 and slowly removed them over days of play. This deck was way to 4drop heavy and very vulnerable to Teeg. In addition the Command was only delaying the inevitable in many situations. Its most useful form was dismiss or counter that/bounce your whatever. This was powerful but expensive at 4 and week to what will be the best agro in W/G. I will likely play 1-2 in the end.

Anyway please post any constructive ideas you have and I will continue to read this thread and post what I find out in the next 10 days of testing.

P.S. I miss tron.
I still stand by that MD Thoughtseize is a must for this deck. Anyway, I just had an idea that might just be stupid enough to work. With all those Coalition Relics in there (mana accel FTW), might we be able to have less Venser, Shaper Savants and more Teferi's and incorporate the Pickles Lock. Not as the only/main win con, but just sort of as a side thing. This and Elemental Aggro are the only decks that really interest me.
The thoughtsieze in the MD did occur to me but a few things detered me.
1. 80$ sux
2. When turn 7-8 rolls around and your top deckin these it sux
3. this is more of a i don't wana get combo'd card

that said it is obvious that this is a card you might wana board for the mirror or other contol.

pickles could work out if the meta is largely control. I don't think it will be.

otherwise 3 mana 2/2's suck in the face of modern agro and its crazy crazy creatures.
I will brainstorm more about this deck. Going to test my Pickles version.

I really don't think you need Dread - if you really want another finisher, another Hellkite should be fine. I'm not convinced you need it at all, but I'm not you. Hellkite does Flash...

I sound boring, but I can't say I agree with cutting Terramorphic Expanse, in as many colors as we have it's really excellent. I tried out Ponder and I just didn't like, like you said, it's not really card advantage. Tolaria West is usually something you want to be Transmuting, not dropping. Go for the Expanses.

Deathmark is almost a most-include, with all the Lorwyn hype about G/W, it's a killer.
ok then how bout this

I'll give this land base another try. And the janky grim harvest.
Also the 1 spell burst is pretty good. The deathmarks will be there when I goto states. But atm there is not a big W/g problem where I am at. What I have is a Red Gargadon problem with the whole I don't care if my guys die crature base. Maybe the harvest+gnomes+ruins will pan out.
I moved the detritivore MD because I see alota control.
Grim Harvest... I have tryed that yet.

Grim Harvest + Bottle Gnomes?
Grim Harvest + Sheirkmaw?

Who was tryed this yet? If so.. Is it that nuts?

Pull from Eternity is your Gargadon counter. As for the creatures, that's just going to be sort of awkward.
Here is the list I have been working with. It has been pretty solid in testing and I really love the new direction that Teachings is taking from the previous Standard to the new.

Lands: 25
1 Dreadship Reef
1 Tolaria West
1 Urza's Factory
1 Mouth of Ronom
1 Snow-Covered Plains
2 Vivid Creek
2 Terramorphic Expanse
3 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
3 Snow-Covered Swamp
4 River of Tears
6 Snow-Covered Island

Creatures: 6
1 Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir
1 Ancestor's Chosen
4 Shriekmaw

Spells: 28
1 Mindstone
3 Coalition Relic
3 Prismatic Lens
2 Grim Harvest
2 Careful Consideration
3 Foresee
3 Mystical Teachings
1 Slaughter Pact
1 Pact of Negation
1 Nameless Inversion
1 Cryptic Command
1 Tendrils of Corruption
3 Oblivion Ring
4 Damnation

So it looks kind of weird, right? I like the way it plays so far, and Ancestor's Chosen seems to be much better in the deck vs. both Aggro and Control than Triskelavus, especially when coupled with the already in place Grim Harvest engine. The Oblivion Rings are catch-alls for Planeswalkers, opposing Relics, and Creatures alike. The deck has tons of draw power and removal, almost completely lacking counterspells save a single Pact of Negation. For the new format that seems to be the correct route to take.

Thoughts?
I think as of right now there are only 2 counters that matter..
PoN and remove soul. (Maybe Cryptic Commands.. I really like that card) I know I know it sounds stupid. But I might be right for once. ;)
I like Cryptic Command, and it is definitely worth testing in here. Remove Soul seems "meh" to me right now, as I believe the removal we have access to is better than any counter suite we could come up with.

This is where I am at now.
I cut strangeling soot for another pact. Also cut whispers for command.
And added a second pull from eternity to the board.
This plays very nicely now. I can beat r/g gargagoyphf now and after board its realy good. The pre board game vs. heavy burn is scary with this deck thats why I added the lone spell burst. It can keep you from being burned out pretty easily.
Done testing pickles version.

Tested against:

R/B goblins: 4-2 - They are fast, but if you can survive the initial rush they're dead
MBA: 4-2 - Even though I had the same record, this is harder than golbins. Similar strategy, just look out for discard and consume spirit (if they run it)
MB Rack: 3-3: This was the hardest matchup by far. They can rip your hand to shreds and kill you quite effectively with The Rack. Basically a matter of how much discard they get vs. Pickles lock
Mono Black Control: 5-1: Easier that other Mono Black matchups. All their Tendrils and other removal are fairly useless. It's slow but easy if you just keep a cool head.
Dralnu: 4-2: This is probably the hardest control matchup. The only reason I did as well as I did was that one of the players were sub-par. Another one I won was luck. It is especially hard if they know to counter your silver bullets and not your fetch/tutors >.<. If you expect a lot of draw-go, do not play Coalition Control.
Rule of One: 5-1: Fairly easy, despite what you may think. It is actually relativly easy to play around RoL.
Changeling Zoo: 6-0: Too easy. They are basically helpless. This really sort of plays itself out.
G/W: 5-1: Goyf and Gaddock Teeg can be annoying, but get rid of them via Thoughtseize (knew it was a good idea MD :D) and removal and after that you basically auto-win. The game I lost was due to a Gaddock Teeg and I just never got an answer.
Elemental Aggro (R/b): 4-2: This was hard (for aggro) because this deck is good at recovering post-Damnation. They also run a full package of Thoughtseize, which can really hurt.
UnholyCombo - List please. :P
He's been working well. I like one MD and one SB. It was originally suggested to use 3 but I didn't do this for two reasons

A. I needed room for Pickles
B. 3 felt like too much

Latest Sideboard

1 Tormod's Crypt
2 Disenchant
1 Haunting Hymn
1 Tendrils of Corruption
1 Venser, Shaper Savant
3 Oblivion Ring
3 Eyes of the Wisent
3 Remove Soul

This feels like the best sideboard so far.

I'm beginning to think this may be the deck for the format

What I've found is that most of the little combos in this deck (Gaea's Blessing + Time Stop, for example) don't work particularly well. Shriekmaw and Grim Harvest may be an exception, as it's as much removal as you need against non-black decks. I also forgot Tendrils of Corruption and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, but that one is just so ridiculous. I haven't tested Pickles in here yet though, so I don't know.

Teferi has not been showing up for me. Usually I end up Teaching for Bogardan Hellkite, which has been an all-star. This deck occasionally has issues with tempo towards the mid-game, if we're dry on tutors or draw. I'm not quite sure how to fix this, but I'm considering Jace Beleren. I hate $10 cards.

A suggestion for your sideboard: Disenchant should be Krosan Grip, if you're expecting that much draw-go. 3 Eyes of the Wisent seems like the right number, I guess. What is the Tormod's Crypt for? Dredge isn't showing up to States, and I can't think of anything else.
Updated Sideboard

2 Krosan Grip
1 Haunting Hymn
3 Thoughtseize
3 Oblivion Ring
3 Eyes of the Wisent
3 Remove Soul

MD changes

+1 Tendrils of Corruption
+2 Cryptic Command

Tthe Crypt had a good reason, but not good enough. Forget about it.

Eyes of the Wisent isn't just for Draw-Go though.

You see, I am anticipating Draw-Go, but also a RoO and a little deck called Faeries...

going to test against Faeries now :D

You should cut the Remove Soul to bump up those other 3-ofs to 4-ofs. You wreck aggro as it is. Additionally, strongly, strongly consider Detritivore as it makes certain decks crap their pants (draw-go, Coalition Control, anything with stuff that costs more than 4.)

Looks like something straight outta Time Spiral Block. Your land base needs work, for one, River of Tears > Underground River. Molten Slagheap should be Dreadship Reef, you don't use red too much. Urborg, yes? 2-3. Void isn't as useful anymore, probably cut for some more utility.

Just on thing: this will be into Decks To Beat soon, oh so soon.
i like the looks of this deck.
i have a deck i'd like some advice on if you could. it's not a coalition control deck, but it is a control deck that uses coalition relic. i got no responses anywhere else so i'm hoping you guys can help.

it's basically a white control deck with a splashes. alot of the cards in the deck are reusable (story circle, planeswalkers, beacon of destruction, hoofprints). that's what i think can make it powerful. well here is the deck and sb (no testing yet, cards havn't arrived yet)

4 martyr of sands
4 aeon chronicler
3 ajani, goldmane
2 chandra nalaar

4 porphyry nodes
4 dawn charm
3 wrath of god
3 story circle
2 beacon of destruction

3 tormod's crypt -----------------haakon and such
4 oblivion ring --------------------versatility/enchantment hate
Hi everyone i've got news. Just played 5 rounds in a saturday mornin STD with lorwyn. I won! I swept all 5 matches.

this was my list.

4 Coalition Relic
4 Prismatic Lens

1 Teferi, Mage of Zhalfier
1 Arcanis, the Omnipotent
1 Bogarden Hellkite
1 Triskelevus
4 Shriekmaw

4 Damnation
3 Mystical Teachings
1 Careful Consideration
1 Grim Harvest
1 Slaughter Pact
1 Strangeling Soot
1 Eye-Blights Ending
1 Sudden Death
1 Nameless Inversion
1 Tendril's of Corruption
1 Spell Burst
1 Pact of Negation
1 Haunting Hymn
1 Cryptic Command

4 River of Tears
4 Underground River
1 Urza's Factory
1 Acadamy Ruins
1 Molten Slagheap
1 Dreadship Reef
2 Tolaria West
2 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
3 Terramorphic Expanse
3 Island
1 Swamp
1 Mountain
1 Plains

Side

4 Deathmark
4 Bottle Gnomes
3 Detritivore
1 Ancient Grudge
1 Disenchant
1 Pull from Eternity
1 Extirpate

I had no major problems like this.

I faced a greatorgoyphf deck, a solid red burn deck, mono green agro, b/r goblins and white weenie. This deck smacks creature based strategy like its just doing its job. And it is.

Acadamy ruins and bottle gnomes with grim harvest thrown in is the bomb vs burn and easy to setup.

Mono green has only one chance and thats Troll Asctetic.

Arcanis is crazy with all the mana generated. Block draw 3 return to hand redrop.(with Teferi).

Anyway I recomend trying this.

Oh, I know. This deck - so good. You should get off Martyr and play with us for a while.

This looks like it belongs in the Proclamation thread, or U/W. Anyways.

Hoofprints of the Stag isn't very good against control, it's better against aggro. Sacred Mesa owns control - they have to draw into mass removal or things like Crovax, Ascendant Hero. With Hoofprints, it's much easier to deal with on a step-by-step basis - Slaughter Pact, go.

It looks like you're going U/R/W - instead of Chandra, I'm going to say Jace Beleren. Friggin' ridiculous. Additionally, test with Lightning Angel and see if it works mana-wise. Blocks for Jace, swings, just all kinds of amazing.
For anyone who might be curious, this is my current list.

I like this build. I expect faeries, so what do you suggest (in the SB) taking out for Eyes of the Wisent? Should I? I also take it we are keeping the Dreadship Reef idea? I need a deck for a tourney next Sunday and I think this wil be it.
In protest that I made this thread already, with no posts, yet this one is popular, I post that thread here.
