Thread concept: Reversal of Build-a-City: Destroy a city!

Thread concept: instead of the rise of a city on virgin lands, what about a thread that starts with a thriving metropolis, and it gets repeatedly sacked, subjected to civil wars, famines, earthquakes, etc, until it is a collecton of ruins, possibly depopulated entirely, or possibly inhabited by a small agrarian village crouched among the ruins.

It isn't a continuous string of disaster, necessarily. It could be that, for instance, the city goes through a decade of horror in which local gangs are the only authority, foreign slavers cart off hundreds of inhabitants every day bought for a few silvers from local gangsters, etc. Then a new, competent military dictator takes over, reestablishes order, and restores prosperity and growth to the city for the next two decades (although the city never achieves its former glory), and most people think that the city's "time of troubles" is over -- until the city gets sacked by gnolls two decades later. There is a sporadic, irregular pattern of crisis and recovery, which, over the course of a few centuries (or perhaps a millenium) forms a trendline of a continuous decline once the bumps are smoothed out.

Thoughts? Naturally, a brief bit of "build-a-city" would be necessary first, but it would not be chronological: it would just be suggestions of history, institutions, etc. In terms of chronology, the "build-a-city" thread occurred hundreds of years ago. The chronological thread starts with the city as a bustling metropolis of maybe 200,000 people (a port city? An imperial capital? Both?).

Ideas?
Insert obligatory reference to Locate City "nuke".

The thing would work the best if at first there was a map of the city and small paragraph of description of the city. Then the destruction itself would be more vivid. Maybe for the first month there would be suggestions on what different catastrophes or other destructive actions there might arise (mundane war, godly vengeance etc) and there would be a vote or poll regarding what is the main engine of destruction. Then people would start writing chronicles and journal entries on how the destruction advances. How some people settle to basements, how city guard mans the fortifications and how the (evident) destruction desolates the city. It would be of survival and maybe without big or great characters as too great characters might try to rebuild the city - I'm guessing we just want survival in miserable conditions in this case. We could even use the city of Saltmarsh or what was described in DMG2 unless CoC prevents us.

And possible sources of destruction:
Firstly undetectable Tsochar (Lords of Madness) infestation infiltrate most of the city administration and high ranking guard officials which leads to destruction by neglection of vital city services. After the infestation becomes well-known, Tsochars's (natural) enemy (race/monster X) starts attacking the city where normal, uninfested townsfolk just try to survive the struggle.
This is certainly a very interesting thread idea and could potentially work very well but i see a potential problem that must first be overcome.

To get the most out of this we would need an already established city with a good mix of NPCs and also history to the city as well a map/city description. This means either using a city from a BACT, using a published city, or doing a streamlined and quick-fire version of a BACT in order to have something to destroy. NPCs arent as big an issue as long as we have all the main ones in place then we can add new ones as we go.

Thoughts?

I Agree. we would definatly need some kind of description of the city, even if it is only "the city of Doomsville has 100,000 inhabitants, 2,000 daily commuters into the city, and is ruled by an evil king who likes nothing more than to see his subjects suffer."

I suggest an empire/republic founded by 3 powerful wizards of different alignments. Now these wizards were no fools so they designed the most stable government possible. To aid their new land they also invested the most powerful of magics.

What even these powerful minds couldn't comprehend was the decay a great nation with no challenge can have. We could start after the nation has conquered its entire world/plane. Then everything gets worse as they enjoy a short "golden age". Then things start falling apart/being shut down as there is little need for them in this new age of plenty. Next are the rebellions, and slowly this mighty power reverses its path till it is but oblivion.
