New 3.5 Psionics FAQ

People frequently come to this forum with questions in psionics. This FAQ is designed to contain the most frequent of those questions (naturally) in an easily-readable format. It is also a living document -- as other questions become more common, they will be added here as well.

Dr. Draco, the maintainer of the original 3.0 FAQ and the initial 3.5 FAQ, has apparently retired from the Wizards forums, hence I am stepping up to this mantle.

SYSTEM REFERENCE DOCUMENT 3.5
The SRD contains nearly all of the rules present in the XPH in raw mechanical form. Intended for developers, it can be an invaluable resource for a player or DM away from their books.
More viewer-friendly mirrors are available. The most popular two are The Hypertext d20 SRD and Sovelior/Sage SRD. Most such mirrors contain effective, comprehensive hyperlinks and additional tools (such as a search feature).
One advantage to the SRD over the books: they always apply the errata to their text.

NEW DM/PLAYER'S GUIDE TO PSIONICS
An excellent resource for players eager to crash-course the system, and for DMs who have a player who wants to run a psionic character but you've never read the book. Think of it as a composite of Psionics For Dummies on the boards.
This thread is in the Master Index, but is so useful that it bears mentioning more than once.

THE MIND'S EYE
A monthly column published by Mark Jindra of Wizards (WotC_Mark) and freelance Scott Brocius to support psionics, this column had a brief time based around incorporating psionic content and support into new books. Recently returned to its full glory with a few articles written by Mark and 'Dark Psion'. The archives provide many of the board's favorite PrCs and powers. Any article after "Out with the Old, In with the New" is 3.5 compliant.
Commonly cited articles include the Constructor, Sangehirn, Psychic Rogue (base class), Meditant, Psychic Weapon Master, Psychic Theurge, Body Leech, and Soul Manifester. There's more than that in just those pages, and far more in the Mind's Eye itself, so what are you doing still reading this? Dig into the Mind's Eye already!

MYTH: THE XPH IS OVERPOWERED and MYTH PART II
Extensively debated and playtested, the XPH remains an amazingly well-balanced book if one follows the rules. If you are reading this FAQ trying to understand the power level of the XPH, chances are any questions you could have had are in these two threads. (Note that these threads are about the Expanded Psionics Handbook on its own, not factoring in powers and classes from expanded sources.)
This link is in the Master Index, but is so useful that it bears mentioning more than once.

Open to suggestions on additional useful links.

Questions that do not relate directly to one of the other categories will go here.

Introduction and Books

Q: I'm interested in getting into psionics. Which books do I need?
A: Beyond the books you probably already have, just the Expanded Psionics Handbook, if that.
Psionics are also free for everyone in the System Reference Document (see above), albiet stripped of any flavor text, art, and Wizards of the Coast intellectual property. More information on the SRD follows.

Q: Wait, so the Expanded Psionics Handbook is a standalone book, and not an expansion to the Psionics Handbook?
A: That's correct. The Psionics Handbook is from 3.0, and is no longer supported. The Expanded Psionics Handbook, despite the name, is a standalone system that replaces the 3.0 system. 3.5 psionics differs from 3.0 psionics far more than current edition magic differs from AD&D 2e magic. The consensus on these boards is that the changes were for the better.

Q: So you're telling me it's free?
A: Yes, it is... sorta. The System Reference Document mentioned above is a collection of rules that Wizards has released under the Open Game Licence for game developers to use to write their own books. For more information on the SRD itself, please visit the site linked above.
For psionics users, this means that 90% of the rules in the Expanded Psionics Handbook are available in the SRD for anyone to reference at any time. No flavor text or artwork is included; it's raw rules text.
However, not every rule present in the XPH appears in the SRD:
MISSING: The Githyanki, Githzerai, and Thri-kreen races are all Wizards of the Coast intellectual property. Illithids and Yuan-ti are also Wizards intellectual property, and as such the Psionic Illithid and Psionic Yuan-ti monster entries are also absent.

ALTERED: Fist of Zuoken becomes Psionic Fist (not to be confused with the feat of the same name), and Illithid Slayer becomes Slayer to avoid conflict with Wizards of the Coast intellectual property.

It should be noted that the Slayer is different mechanically from the Illithid Slayer, and the general consensus is that it is stronger in the SRD alone.

Q: Complete Psionic's also out. Is this a must-have?
A: This is a highly disputed question. There's some parts of the book which are pretty good. There's many parts that aren't. It certainly isn't up to par with the other Complete series in terms of quality *or* quantity, but it can be worthwhile. Definitely browse it before you decide to buy on an impulse.

Q: Did anything change in Complete Psionics that I should know about?
A: There were three major areas of clarification, and five powers were altered (in what appears to be paid-for, yet non-universal, errata).
What was changed:
CLARIFICATIONS:
1) DR now applies to metacreativity powers that deal damage described as slashing, piercing, or bludgeoning.
2) Manifesting a power from a stone using your own points flushes the stone.
3) Charging a soulknife's twin-shortsword mind blade with Psychic Strike requires a separate action for each blade.
ALTERATIONS:
1) Astral Construct: Only one construct may be in existence at a time.
2) Dimension Door: Additional augments added, including two negative-cost augments for diminished effect.
3) Empathic Transfer, Hostile: Complete rewrite. Similar (but far weaker) effect and a definitive ruling on the multiple-target augment.
4) Energy Missile: DC scales as other energy powers.
5) Energy Stun: See Energy Missile.
Several of these changes were seen as unnecessary and unjustified (in particular the Astral Construct modification), while others were welcomed (in particular the Soulknife clarification and Dimension Door). However, as these rules are in Complete Psionic instead of an official errata, they are not considered as 'essential' to your game. Several DMs ignore some or all of these changes; speak to your DM about which ones are in use.
It should be noted that the CPsi sidebar on metacreativity and damage reduction directly contradicts not only all the rules on magic, but also the official 3.5 psionics FAQ from the Sage.

Q: So, other than Complete Psionics, what other books should a prospective psionics fan consider getting?
A: Well, you can check the Index of Psionic Content Outside the XPH if you wish. However, the one-stop solution that most people on this board recommend is Hyperconscious: Explorations in Psionics, also by Bruce Cordell. I won't clutter the FAQ with comments on this book; suffice it to say that it is a very popular title that gets a lot of use around here.
Although I am no doubt biased in saying so (as I was its primary author), the book Untapped Potential: New Horizons in Psionics also provides expanded psionics rules and options. It's relatively new, but growing in popularity.

Hyperconscious is 160 pages (although a pared-down 64-page version is available), on par with a Complete book, while Untapped Potential is closer to 200. Both books are (almost completely) Open Game to boot. You can find PDFs or hard copies of them on the links above.

General Overview

Q: I'm leery about adding psionics to my game. The last time anyone tried this, a first-level psion just cut right through everyone else's defenses like butter, and no one could break his. What's up with that?
A: You were in all likelyhood using a variant rule ("Psionics Is Different"). The default rule, Psionics-Magic Transparency, states that spells and powers are identical. Any effect that could affect magic affects psionics, and vice versa. Thus, your first-level psion would have still needed to break through spell resistance and magical buffs, and his own buffs are as subject to Dispel Magic or antimagic as the next wizard's. As to his own irresistable defenses, you likely gave him the same defensive gear anyone else had (the kind effective against magic), while not using any psionic monsters (which would have cut right through those), right? Gah, so much to keep track of!

It's for these reasons that the board's consensus on this issue is: Use psionics-magic transparency, unless you want a headache. If this seems alien to you, note that by the rules, arcane and divine magic are already 100% transparent -- even more so than magic and psionics under full transparency (because unlike psionics, arcane and divine magic use the same skills and feats).

Q: I see a few references to talents (0-level powers), psionic combat (and psionic combat modes), Resculpt Mind, power chains, the Soulknife prestige class (isn't it a base class?), primary disciplines, multi-ability dependency (MAD), and a few other things along those lines. What gives?
A: All of the above are relics of the old 3.0 psionic system, which was simultaneously underpowered and overpowered at the same time (don't ask me how they managed it; they did). Of these, the only things that are usually missed are the Soulknife prestige class and psionic combat, the former for good mechanics and feel, and the latter for flavor (though it died due to the worst mechanics ever seen in Third Edition). All of these are available for viewing (for posterity) in the 3.0 SRD.

If you wish to keep the feel of psionic combat without implementing horrid mechanics, Hyperconscious (mentioned above) implements a very popular, streamlined system that amounts to no more than one additional opposed roll every round. In addition to retaining the minds-clashing-against-each-other feel, it drips with its own flavor. This system is called the Mindscapes system.

Cancer prognosis: I am now cancer-free.

Elan
Q: What's this I hear about Elan being immortal?
A: Check the errata -- elan have no maximum age.

Q: Is an elan limited by his manifester level for the number of points he can spend on Resistance in one round?
A: It's a supernatural ability; that limit only applies to manifesting powers (thus, no limit). Besides, consider an elan in a nonmanifesting class (fighter, wizard, soulknife, incarnate, you name it). They have a manifester level of 0. If it were limited by ML, they wouldn't be able to use *any* of their abilities!
It should be noted that Resistance is 250% less efficient than vigor, is only effective against one attack, and it has a powerful opportunity cost. Don't worry about using it -- if an elan survives due to this ability, congratulations! His racial abilities worked, and he feels a bit of pride in being an elan (much like an elf who finds a secret door when not a rogue, or a dwarf who's stonecunning saves the day).

Half-Giant
Q: A half-giant soulknife manifests his mind blade. Is it a medium blade or a large one?
A: The official answer is "medium" -- he's Medium, not Large, despite Powerful Build. Some DMs have tested it the other way, and not found it unbalancing (as the soulknife is widely held to be a weak class and the half-giant has a level adjustment), but such responses are nonetheless houserules.

Q: Can half-giants qualify as Large for things like War Hulk or Hulking Hurler?
A: They are Medium-sized creatures, so no. There are a few exceptions (mostly specific feats in Races of Stone designed for goliaths), but these will explicitly say that Powerful Build meets the requirements.

Q: I have a half-giant with the Monkey Grip feat...
A: No, sorry, Powerful Build and Monkey Grip provide the same benefit. They don't stack. Trade in the Huge greatsword for a Large one. (They would stack if Monkey Grip said "you may treat yourself as one size larger for the purposes of weilding weapons" or something similar. However, it doesn't, so they don't.)

Thri-kreen
Q: The thri-kreen seems to have a few psi-like abilities that aren't in the XPH. I know this can happen (like the duergar's invisibility), but here they explicitly call out "psionic displacement".
A: Remember that errata file I keep mentioning? Yes, this, too, is answered there. "Psionic displacement" is meant to be greater concealing amorpha and "know direction" is know direction and location. You probably figured that last part out on your own, though.

There are other thri-kreen questions I figure I should throw here, but I'll edit them in when I get some more time.

Cancer prognosis: I am now cancer-free.

Psion
Q: What powers can I select for my psion? I've got 36 to choose from, but there aren't that many in my discipline...
A: That's because you've got an entire general list to pick from. Quoting from the New DM/Player's Guide:
* Egoists can take any power off the Psion/Wilder list, plus any power off of the Egoist (Psychometabolism) list.
* Nomads can take any power off the Psion/Wilder list, plus any power off of the Nomad (Psychoportation) list.
* Kineticists can take any power off the Psion/Wilder list, plus any power off of the Kineticist (Psychokinesis) list.
* Shapers can take any power off the Psion/Wilder list, plus any power off of the Shaper (Metacreativity) list.
* Seers can take any power off the Psion/Wilder list, plus any power off of the Seer (Clairsentience) list.
* Telepaths can take any power off the Psion/Wilder list, plus any power off of the Telepath (Telepathy) list.

Note how your character can pick powers of any discipline, so long as they don't appear on a restricted discipline list (that is, a Telepath can learn Psychometabolism powers that aren't on the Egoist list, such as Body Adjustment).

Q: I'm really confused about disciplines now...
A: There are two meanings of the word in the XPH: the first is an equivalent to "school of magic" and the second refers to one of the six restricted lists of powers and the corresponding psion type.
Unofficially, some members of this board have adopted the term "devotion" to describe the latter (that is, "many Metacreativity powers appear on the Shaper devotion list"). This practice isn't widespread off these boards, but helps to keep things straight.

Soulknife
Q:
What's up with the Soulknife's base attack bonus? And how many skill points does he get?
A: Check the errata; these are both fixed there. The base attack should progress like a rogue (though columns were dropped in printing) and he has 4 skill points per level.

Q: Does a soulknife have to reshape his blade every time he creates it?
A: No, he doesn't. Each time you shape your blade, it remains in that form until you shape it again. According to the Official FAQ, though, you do. No rules exist either way (except the ones the Sage made up in that FAQ), but implications suggest that you don't.

Q: When I split my mind blade, what happens to the special abilities?
A: As only the enhancement bonus itself is reduced, there's absolutely no change in the special abilities. Even if it falls to a net +0 enhancement bonus -- it's not a crafted weapon, so it's not subject to that rule.

Q: Psychic Strike + Twin shortsword mind blade = ?
A: This was addressed in Complete Psionic; each blade is charged and discharged separately.

Q: Psychic Strike + Bladewind = ?
A: Wow, you like your equations. Anyway, there's two schools of thought for this.
1) The official FAQ, which says it applies to one attack. Support: Psychic Strike says it deals damage only once. Counter: That FAQ plain made up rules in other cases (notably Extra Spell), and claims that it's clear.
2) The common method, which says it applies to every attack. Support: Bladewind says each blade is identical to your mind blade in every way, and Whirlwind is a weak ability anyway (and many people find the soulknife weak to begin with, especially one with this many levels in it). Counter: See 'support' in 1.
I recommend 2, but I admit I'm biased in this issue.

Ardent
Q: What, exactly, is an ardent's maximum power level known?
A: Ardents can learn any power that they could pay for. Thus, a 5th level ardent could learn any power that costs 5pp or less -- effectively, any 3rd level power or lower -- provided it appears on one of his chosen mantles. Note that unlike every other class, Practiced Manifester actually increases what powers an ardent can learn.

Q: What's an ardent's power list for the purposes of psionic items? Since, say, Astral Construct appears on the Creation mantle, can I use the Psicrown of the Astral Legion (which has Astral Construct on it)?
A: An ardent has no true "class power list". Instead, each individual ardent has a power list comprising only of the powers on the mantles he has chosen. Thus, your ardent could use the Psicrown of the Astral Legion (say) only if he had access to the Creation mantle (even if he didn't know the power itself). If he doesn't have the mantle, he can't use the power. Note that the Expanded Knowledge feat can grant you the use of a single specific power -- in the case of Astral Construct, if you had EK:Astral Construct, you could use that psicrown, even if you didn't have the Creation mantle.
It's debatable whether or not the Tap Mantle feat enables you to expand your true power list, as it doesn't say it does (although its effect is functionally identical). This seems very much like one of the many editing errors in Complete Psionic, so make of it what you will (personally, I say it works).

Erudite (variant psion)
Q: I don't understand the erudite's manifesting at all... what are "unique powers"?
A: Basically, an erudite can know any number of powers, and have them all available at the start of any given day. However, every time he manifests one of them, he gives up some flexibility.
Here's a full example that might help.
Erasmus is a third-level erudite who knows about a dozen powers, but only has two unique powers per day. He opens up his first encounter by manifesting Entangling Ectoplasm, which counts as his first unique power for that day. He has one unique power remaining, and should he decide to manifest on his next turn, he could manifest Entangling Ectoplasm, or any of the other dozen-some-odd powers that he knows.

However, let's say he manifests Energy Push. This is a second unique power for the day -- he's now out of unique powers. For the remainder of the day, he can only manifest Entangling Ectoplasm and Energy Push, as those were his two unique powers for the day.

Essentially, Erasmus is a psion who knows many more powers than fellow psions, but can only manifest as many *different* powers each day as a wilder, chosen on the fly.
I should note here that erudites should seriously consider the Imprint Stone feat, as powers manifest from sources OTHER than his own power points don't count against his unique powers per day. Thus, it's considered wise for erudites to create vast quantities of power stones for utility powers that won't see much repeated use each day, saving unique powers for situations where your bag full of power stones won't help you.

Q: I get the impression there's more than one erudite from some of these posts...
A: ...And that's sort of correct. Back in an early Dragon magazine (318, I believe), they previewed elements of the then-unreleased XPH. Some of these previewed elements didn't make it in the book at all, including the synad and the erudite, both of which were published in Complete Psionic. The original version of the erudite was different from the Complete Psionic version -- it had a table of unique powers per level per day that looked identical to a wizard's spells per day table, for a start -- and was widely considered overpowered. The version in Complete Psionic suffers no such stigma.

Multiclass Psionic Manifesters

These questions will all use the example from the New DM/Player's Guide, an elan Psion (Egoist) 5 / Psychic Warrior 2 with Intelligence 15, Wisom 13, and two Psionic Talent feats named Torrigan.

Q: What's my manifester level as a multiclass character?
A: A good question, but there's a problem with it -- you don't have just *one* manifester level. You have one for each class, equal to your level in that class.
Torrigan, for instance, has a manifester level of 5 as an Egoist, and a manifester level of 2 as a Psychic Warrior.
These limit your power points spent on powers learned from each class. When writing powers down on your character sheet, note which class you levelled up in when you learned them -- that will determine what ML you use them at, which includes how many points you can spend on the power as normal.

For the record, things like Overchannel and Wild Surge can operate on any manifester level you have, except those of your psi-like abilities (if any). So, if Torrigan had Overchannel, he could increase either manifester level using that feat.

Q: So, calculating total power points...
A: Here it is, step-by-step, for our friend Torrigan. Similar steps can be done for you.
Classes:
Psion 5 provides 25 power points. He gets 5 bonus power points for a high Intelligence (Int mod * Psion ML * 1/2).
Psychic Warrior 2 provides 1 base power point, +1 power point due to his Wisdom score (again, Wis mod * Psywar ML * 1/2).
Race: Elan are naturally psionic, gaining 2 bonus power points.
Feats: Psionic Talent adds 2 the first time, and 3 the second time, for a total of 5 more.
TOTAL: 39 power points.

For your own character, you do this the same way.

Q: Wait, the Prestige Class section says you only get power points from your highest class...
A: ...which directly contradicts not only the primary rules on the subject, but also every example from existing sources (such as the CPsi NPCs). Go with the primary rules in case of a contradiction.

It should be noted that this is likely a holdover from revision, similar to the reference of psicrystals being class features in the prestige class section. In both cases, they are contradicted (and thus superceded) by the primary rules sources on their respective areas.

Skills
Q: What's the correct DC for Resist Death on Autohypnosis?
A: Check the errata. Unlike the usual "text trumps table" rule of thumb, here the table is correct at DC 20.

Psionic Focus
Q: Do I need to be psionically focused to use my powers?
A: No, you don't. A psionic manifester could go his entire life and never psionically focus himself. Psionic focus, on its own, does NOTHING, and expending it, on its own, has exactly ONE use: 'taking 15' on a Concentration check (treat the die as if it rolled a 15). Focus is only useful if you have a feat or class feature that operates on it, and said feat or class feature will describe how focus interacts with it.

Q: Say I have the Deep Impact feat and the Greater Psionic Weapon feat. Two questions: First, if I expend my focus, do I get a touch attack with +4d6 damage? Second: If I expend my focus, does this affect all my attacks?
A: No on both counts. You expend your focus to affect one attack with one feat that requires you to expend your psionic focus. So, you choose which attack to expend on, and, when you expend, you decide which feat to activate.

Q: And what if I expend my focus on the first feat, refocus, expend on the second feat, and THEN attack? Do I get my super-attack then?
A: No. In fact, you can't even do this. Expending your focus is never an action unto itself, it's the cost associated with another action. If you attack, you decide at that point whether to expend your focus and which feat to power with it. You can't interrupt the attack with a move action to refocus (this includes if you take the move action with the Hustle power, by the way, since the Hustle power grants you a move action; it doesn't say you take an extra move action as a swift action).

On a side note, though, do note that these feats affect single attack or damage rolls. This means you *could* apply Fell Shot to every arrow you launch with Manyshot, since all of them use the same attack roll (but not Greater Manyshot, since each arrow uses a separate attack roll). However, in that example, you could *not* apply Greater Psionic Shot to each arrow, as each is a separate damage roll.

Q: So, it seems like I have to be be able to expend my focus more than once to use more than one expend feat at a time. How do I do this?
A: If you're willing to spend two other feats, the Psicrystal Affinity and Psicrystal Containment feats will let you focus your psicrystal, which allows you to use two expend-focus feats in the same action (or in the same round if you want). However, if you are unfocused and your psicrystal's focused, you don't get the benefit of your maintain-focus feats (as you are not focused).
There's also the Epic feat Epic Psionic Focus which lets you power two feats with one focus.
Finally, the Psychic Weapon Master PrC in the Mind's Eye gains a late-level ability to store a psionic focus in his crystalline bonded weapon, which is functionally similar to Psicrystal Containment, and operates under the same conditions above regarding maintain-focus feats.

General
Q: Can a 3rd level manifester really do 10d10 by spending 10 points on Mind Thrust?
A: Only if he cheats. The single most important rule in the XPH is that you cannot spend more power points on a single manifestation than your manifester level for the class in question. So, a third-level psion can only spend 3 power points on any single manifestation, -- base cost, augmentation, metapsionics and any miscellaneous effects (i.e. Catapsi) included.

Q: All right, so he has to have a high ML to pay the price. What ways can he use to increase that ML?
A: There's currently very few, unlike caster level, and also unlike caster levels, they (usually) don't improve much about the powers themselves beyond range and duration (i.e. they usually only give you the *option* of spending more than you normally could, but you still have to spend it). The two most common are the Overchannel feat and the Wild Surge class ability (the latter of which is the exception to the guideline on spending above, but comes with a great cost in terms of Enervation), though a couple racial substitution levels in Races of Eberron include +1ML for a given discipline. Additionally, the feat Practiced Manifester in Complete Psionic increases your ML by up to 4, but not above your hit dice. Finally, in games with complete transparency, some items that boost caster level (such as the Orange Ioun Stone) may also apply.

Q: I think I've got this augmentation thing down. It's essentially a type of Heighten Power with a boost to the actual power as well, right?
A: Wrong, actually. Although the DC and effect increases in line with the cost, the actual level of the power is unchanged, unlike Heighten Spell. Thus, even a 20-power-point, 20d6 Energy Ray will count as a 1st level power, despite costing more than a 10th level spell in equivalent price. This is important when fighting anyone with a Globe of Invulnerability or Spell Turning up. Thus, if you rely on augmented powers, be sure to give your opponents a test poke before you let loose a nova.

Q: Can you "counter-power" a psionic manifestation, just like counterspelling a spell?
A: In a word, no. You can't counter-power, nor can you counter a power with a spell or a spell with a power.
Do note that due to psionics-magic transparency, the spell Dispel Magic (which has a counterspell option in addition to its target/area choices) can be used to counter a psionic power by essentially negating its energies as it begins to manifest. This is not present in the Dispel Psionics power (which only has the target/area choice). This relies on a psionics-magic transparency interpretation, though, so not all DMs will allow it. Thankfully, countering is a rarely-used tactic, so this is unlikely to come up in a game situation.

Psi-like Abilities
Q: Do I have to spend power points to augment a psi-like ability? Can I spend power points to use one again?
A: No on both counts. Psi-like abilities each have their own unique manifester level (in every case except the Pyrokineticist, these are explicitly stated in the psi-like ability description). Using a psi-like ability costs you no power points at all, and the effect is treated as if you had spent a number of points on it equal to ITS manifester level (note: not your manifester level, if any). Power points never factor in anywhere -- it's a special ability, not a power known.
In the special case of a psi-like ability that has multiple augments (for instance, Kalashtar with their Mindlink ability), you choose how the psi-like ability is augmented as you use it (i.e. in the kalashtar's case, a 10th level kalashtar (Psi-like ML 5) can mindlink himself with up to 5 other willing people, or himself to one unwilling target, each time he uses the ability.)

Extended Example:
Sandharrow the 8th level psychic warrior decides to use his Stomp psi-like ability (1/day, ML half hit dice). He doesn't need to pay PP to activate it (it's a psi-like ability, not a power). As he stomps, the effect of a 4-power-point Stomp hits play -- he has 8 hit dice, and the ML of his Stomp power is half of that, regardless of his own manifester level). After he's used it, he's out of uses of it for the day (it's 1/day); he can't spend power points to activate it again.

Q: I see Deja Vu printed twice...
A: Yes, we know. This was a deliberate joke on the part of WotC. It's deja vu, you see...

Q: I see Deja Vu printed twice...
A: You're doing that on purpose.

Q: Why is it that my telepath is worse than that wizard at mind control? Psionic Dominate's pretty weak!
A: It's only weak until you check the errata. You'll love the augment.

Q: How, exactly, does Hostile Empathic Transfer work?
A: When you use it, you essentially transfer 50 points of damage (or more with an augment) from yourself to another creature. It's easiest to think of it in terms of transferring damage than stealing life. The area augment is extremely poorly-worded, so your DM has to interpret this on his own.
Complete Psionic rewrote the power dramatically, and though it is so weak as to almost be worthless, it is significantly clearer. That said, its multitarget augment contains a description that could also be used to handle the area augment from the original.

Q: Metaconcert makes my brain hurt.
A: It's also an abstractly-worded power. Woefully little about it is actually defined, particularly anything about the "entity". There's no single way to solve this particular power either, so it's up to your DM.
Personally, I use the variant version present in Untapped Potential, which was written for precisely the same reason you asked this question. However, this is a houserule.

Q: Is there any limit to the size of an object whose form you can assume with Metamorphosis?
A: Surprisingly, not in the rules. This means the size limit is "whatever your DM lets you do" -- which in 9 out of 10 cases means that common sense rules the day. The remaining 1 out of 10 are those who do silly things like assuming the form of a large star and literally going nova, destroying the Material Plane and your game in the process, assuming it wasn't already destroyed by such a ludicrous DM or player before level 7.

Cancer prognosis: I am now cancer-free.

General
Q: Is there a psionic equivalent of the Mystic Theurge, for manifesting and divine spellcasting? I just see the cerebremancer (arcane/psi).
A: Yes. It's called the Psychic Theurge. (Incidentally, this is why I suggested checking out the links above -- it's prominently visible on the Mind's Eye archive.)

Elocator
Q: Scorn Earth frightens and confuses me.
A: Think of it as an always-on psionic levitate that lets you function normally if you're close to the ground and you'll do fine. (This isn't 100% accurate by the rules as written, which allow you to function normally if you're within 1 foot of a wall as well, but it's close enough for most gamers.)

Illithid Slayer
Q: What's the difference between the SRD slayer and the illithid slayer?
A: The illithid slayer's favored enemy is fixed to illithidkin, and has a roleplaying requirement of having defeated an illithid as part of a small group. The SRD slayer has a flexible flavored enemy (any psionic creature) and has no RP restriction (meaning a DM who doesn't want to use the illithid slayer can simply keep illithids out of his game, while he can't do anything about the SRD slayer short of banning it).

Power Stones
Q: Can I manifest a power from a power stone with my own points without flushing the stone, as per XPH page 64?
A: There was much debate on this. The eventual conclusion was "If your DM lets you, it's a reasonable interpretation of the rules". However, Complete Psionic has a sidebar on this, page 105, that cleary says "using a power stone in this way expends the power within the stone." So the final answer, sans houserules, is no.

Psicrowns
Q: Can I recharge a psicrown with my own points, like a cognizance crystal?
A: No. A psicrown is not a psionic storage device, it's the analogue of a staff. No rules exist to recharge a psicrown by channelling your own points into the crown directly. If your DM allows someone to recharge a staff (likely through a gold/XP cost and the use of the appropriate item creation feat), then you can recharge a psicrown the same way (provided you could make it)... but you can't recharge it simply by draining your leftover points into it at the end of the day.

Blue
Q: What's the blue's Level Adjustment?
A: This was cleared up in the errata. It's officially +1. There has been much debate on this, with valid arguments on both sides (+0 and +1). In the end, I suggest going with what works in your game.

Psicrystal
Q: What levels, exactly, count toward the psicrystal's abilities? Prestige classes say they don't, and the monster entry says "only levels in psion and wilder"...
A: Go by the primary source -- Psicrystal Affinity. It's 'levels in psionic classes.' A psionic class is one that grants, or requires, the Psionic subtype -- as such, every class in the XPH, including the Psychic Warrior and the prestige classes, will advance the psicrystal. (The text in the XPH about PrCs not advancing class features such as psicrystals is a copy/paste holdover error from 3.0 psionics where psicrystals were class features of the Psion class.)
Yes, this also means Soulknife levels count, although a soulknife can't get one without multiclassing.

Q: What happens when my psicrystal dies?
A: The official response from Customer Service is "You can get another one." That is all that is written on the subject, as it wasn't addressed in Complete Psionics. Come up with a suitable houserule -- personally, I've tried a few different ones, but from now on will be using the simplest, inspired by the Tome of Magic: It reforms on its own after 24 hours. I must stress, though, this is a house rule -- no official method of getting a psicrystal back exists (though it's clear you do get another one), and no penalty exists when it dies (beyond not having your crystal around).

Q: What's this I hear about psicrystals gaining feats? Familiars dont'!
A: A psicrystal isn't a familiar, though. A familiar says that it is treated as if it were a creature of its master's HD for effects relating to HD, such as Sleep. A psicrystal's HD entry is "as master" -- meaning it actually gains HD. Every intelligent creature that gains hit dice gains feats. Conclusion: Psicrystals gain feats.
Note that a psicrystal doesn't gain hit points from these construct hit dice (its hit point entry is "half master's"), and its saving throws are unaffected (saving throw text "as master"), and that it does not gain skill points from them either (skill entry rules give it at least 4 ranks in certain skills, and otherwise identical skills to it's master's)... but in other regards, it gains Construct hit dice.

I should stress the point that this follows from game design principles. No WotC source has yet printed the statistics block for an advanced character's psicrystal, and it isn't explicitly called out in the rules that they do (it's clear implicitly).

See the update below if you want to break into intent discussions (although there's no need to; intent is crystal clear here).

Q: What is a psicrystal's base attack bonus?
A: As a direct result of the way the rules work, it'll be 3/4 the psicrystal's hit dice -- in other words, the base attack bonus of a cleric/rogue/psychic warrior of a level equal to the sum of your psionic class levels.
(Note that if the psicrystal did not gain hit dice, no rules exist for the replacement of base attack bonus (familiars have such rules), and thus a psicrystal would be permanantly stuck with a +0 base attack bonus.)

Q: Wait, this is all very confusing...
A: It may seem so. Here's an example from a hypothetical 5th level psion's psicrystal. All that matters for the sake of comparison here is that we have a 5th level master (the exact statistics of the master are not essential to the psicrystal's stats; the stats depending on the master's are left referencing the master's). Anything bolded is different from the basic stat block.[sblock=Psicrystal (5th level master):]Size/Type: Diminutive Construct

Manifest: Analogous to "cast" -- a wizard casts a spell, a psion manifests a power.

Power Points: Analogous to "spell slots." A psion spends power points to manifest his powers, and has a limited amount of them per day. The conversion between spell slot level and equivalent amount of power points is: Double the spell level, subtract one (1,3,5,7,9,11,13,15,17 for 1st-9th level spell equivalents). No psionic character can spend more power points than his manifester level on any single power manifestation.

Psionicist: An obsolete term from earlier editions, but sometimes encountered anyway. 'Psionicist' is to 'manifester' as 'mage' or 'priest' is to 'spellcaster'.

Psionics Board Terminology

MRAOW! *kaboom*: A comical phrase that is intended as a mockery/dismissal of a poorly-researched thread. Comes from the expression "Every time you post ANOTHER poorly-researched thread complaining about psionics, God kills a kitten." Proposed by RadicalTaoist and Reinforcements.

Nova: Based on astronomical novas and a maneuver in Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, 'nova' means two things in a psionic context.
1) verb. To 'go nova' is to expend a large amount of a limited resource in a very short span of time to accomplish a spectacular effect, often at the price of remaining very, very weak for the remainder of the day.
2) noun. An attack or attack routine that would qualify as going nova.
Psions are notoriously easy to go nova with, as they have no automatic scaling and it's extremely tempting to fully-augment everything at first -- as a result, many new psion players end up blowing up the first encounter of the day, and shooting crossbow bolts the rest of it. A guide to such attacks is available here, written by DisposableHero. Term coined by Tempest Stormwind.

Psionic X: Tacking the word "psionic" on something to make it 'cooler' or 'better' with no regard to psionic flavor whatsoever, or adding something to psionics with similar disregard. Textbook examples include any direct psionic lich and several things dealing with the undead, along with many of the monsters in Complete Psionic (notably the Sybillic Guardian, an angel-like being surrounded by runes). With a bit of creativity and reflavoring, though, it is quite possible to bypass The Psionic X. An example of bypassing this in the case of a psionic lich is available here, which can serve as a springboard for similar developments. First proposed by Tempest Stormwind.

Sticks & Stones power: A power that is unlikely to be taken as a power known due to limited applicability, but will likely see use in dorjes (crystal sticks) or power stones. Usually highly situational or of limited use for repeated manifestations -- Psionic Identify comes to mind. Originator unknown (though I'm pretty sure who it is, I'd like to be absolutely certain before I credit anyone.)

Psionic Abbreviations

BRC: Bruce R. Cordell, author of the Expanded Psionics Handbook and Hyperconscious. (Uncommon but seen)

CPsi: Complete Psionic.

ML: Manifester level (an analogue to Caster Level, unique to each psionic manifesting class). Unlike power point pools, ML do not stack with each other; they remain distinct.

PP: Power points. Sometimes called PSP (a throwback to earlier editions).

Psywar: Psychic Warrior. Very common shorthand. (note: It's "Psychic" warrior, not "psionic" warrior.)

XPH: Expanded Psionics Handbook. Sometimes also abbreviated EPH.

Cancer prognosis: I am now cancer-free.

Here are four that come up quite a bit

1) What powers can I select as a psion. If I am a telepath can I select powers that are not of my discipline? (I am so over this one)

2) Can a 3rd level manifester really do 10d10 by spending 10 points on Mind Thrust? (No. Due to his manifester cap he can only spend 3 points unless he has a feat that lets him exceed this limit, or has the wild surge class feature).

4) What happens if your psicrystal dies? (You e-mail cust serve and weep at the answer, or lack thereof).

5) Did anyone else notice that Deja Vu is printed twice in the book? Was this a joke? (funny, I feel like I have read this exact question dozens of times before and am doomed to see it repeated dozens of times yet).
6: How does schism actually work? I'll leave that one to you AD ;)
7: Is there any rules changes from the Expanded Psionic Book in the Complete Psionic.

8: Do augmented powers count as being a higher effective level - for example, for the penetration of a Globe of Invulnerability?

I protest the portrayal of your opinion that psicrystals gain feats as fact. Your assumption that "every intelligent creature that gains hit dice gains feats. Conclusion: Psicrystals gain feats." Is trying to prove a negative. By this I mean you are saying well, every other intellingent creature that gains hit dice gains feats so a psicrystal does to. This is not proof. The psicrystal is a unique entity in the D&D multiverse. It is treated uniquely for multiple applications and as such does not necessarily follow your claim.

The other evidence I have seen presented is the response from customer service which is left to personal interpretation at best, uselessly inconclusive at worst.

That said, the psicrystal may indeed gain feats. I'm not argueing one way or another (in this particular thread.) I have read all your posts on the subject as well as all those anyone else has posted. My purpose is not to debate. I just don't agree that it should be presented as fact at this juncture.

I'm not trying to prove a negative. This follows from logic. Here it is, presented in a concise (but not concise enough, because I wanted to cover *all* contingencies) form.

Statement: Psicrystals are creatures. (Proof: Monster entry, everywhere else)
Statement: Intelligent creatures gain feats as they gain hit dice. (Proof: Monster manual)
Statement: Psicrystals are intelligent. (Proof: Intelligence score)
Statement: Psicrystals actually gain Hit Dice. (Proof: HD "as master" -- actual gain)
Statement: Sometimes rules are overwritten (Example: Psicrystal hit points.)
Given: If a rule is not overwritten, use the overarcing one instead.
Given: The psicrystal feat entry is not overwritten.
Conclusion: Psicrystals gain feats.

The other evidence I have seen presented is the response from customer service which is left to personal interpretation at best, uselessly inconclusive at worst.

Sometimes they get it right, sometimes they get it wrong (to quote an Unglued card, "Wizards of the Coast Customer Service: 50% accurate, 100% legal!"). I only cite them when they're consistent (such as "you can get another psicrystal").

That said, the psicrystal may indeed gain feats. I'm not argueing one way or another (in this particular thread.) I have read all your posts on the subject as well as all those anyone else has posted. My purpose is not to debate. I just don't agree that it should be presented as fact at this juncture.

EDIT: Oops, I also want to say, "Excellent Work!"

It's because of that reasoning that it's presented as fact. I suppose I could rephrase it to make it clear that this is from first principles instead of explicit statement, though.

Cancer prognosis: I am now cancer-free.

You keep saying that. I do not think it means quite what you think it means.

A psicrystal, as printed, has the HD of it's master. That means that the Psicrystal would have a base attack bonus, feats, and ability score bonus based on that HD. This is different from a familiar as a familiar only states that it is treated as it's master's HD for effects that look at those HD. A familiar does not gain feats or ability score increases. Because of this small change in wording, the psicrystal is a bit different, and the DM of the campaign may choose to treat the psicrystal in a similar way as the familiars. But again, that would be a DM's call.

Do psicrystals increase their BAB, ability scores and gain feats like normal creatures when their effective Hit Dice increases (from their owner gaining levels)? Or do psicrystals advance only as noted on pages 22-24 and 207-208?

Hookay, let's dissect this:

A psicrystal, as printed, has the HD of it's master. That means that the Psicrystal would have a base attack bonus, feats, and ability score bonus based on that HD.

Statement: Psicrystal, as printed, have a base attack bonus, feats, and ability score bonuses based on its HD.

...the DM of the campaign may choose to treat the psicrystal in a similar way as the familiars. But again, that would be a DM's call.

[Emphasis mine.]

Statement: Your DM may decide to overrule this, but that would be a house rule.

Again, I don't care if people agree with this ruling or not. However... This is the only official ruling on the matter at the moment, regardless of people's opinions of CustServ. The ruling itself is quite clear that... unless your DM decides to house rule away... psicrystals do base attack bonuses, feats, and ability score bonuses based on its HD.

If anyone would like to validly dispute this ruling, don't shoot the messenger--take the issue up with Ask Wizards, Sage Advice or CustServ.
Please listen!

I do not want to pollute this commendable work with negativity and debate.

I would be more than happy to listen to any point of view on the subject. I'm equally enthusiastic to present counterpoints. Just send me a PM or begin another thread. Dissension won't help the psionic "cause."

Let's end the discussion in respect for Tempest's effort (even though he posted an arguement himself.)
I posted the argument for (which is a summary of the same ruling that Azzy provided), but modified my FAQ entry nonetheless to account for the opposing houserule.

Any other frequently asked questions to submit?

And is anyone who's more familiar with UA than I am willing to write a brief answer to the common antipsi question comparing PP to the Spell Points system (that seems to shortchange the wizard)?

Cancer prognosis: I am now cancer-free.

Seishi: I think it might be fun to have a one-off [game] tuned fairly, but with the intention of wiping the party.

DisposableHero_: if [my campaign] has taught me nothing else, it is that with this group, nothing tuned fairly will ever wipe the party

RadicalTaoist: I've been throwing **** at this group that's 5 levels over CRed in DFN, and have yet to wipe the party.

TS, you're doing an admirable job thusfar. If I may, could you accomadate two things:

* Psionic focus needs to have its own heading (as is done with psicrystals) under Skills & Feats Questions instead of just being expounded upon in the course of a question. While the current question covers the topic that a focus can only power one feat or ability, IMO, gaining other foci shopuld be a separate topic rather than a footnote. Also, in addition to Psicrystal Affinity/Psicrystal Containment and Epic Psionic Focus, could you also put in a note about the Psychic Weapon Master and its ability to hold a focus in its bonded weapon?

* Another feat topic, Linked Power was the source of much contention. Can you add in the CustServe response to the Linked Power issue that Tleilaxu_Ghola kindly provided us with?

This is worded extremely confusingly. Essentially what it is saying is that if the two powers share a targeting type, they must target the same area or target. (Two cones must be faced the same. If you can target one creature with both, they both target the same creature.) If the two spells have different targeting types. (All creatures within 30 ft vs. Cone. One touched target vs. burst centered on you) Then you may select whatever targets you like that are legal. But you must announce both immediately when you cast the first power.

Good Luck and game On!

Will do both.

I have to leave for work straightaway, so it'll be forthcoming, but yes, they'll be up.

I held off on Link Power since, to be honest, I don't fully understand its current optimization state myself (TG had a few false starts, it seems). And I agree, upon a reread, that I should expand the psi-focus bit a bit more, and not just do it all-encompassingly like I did in the New Player's Guide.

Good to see a new faq up. I'm very tired of seeing so many of the same question and answering so many of the same. Though it may be redundant, having an important link section in here may be useful as well. ;)
Psicrystals
Q.
What is a Psicrystal's BAB?
Updates complete.

By the way, maybe it's due to the mind-numbing element of work, but something's nagging me about this. Either I forgot a question, or I didn't answer one correctly. I also don't think I've been as neutral as I should in an FAQ (I adopt a more casual approach than usual, as you may have noticed). If anyone has any feedback as to the content of these (beyond the psicrystal-HD one and its consequences; I'm not changing that, due to it being a literal reading of the rules and not adding rules that don't apply), please give it here.

Cancer prognosis: I am now cancer-free.

Done. I've also included an example advanced psicrystal (5th level master) with all the changes to the base stats called out in bold.

It's not as hard to do as you'd think, but it does seem counter-intuitive enough that some DMs will houserule it with the familiar rules.

Q.
Is there no limit to the size of inanimate object you can assume with the metamorphosis power?
I'd like to see Index: 3.5 Psionics Outside the XPH in your links section if thats possible :D

Great job as always Tempest
Tempest: What is your opinion of customer service? I know you're writing the FAQ and all, but I feel that there should be a "customer service reponse" section in your FAQ.

Selecting one interpretation from one customer service representive or, as in the case of Psicrystals today, ignoring a recent response shows extreme bias on your part. Wouldn't it be fair to at least quote these reponses (in order of most recent first) even if you don't agree with them?

I'm sure there's at least a few people out there who actually like to get feedback from customer service.
On the psicrystals, you might note that it's a popular house rule to use the rules for familiars for psicrystals' HD, BAB, and feats.

Have all your DMs and other you know used this house rule, how did it start?

Don't mean to stat a debate, I'm just curious Tempest Stormwind.

Maybe we should have a FAQ on the Illithid feats?
That whole add PP to Mind Blast doesn't make sense. Has Cut Serv ever answered that? (curious if anyone knows).

But great work Tempest.

And the fact that you ignore the earlier one that Azzy posted AND the most recent one brought up in that thread (which says they do, although it also says they aren't constructs) means you put extensive trust in CustServ if they support your view and ignore those that don't.

Customer Service is 50% accurate, 100% official. Hence why I do not operate on what they say (my argument is based on literal interpretation of the rules, not what CustServ said).

So, I should add "It might be, but maybe not" to the end of every answer?

There are a few areas where custserv is 100% consistent -- 'you can get another psicrystal' is one of them. I included these.

Otherwise, I'm not answering questions. I'm providing *more* questions.

I've shown what the rules say, and included text that says that some DMs do otherwise. Isn't that enough?

Seishi: I think it might be fun to have a one-off [game] tuned fairly, but with the intention of wiping the party.

DisposableHero_: if [my campaign] has taught me nothing else, it is that with this group, nothing tuned fairly will ever wipe the party

RadicalTaoist: I've been throwing **** at this group that's 5 levels over CRed in DFN, and have yet to wipe the party.

Updated Psicrystal, drawing upon the results of my extended Q&A session with Trevor K of CustServ, who forwarded many of my questions directly to R&D.

I hope that this is the end of the debates, and that this thread continues as a resource for psionic players. If anyone thinks of any common questions I missed, please post them here.

In fact, if all you have is a minor question about psionics, feel free to raise it here. I won't update the FAQ with every question, but I'll update with common or popular ones.

Cancer prognosis: I am now cancer-free.

minor nitpick, but IMO mind seed is a terrible power to represent a "sticks and stones" power. largely because it's available as a universal item costing less XP to make than it takes to manifest the power. i think it even costs less to buy because of the XP difference.

specifically:
Pearl, Mind Seed
This tiny pearly sphere instantly takes on the skin tone and texture of whatever creature handles it. It speeds toward its target when hurled by its owner. He can hurl the pearl at any target within 150 feet that he can see and to which he has line of effect. If the target fails a DC 22 Will saving throw, the pearl seems to impact and then enter the flesh of the target. The target is affected as if by a mind seed power, with the pearl’s wielder acting as the manifester. The use destroys the item.

Strong telepathy; ML 15th; Craft Universal Item, mind seed; Cost 6,000 gp + 2,500 XP; Price 18,500 gp.

but that's just IMO. and of course, if you expand "sticks and stones" to include universal items, then i suppose the example suddenly becomes an incredibly apt one, since i can't imagine anyone wanting to pay more XP than they have to...
You can never build a psionic item that costs less xp then it costs to manifest the power. The XP cost of the power is added as another component of making the item, and increases the GP cost as well.
