This thread is to discuss your thoughts on Jon Louck's article - "Context Clues" and the role R&D takes in developing menu systems for the Magic Online Wide Beta client.

I am pleased that the designers are attempting to formalise the GUI properly. Clearly it's a huge task and so should not be rushed.

Also, it feels good to read a designer's article, and be able to agree with practically all his points.

Go draft, young man, go draft!

@the section "To Menu, or Not to Menu?":

Why not do it like the current client?

If a card only has 1 activated ablity, a left click directly activates it, while a right click opens the context menu.

Nobody needs this terrible representation of the whole cardinformation. That's not what context menus are meant to do. Even if somehow somebody thinks that its needed it would be nice if there was a way to turn of that behaviour so that a right click only shows the context menu (i.e. like it works in v3).

Why change stuff that works pretty good in v3, and make it worse?

I agree, if you need to see the whole card and it can't be displayed correctly in play. isn't that what floating card window is for? Or the middle click to zoom?

I also agree with the point made by SteBtwo. Why using the right click "window" to display the card information. I would be better to only show the different choice available using the context menu and leave the card description to the middle click zoom or for the floating window.

We should keep what was working from v3 and not confuse the user by adding way too much information.

The rest is quite nice and I like the way the context menu is handled. You probably miss a usability/graphical interface specialist in the team to fix these issues. This isn't an easy task, good luck.

I would prefer to see talented Designers like Jon focusing on how to bring back leagues or other ways to shorten the game time of a magic draft or sealed (asynchronous way of playing if this is achievable, leagues or other ways to split the magic experience). I am a father and cannot find 3 hours to play a draft regularly. I am ready to play more but as I don't play as often as I would like, I get rusted and therefore lose more than I should, get frustrated and then play less.

I would have way to play regularly in sessions of 1/2 to 1 hour time then I would play much more.

Wizards should cater for this customer base because we have money and we are ready to spend it on MTGO but are not given the opportunity.

All the best
