This thread is for the discussion of all Tezzeret decks.

What is Tezzeret and how is it played?

Tezzeret is a x control deck that seeks to win by gaining infinite turns with Time Vault and Tezzeret the Seeker/Voltaic Key. The deck's namesake plays a key role in being able to tutor out the vault and then combo with it the following turn. With such a compact and inexpensive combo the deck is free to run a robust and solid control suite with force of will, mana drain and a multitude of other disruption.

The money cards for this deck are vault/tez right? (Assuming you have the other money cards that are staples in nearly every vintage control deck)
Everything else is a general staple of blue control so, yes tez and vault are the new money cards.

Hi guys, it's time for me to put ahead the result of my Tezzeret testing!!

The decklist that you are about to see was made by two of my teammates Ugo Rivard & Ian Sauvé Team CRET, Montreal. Some of you might remember Ugo for stealing the top prices at the SCG: Rochester tourneys (more than once!!!) The first time would be when we quebecers brought to the world the name deck "Bomberman"... But for you to know, Ugo wasn't playing "Bomberman", he was playing CONTROL SLAVER.

He's doing very very well with this deck from there 'till now. Winning a couple of tournament around Quebec, making a lot of top 4/top 8 appearances, Ugo has a certain fervor for the deck!!! Every now and then the decklist of Control Slaver changed a bit but those were minor modification/tweaking from the original decklist. The shell of the deck will never go away... The deck is doing well in the new "Magic" environment (restriction and all new decks) but needed maybe a new twist to be more consistent. When I showed up with Tezzeret at a Poker/Ante night, it all gotten started. We talked for hours about how Wizards could remove/make an errata on Time Vault and releasing Tezzeret at the same time!?!? A one card combo, that pitch to Force of Will and Misdirection. Conclusion, we had to play it.

Ok, now we can go back to the deck. This isn't a Tezzeret decklist with Welders in it... don't get me wrong... it's a CONTROL SLAVER decklist with Tezzeret combo in it. (!?!?!?!?) Same thing, no! Look alike, yes! The approach is totally different if you're playing Tezz or Slaver... you probably won't make the same decisions from one deck to the other because of the card pool/backup plans you have and number of kills.

Basically, we took out the combo pieces from Control Slaver and replaces them for Tezzeret combo.

-1 Gift Ungiven
-1 Crucible of Worlds
-1 Seat of Synod

+1 Time Vault

And that the result is called:

3 Threads of Disloyalty
15 cards

I tried so hard to make them include 1x Voltaic Key but I failed the mission.
They told me over and over that the Key IS a dead card in your hand 97% of the time. So her inclusion would be card disadvantage and card advantage is probably the Key of this deck!!! (No dead cards in hand)
That's why we play 2x Ancestral Recall (meaning 1x Ancestral Recall main deck and the one in YOUR deck with 3x Misdirection!!) Wink

So that's the idea we had behind our heads when building this deck...

My 2 cents, for now!
Thoughts on cutting hurkyl's recall for a 2nd misdirection?

I'm maining this stuff as far as counters/removal go
4 mana drain
4 force of will
1 misdirection
2 rack and ruin
1 echoing truth
1 fire/ice
1 hurkyl's recall

Possibly cut the recall for a LoA but I dislike LoA so I'm leaning towards the misdirection

-1 hurkyl's recall (move to side...if needed!?!?) +1 LOA (it wins vs mirror and/or any control deck)
-2 Rack and Ruins (unless your field is 60% Shops) +1-2 MisD or anything else...

Why don't you try my version...especially if your afraid of hitting some Shop deck?
We just did a little update last week on our Mind of the Seeker decklist.

-1 Mindslaver (it's irrelevant most of the time and we never tutor for it anymore...)
+1 Sundering Titan (moved from SB to MD because we needed room for some Leylines in the Board)

We had to change the SB a bite...now there's 4 Leylines in it...
Have you had the chance to play this in tournaments yet? I would love to see a report.

How has the Angel worked out for you? It seemed lackluster when I threw the deck together, but I only played ~5 games with it.

Have you ever had a problem with tez being answered? For instance playing against painter w/ multiple red blasts being able to kill him. Does voltaic key deserve a slot?
Vintage Deckbuilding-Your First Vintage Tournament
Yes, that IS a picture of me that I am using for my avatar.
The deck is really solid.

Platinum Angel can steal some games by her own! (combine with Counter backup and Welder...wow!)

Tezz isn't that important...we side it out a lot of time...(-2 Tezz, -1 Vault) gives you nice room to bring hate. And most people gonna side in things against Tezz and your not playing it anymore!!

Most of my teamates (TEAM CRET) are playing that version and are getting incredible result. (We have a serie of tournament over the year to be qualified in a big "Black Lotus" Tournament...and the finals are next weekend.) 3 out of 5 members got qualified with this decklist. The last one two weeks ago. (Ugo Rivard, Ian Sauvé, Yan Lampron) You can see the standings on deckcheck.net...I got qualified playing Painter about 6 months ago!
I'm really liking this build. I'm not sure if Triskelavus should be Triskelion or not. I'm also not sure if I should just cut mindslaver. I don't want to but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Also, if you cut slaver isn't the deck just Tezzeret with Welder?

Yes, that IS a picture of me that I am using for my avatar.
We should probably throw a list up using Aven Mindscensor as well. The splash white is pretty good, especially in mirror matches.

When the Meandeck Tezz list comes out after Worlds, that will be one to post. It uses Draw 7's instead of Drains... but has some added stuff.
Should that one actually go in this thread? It doesn't use tez ... or drains ... or try to play a control game. I think it will have its own thread.

As for the white splash, got a list, or better yet a link to morphling/tournament report?

Either way, I need to update the first post to a list that isn't illegal. I'll get on it sometime today.
Vintage Deckbuilding-Your First Vintage Tournament
Yes, that IS a picture of me that I am using for my avatar.
Technically, I guess the Meandeck Tezz list is Tezzless VaultKey Combo... but that is what Tezz is used for anyways. It is kind of like Slaverless Slaver.

I don't have a white list post. But you throw in 3 Aven Mindscensor and 1 Trinket Mage in the place of 4 Bobs really lol. Plus a few Tundras.

I can find one later or put my list up.
Why does OP use Snow Covered Island?
Why does OP use Snow Covered Island?

Gifts Ungiven

Tez is a control deck with the tv/k combo in it. The concoction that won in pitt was pure combo, no control. Or at least that is what I have heard. I guess I'll hold my judgement unti lI see a list.

The OP needs updating since Inkwell Leviathan is usually better than Darksteel Colossus and Thirst For Knowledge is restricted.

1 Rebuild/Hurkyl's Recall

This leaves 6 open slots. This almost always includes at least 1 more counterspell and 1 removal spell for creatures. Many versions will include at least 1 Tezzeret, as he's a powerful clock and another blue spell to pitch to Force. Other good choices include:

Additional Hurkyl's Recall/Rebuild
1 Library of Alexandria - Powerful card in the Mana Drain mirror
1 Chain of Vapor - Catch-all, cheap bounce spell
1 Darkblast - Recursively deals with small creatures
1 Fire//Ice - Deals with most creatures, can 2 for 1, and tap random stuff down
1 Rack and Ruin - Deals with Null Rod and Vault/Key effectively

I think the Ub version is a little more solid. I don't think red offers anymore than what blue already has. I was playing Itous version, for the most part for a little bit, and was not really taken by it.

This thread might as well just have the auto-includes listed and, as you already have suggested... possible a card pool for the extra slots.

For instance: I prefer to run 2 Voltaic Keys. Some people like to run 2 Tezzerets. etc

Remember folks, if you run 2 tez, you can put: "Two Tezerett's , one vault." as the deck name on your signup sheets.

Hey look it's two Tez, this is pretty hot.

Oh, that's a nice timevault, I wonder what they're gonna do.

Two maindeck tops and no maindeck repeal? D:

I'd rather run a 3rd duress before misdirection.
I usually take out the second top for tormod's crypt.
Misdirection has tested awesome for me. I would run at least 1 in any broken blue deck.
My freind plays a Tezz vault deck, he's trying out a couple of Cunning wish in the MD, to find Ravenous Trap, Extirpate etc in his board. It's been going pretty well for him so far. Aside from that, the only other unique point is the inclusion of Fire//Ice, since it shoots down opposing dark confidants and can tap down something unpleasant to allow for time walking to victory with leviathan.

Anyway, I was wondering, aside from Ichorid decks, what cards does Tezz-Vault deck not want it opponent's to play?

Null Rod - by far the most played anti-Vault weapon - you want at least 2 maindeck answers to it.

Most storm decks are slightly unfavorable game 1, but they're not particularly popular at the moment. If you're concerned about them, Trinisphere, Arcane Lab, and M. Trap are the way to go. Expect Sadistic Sacrament and/or Phyrexian Negator from them after sideboarding.

You don't want your opponent to resolve lock cards (Sphere of resistance/Tanglewire/Welder/Crucible/Chalice at 2/Smokestack/Null Rod etc.), Combo/hand disruption (Aven Mindcensor, Hide/seek/Ancient Grudge/Rack and Ruin/Duress/'seize), Card Advantage (Bob, Ancestral, TFK, FoF, AK(Level 1 is okay but anything past that is iffy) etc.) and you definitely don't want broken cards to resolve (The 2nd piece in the key/vault combo, yawg will, tinker, gifts, Tezz etc.)
On the play, isn't a resolved Chalice for 0 pretty good agaisnt T-Vault? Since it locks out six pieces of power, petal and crypt? I'm debating whether or not to drop petal, jet and lotus from a deck of mine(not t-vault) in order to play Chalice. I ask here, because the deck I play agaisnt most of the time is T-Vault, and people are always happy to assess the weaknesses of their own deck.

Petal is generally only good in storm or in a deck where you want t1 drain mana a lot so it doesn't see as much play.

Players don't cut moxen because of chalice, they cut them because of null rod. Most people with a chalice on the play drop their moxen and then play chalice which propels them ahead of their opponent on mana.

I didn't really care if I got hit by a chalice for zero unless my opening hand was mox heavy, Chalice for two is the sweet spot against vault decks because it forces them to tinker/tez out vault, shuts off drains, shuts off bob/ak and hurkyl's recall (But nobody should be using hurkyl's recall because rebuild is infinitely better)

Not sure about it, but I'll give it a shot. I hear there's a lot of stax up in Baltimore, so there's some Goyfs to fight their Golems and go through their lock pieces

Bus, you've been to the Philly Open, right? What's the meta like up there?
I haven't been to the Philly open... and the Philly guys haven't gone to the Pittsburgh events when I go, so I don't really know them all that well.

From the last pittsburgh event, there was quite a bit of Fish (bunch of variants), quite a bit of Shop (with Lodestone... quite a few of us Clevelanders sported that deck), and then the usual Tezz and Oath garb.
