This thread is for the discussion of all The Perfect Storm (TPS) decks.

What is The Perfect Storm and how is it played?

TPS, or The Perfect Storm, is the sole survivor of tendrils based strategies after the restriction of brainstorm. This deck is a combo-control deck that focuses on using rituals such as dark ritual and cabal ritual along other spells to get a storm count of 9 or higher and cast a lethal tendrils of agony. Unlike its brethren in Long, TPS seeks a turn 3-4 win instead of a dedicated turn 1-2 win. In order to achieve this it runs a large disruption suite including force of will, duress, thoughtseize and misdirection.

With the large concentration of must-counter spells in this deck it is often the plan to horde spells until turn 2-3 and then explode, casting one game bending spell after another until one resolves. The easiest route to victory is off of the back of yawgmoth's will but that is by no means the only way to create a high storm count, cards like necropotence and yawgmoth's bargain also easily help to achieve the desired affect.

Thanks for the catch, it was actually memory jar that was missing.

What do you get with Gifts?
What do you get with Gifts?

It all depends on the situation...

Gift's piles can look like these examples:

Example 1:
Lion's Eye Diamond
Black Lotus
Dark Ritual
Cabal Ritual

Assuming you have a way to get Yawg Will already (maybe its in your hand)...

Example 2:
Demonic Tutor
Ancestral Recall
Tinker
Black Lotus/Vamp Tutor/Whatever

It really makes an opponent think... and they will almost never give you Tinker.
I dont play tps but would mana drain work?
NO LOTUS MUTHA ****IN' SHOPS BURN'T DOWN THE MUTHA ****IN' GENCON
TPS is very strong AGAINST mana drain decks.

If you use Mana Drain, you are really changing the whole build of the deck (using Intuition, Accumulated Knowledge, etc...). Look at a deck called Drain Tendrils if you want to use a Drain based Tendrils deck.
Beleive me, I know what drain tendrils is Lol. I was just throwing out a suggestion.
NO LOTUS MUTHA ****IN' SHOPS BURN'T DOWN THE MUTHA ****IN' GENCON
why would you want drain in this build? doesnt really make that much sense. Mana Drain = Reactive.
Stephen's articles should be free right about now. Since it takes 3 months some people might have forgotten to check, so I'll just link to them here. After reading them again they are still relevant and a good primer for anyone that hasn't played TPS much in the past.

I'm having trouble getting my hands on a twister :X would splashing wheel of fortune be worth it? or is it not worth making myself a bigger wasteland target? I already has the stuff for the splash.

Imperial Seal is underrated. Many lists don't play it - how come?

That's my guess. Plus, P3K really is hard to chase down due to the set's rarity. (Maybe not as much as original Power, but still hard)

That's why they invented proxies.

I use it in my not so ps.
Damn the last post was in April...

So does anyone here still play TPS? It's fun and challenging to play and easy enough to run on 10 proxies. Plus the glut of Remora that people were worried about never really materialized as almost everyone went with Bobs instead.
TPS is still played. Some people play other variants though, such as GWSx.

TPS is still solid though. I have it together, but have actually been playing a Draw 7 Tezz deck lately.
The "Steel City Vault" version that the people at Pittsburgh were saying was a big secret?
The "Steel City Vault" version that the people at Pittsburgh were saying was a big secret?

Yeah. I had the pleasure of playing it twice in a row (Doug Linn and Brian DeMars). After I was notified that it was the same deck (they both played it differently.. Brian never played a Draw 7), I figured I would recreate it... so I jotted it down.

Because I have respect for them, I haven't posted the list (they haven't asked me not to). I am sure it will be revealed after this weekend, at the Vintage Championships.

Its okay.

I crushed it 3 of the 5 games I played it. It lacks disruption, but it has other answers.

I don't think 3 people will T8 with it. Part of it depends on how many people in Meandeck are there, and then how many of them decide to run it over their decks that they feel comfortable with. It's no where near as powerful as Flash was before restrictions.
Sorry for drawing this off-topic, maybe a mod can delete my previous couple of posts. Anyway back to TPS. I have it built for 10-proxy. In testing, my LED is clearly not the best card in it's spot, but I can't add another Grim or a Seal because I'm proxied out. Would you consider Windfall for LED's spot in the list below?

1 Grim Tutor should suffice. I normally never needed more than 1. For some reason, I like DSC more than IL in TPS... not sure why really.... Inkwell is, of course, fine and dandy.

If I were going to play another draw spell (like Windfall), I'd end up splashing Red for Wheel of Fortune. Red also gives me better sideboard options such as Ingot Chewers, Ancient Grudgets, etc to fight through Null Rods/Chalices.
Thanks Busdriver.

Yeah Chalices are why I have Hurky's over CoV, it's going to be set at one. I also like it better for storm count, where many times I have lots of artifacts to bounce and replay but only 2 or 3 land. Also Hurkyl's will bounce any robot where CoV can't touch Inkwell. I do have a Chain and additional bounce in the sideboard, but I like Hurky's better.

I originally had red for Wheel and Burning Wish, but I didn't like replacing Seas with other duals and definitely want to keep my basics. I do like Wheel better than both Windfall and Timetwister though so maybe I'll re-try that.

Watch, I'll do all of this testing, then just end up blowing money on the damn Grim Tutor and proxy the Imperial Seal anyway....
If you are going to be matched up with a lot of Shop decks, I'd definitely keep the Rebuild and Hurkyls MB, with an additional Hurkyl's in the SB.

Otherwise, I'd consider looking at the CoV in the mainboard again.

Another good card I see is Repeal...

For red:

I would not play Burning Wish.. he just doesn't nab anything awesome with Will maindecked.

I'd play it for Wheel in the MB. I'd also consider running 1 Simian Spirit Guide or something. He can be a 2/2 or be that little bit of extra Red you need.

Take out 1 Sea, put in 1 Badlands... so you'd be at 3 Sea, 1 Badlands, 2 Islands, 1 Swamp + 5-6 Fetches or 2 Sea, 1 Badlands, 2 Islands, 1 Swamp + 5-6 Fetches

SB:
1 Badlands
1 Island
3 Ingot Chewer
3 REB
1 Hurkyl's
3 Yixlid Jailer
2 Tormods Crypt
1 Relic of Progenitus

Or something terrible like that lol. I just threw down numbers and cards. You get an extra Badlands when you bring in more red spells.

Obviously. I mean, Soly just got into meandeck unofficially, and smemmememenenenms isn't going to be there. As far as I know, most people in meandeck are gonna be playing with it.
NO LOTUS MUTHA ****IN' SHOPS BURN'T DOWN THE MUTHA ****IN' GENCON
People are going to play whatever they feel like gives them the best chance of winning. If they think its Draw7 Tezz, then great.

I won't lie, the deck is a shitload of fun to play. I can sit there gold fishing it for a while.

Just gotta remember, with the Draw 7's, you have a great possibility to reload your opponents hand with counter and hate as well.

Deck list should be available probably tomorrow, once I think Vintage Worlds is today?
So I was screwing around with a bunch of cards in the LED spot trying to stay on-color. Meditate was pretty bad, Windfall was the same as always, Night's Whisper was underwhelming, I felt like an idiot for even trying Skeletal Scrying, (and you guys are going to call me crazy) but Infernal Contract was awesome. The life loss never was a problem (granted I was testing vs Tez...) but this deck already crushes aggro so I can see sacrificing a little bit vs them for more gas.
Infernal Contract is solid. You don't have much to lose. IC was used in Grim Long and other variants about a year ago. People have strayed away from it because it is a huge payoff for 4 cards (3 mana + XX life). Life is a resource though, and it should be used.
-Insert overused ELD quote here-
NO LOTUS MUTHA ****IN' SHOPS BURN'T DOWN THE MUTHA ****IN' GENCON

This is a post both complaining about ****s on MWS and reviewing how I played.

I accidentally picked the wrong deck without knowing it, and found a match.  I noticed in my opener that I was playing TPS, which I hadn't played in ages (I meant to keep testing my Tezz list) but decided to roll with it.

So I attempt to go off on turn 2 with Tinker into Jar, as I have FoW backup and lots of storm already. It resolves, and I crack jar (removing FoW and Timetwister from the game), and drawing the following cards (I have 1 blue mana floating, and an Island untapped)

The guy immediately asks, "do you win?" I tell him maybe. He says that means I'm a noob who doesn't know how to win with this deck. I ignore him and continue:

Mox Emerald, Inkwell, Delta, Sea, Gifts, Brainstorm, Duress.

I play mox Emerald and Brainstorm into Time Walk, Ritual, and Mox Sapphire. I put back the 2 lands.

I cast Ritual, Gifts, leaving B floating. He once again asks if i can win. I tell him "maybe" and go for the following: Imperial Seal, Lotus Petal, Vampiric Tutor, Ancestral Recall

The Ancestral was a throw-in meant to bait him into giving me the topdeck tutors, so I could cast Will next turn (graveyard included a Delta, Dark Rit, Lotus, Mox Jet, Grim Tutor and Ponder in addition to the other stuff). It doesn't work, and he gives me Petal and Ancestral.

I cast time walk, intending to cast Timetwister next turn.

He starts a new game, complaining that I wasted his time, that I'm a noob, and that I should always know if I can win or not (with TPS). Sick of this guy, I quit.

I probably should've waited until turn 3 to go off, and maybe the Gifts package was a mistake - I've been playing Tezz and DT recently. Grim Tutor for Lotus may have been premature as well, but I just wanted the thing entombed, figuring I could easily find Will.

Was something wrong with my play? If so, what?

yeah, i played against some guys like that bout a year ago. I was getting back into the feel of things and I headed over to what seems to be the last type1 tourney here in san antonio, anyway, I chose TPS as my weapon of choice and haven't looked back. I remember every mirror match I had the opponent would ask me "..do you win..?" I was still rusty with the "beast" and lost every match but had fun doing so even though they made it clear how frustrated they were going against this noob. My point is, play your deck and enjoy "it" and every play involved whether you win or loose, more when you win! lol

As far as your plays go, I usually go for all tutors for gifts and if I cant, I gifts for half draw, half tutors. I do think your turn2 jar could have waited to crack on turn three. That would have allowed you to utilize that timetwister. It would also depend on what kind of deck you were facing.

My last games have been against R/G cascade aggro and Bant fish. I wait as much as I can with R/G because I know it doesn't pack counter back up(at least not this guy) I usually get beat to 5 life by turn 4 and then I blow-up!! HAHA!

Against decks I know pack counters or disruption my plays change and I know I can't afford to let them smash my face with their not-so-fish fish, so I always play like I am packing counters to their counters.

Thing is that TPS does not have to win as soon as possible! I usually go for the win on turn 4 or 5.

I prefer DeMars' model of TPS: Turn 3 Duress, Win.

Thing is, that was definitely not an ideal situation to Gifts in.

With Will and/or a way to find it in hand, along with protection, I would find Black Lotus, Dark/Cabal Ritual, Demonic Tutor, Ancestral Recall. The opponent will almost never give you Ancestral, which is the point - you get the mana you need to go off. Alternatively, if they give you Ancestral, you will almost certainly have enough resources to kill them.

In the same situation without protection, I would replace the Ritual with Misdirection if I have a blue card in hand and Duress if I don't. Again, Ancestral is unlikely to go to your hand, so you'll be getting what you need. Alternatively, if you get Ancestral, it will likely draw countermagic, or give you enough resources to fight through said countermagic.

A mid-game Gifts, in a vacuum will often look similar: DT, Ancestral, Lotus, Tinker/Fact. This guarantees you access to at least 1 business spell, and gives you access to Lotus for future Wills. If you've spent Ancestral, Bargain or Jar are good options. Grim Tutor is a fine replacement for DT, and Cabal Ritual for Lotus, as you should usually have Threshold after Gifts resolves.

There are so many situations, though, it's hard to describe what to do in every given situation.
For a sideboard:

3 Leyline of the Void
1 Ravenous Trap

Mandatory Ichorid hate. The Trap can be found by Mystical and is free, so it's in over the fourth Leyline.

3 Phyrexian Negator

This is an excellent way to fight Arcane Lab, Trinisphere, and M. Trap from Tezz. It's also solid vs. Stax

2 Hurkyl's Recall
1 Rebuild
1 Island
1 Chain of Vapor

Address your worst matchup, Stax.

1 Massacre
1 Darkblast

For Fish

The last slot is a toss-up between Swamp, Leyline, and M. trap

The Perfect Storm
