This thread is for the discussion of all Ichorid decks.

What is Ichorid and how is it played?

(Vintage) Ichorid was originally designed by Stephen Menendian in early '06 as a way to side step the common problems facing decks of the time (counterspells and mana denial). The deck originally used Ichorid and Ashen Ghoul to slowly attack the opponent to death as they sat on all the blanked hate cards. With the printing of Dread Return the deck began using Sutured Ghoul and Dragon Breath to provide an even faster kill. Later when Bridge from Below was printed the deck began using Flame-kin Zealot to make a less all-in combo with the same speed as well as a stronger and even more disrutive deck.

Ichorid plays like a combination between old school SuiBlack and Reanimater. You begin by mulling into Bazaar of Baghdad (often with the help of Serum Powder) and discarding dredge cards like Golgari Grave-Troll. Using the free Ichorids you can disrupt your opponent by using Cabal Therapy, often getting you zombie tokens to further your assault via Bridge from Below.

Manaless Ichorid

There are, effectively, two different versions of manaless Ichorid. There is a combo version as shown above that uses cephalid sage and flame-kin zealot to increase the speed of the kill and then there is the more control oriented version that uses creatures like sundering titan and ancestor's chosen to provide a more secure kill by upping the disruption.

Mana Ichorid

Mana Ichorid is a variant designed to combo out as quickly as possible while taking off much of the reliance on Bazaar of Baghdad. This variant uses blue draw cards such as careful study and breakthrough to replace or add to the power of bazaar. It also uses the land Cephalid Coliseum as an additional, ability based draw option. The deck is considerably faster than its manaless cousins and has the ability to fight against leyline of the void with greater consistancy.

* There is a pretty huge caveat to the match up information for Ichorid. The thing is, the match can swing a lot if the opponent is specifically geared to beat Ichorid. Like many decks Ichorid will be rolled by a critical mass of disruptive cards, the deck tries to balance this in two ways. First it takes a larger amount than many decks to be shut down, often requiring three or more pieces of relevant disruption to be shown before being truly shut out from the race (a Tormod's Crypt/Leyline of the Void doesn't do nearly as much to Ichorid the way Trinisphere or Chalice of the Void does to so many other decks). The second way is that Ichorid throws up a wall of disruption of its own to try and preempt the opponent's plans. Unfortunately this plan means that Ichorid's disruption has to be somewhat tailored to the metagame and so is susceptible to rogue combative strategies (such as Strategic Slaver using spheres, wastelands and counters to keep Ichorid out of the game).

The match up information here is based off of generic builds of the decks that have placed in high profile tournaments from around the world. As always this information is somewhat subjective and definitely open for discussion.

Vintage Deckbuilding-Your First Vintage Tournament
Yes, that IS a picture of me that I am using for my avatar.
Here are my two prior tounament reports. I might have another tournament on the 6th next month if I can make it, however I am still undecided if I want to play Ichorid at that.

I sold my Soul to the Boogie Man
I sold my Soul to the Boogie Man: A story of 1st place at The Cary Cup #2

For starters, my name is Garrett Wiley and I play Ichorid (aka The Boogie Man). I got back into Vintage after a fairly long break at the release of Future Sight, this was because I found a deck that was completely unfair, a deck that only allowed one way interaction the vast majority of the time, a deck that abused the minor rules of the game like triggered effects and replacement effects to their breaking point. This deck, of course, is known as Manaless Ichorid. Thanks to the inclusion of Bridge From Below this deck went from a mostly fair deck that would role over and die from a well timed bounce spell or Swords to Plowshares to a deck that produced a literal army of zombie bears that could easily be backed up by their 3/1 captains and 7/10 generals and still have room in the deck to use the most efficient and broken pieces of disruption printed to date. I had to play this deck, regardless of whether people thought it always went on "auto pilot" or it was a "skilless deck", the abuse contained in this deck simply called to me. Since my return I have played a wide variety of decks from GAT and other gushbond powered decks like Tyrant Oath and The Tropical Storm to workshop based decks like Stax, Serum Powder UbaStax and MAD MUD to other strange graveyard based decks like TurboGush. I have yet to find a deck that is more objectively powerful than Manaless Ichorid. Hence my choice for this tournament.

You can find the list I played in picture format here or in text format below.

Manaless Ichorid

Lands (11)
4 Bazaar of Baghdad
4 City of Brass
2 Wasteland
1 Strip Mine

Creatures (22)
2 Sundering Titan
4 Golgari Grave-Troll
4 Golgari Thug
4 Ichorid
4 Narcomoeba
4 Stinkweed Imp

Enchantments (8)
4 Bridge from Below
4 Leyline of the Void

Spells (11)
1 Darkblast
4 Cabal Therapy
2 Dread Return
4 Unmask

Artifacts (8)
4 Chalice of the Void
4 Serum Powder

Sideboard (15)
4 Chain of Vapor
4 Emerald Charm
4 Gemstone Mine
3 Wispmare

My day started off like normal, I woke up at 6am and tried to fall back asleep for an hour, eventually gave up and just went about the day. After figuring out that I didn't have any other decks fully built I decided to play Ichorid and got myself into the mood by watching Sublime and Hard Candy (both very good horror dramas that mess with your head). About 30 minutes before 12 I started getting ready to go to the tournament, packing bags, taking a shower, printing off a deck list etc. At noon I bolted out the door to head for some Wendy's conveniently forgetting the deck list I printed so I would have to write one out at the store. After a bite to eat I hopped over to the store and meet up with Geoff, Bert and Cody. I pay my entry fee, turn in my deck list and begin scouting. The field looked pretty diverse with no two people playing the same thing as far as I could tell. I end up chatting with Cody some and find out we are only at 15 people, but he says the Recall is still the top prize ... I thought this was pretty cool! Rounds start at around 1:30. My notes aren't perfect but I remember most of it.

Round 1 vs. Darien (GAT)
We're sitting next to Tommy and Bryan. Tommy is piloting an old school PandaBurst deck, which is absolutely awesome since I played that deck in standard and vintage once upon a time. Bryan is fated to be my second round opponent.

Game 1
I mull to 6 and start with a Leyline in play, he keeps his opening 7. Turn 2 sees an Ichorid pop up out of a grave and swing in, causing some brain damage with a cabal therapy (that got shot down by a force of will) on the way out and giving birth to 3 zombies and possibly a returned Titan (I'm fuzzy on this one). He concedes before the onslaught of my army over his already blasted landscape.

Game 2
I mull to 6, he does too but starts with a Leyline in play. I succeed in getting rid of the leyline but have to tap both bazaar and city to do it. He gushbonds into a 20 point tendrils on his next turn.

Game 3
Before beginning Darien says that he "needs me to mull to 1 in order to win the round." He successfully jinxes me and I mull to 1 keeping a Golgari Grave-Troll, he decides to keep his opening grip and plays out a third turn jailer after I draw nothing but therapies and dredgers. He swings in twice as I draw nothing and then gushbonds into a 16 point tendrils for the win. My first Bazaar was more than 30 cards down in the deck, my first answer to the Leyline was still 4 turns away when he won.

Game W-L
1-2-0

Round 2 vs. Bryan (4cc?)

Game 1
I keep my opening grip and draw into a second bazaar on my turn, this doesn't help too much since I don't hit a dredger till turn 4, but its off to the races after that as he hasn't put up any resistance and concedes.

Game 2
I keep my opening grip while he mulls to 5 and starts with leyline. I answer leyline with a charm on turn 2 and begin the madness, alpha striking him down to 3 on my next turn to which he concedes.

3-2-0

Round 3 vs. Chris (Long)
Before I go into this match I would like to say that if Ichorid has a natural predator it is blazing fast combo decks. TPS and Long both have extremely good percentages against Ichorid because they get to goldfish if we don't open with a chalice or leyline. I was very lucky in this round.

Game 1
I mull to 6 and start with a leyline, he mulls to 5 and casts a first turn necro. He goes to 9 off necro on his turn and I begin my prayers and hope for a second turn while piling dredgers into my yard. He combos out on his turn but fizzles at a 16 point tendrils. He goes from 22 to 11 off necro and I get jank on my dredges only putting in 1 ichorid and not seeing any narcomoebas. He can't get out from under his own necro on his next turn and takes himself to 4 after some mana burn. I swing in with ichorid to drop him to 1 and therapy him a couple of times, he concedes.

Game 2
I powder a 7 card hand and keep, starting with Leyline. He mulls to 6 and starts with leyline. He plays a second turn bargain and I scoop.

Game 3
I mull to 5 keeping a hand with bazaar, chalice, unmask x 2 and therapy. He keeps his opening 7 and doesn't Have a leyline. After dropping the chalice and ripping his hand apart with turn 1 unmask and turn 2 therapy I was able to race him to victory. I'm pretty sure that I would have lost turn 1 without the chalice.

Match W-L
2-1-0
Game W-L
5-3-0

Round 4 vs. Bert (Commandeer is Broken)
Bert Kyle the creator of Manaless Ichorid, he is also the one that put forth the philosophy for building the deck that I currently follow. It is fine to give up some of the game 1 percentages in order to make games 2-3 much more winnable. He was not happy to face his baby and was even less happy when it bore Titans to the field and crushed his chances to top 4.

Game 1
Bert starts off the round by saying that he didn't bring any of his ichorid hate in his sideboard today and so I have this almost auto won. What he doesn't remember is that I watched him resolve a cunning wish the round prior and saw leylines and needles. Bert then tries to hex my deck with a voodoo gesture. As you will see Karma bites him in the ass and gives me double bazaar hands both games (and drawing an additional third bazaar in game 2)

We both keep our opening hands (mine has 2 bazaars and I am happy) and turn 3 I dread return a Titan, shutting him out of the game fully.

Game 2
We both keep (I have two bazaars a city and a chain of vapor in hand), he drops Leyline. I bounce it first turn and he replays it turn 3. My second turn puts a third bazaar into my hand after activating the freshly laid one. I charm the leyline turn 4 and cruise in against counterspell.dec. He would have had a much easier time if he had found a pithing needle as the charm would have been more than 6 turns away without the bazaar.

Match W-L
3-1-0
Game W-L
7-3-0

I find out I made Top 4 in third place! I am super excited! Geoff looks at the list at the same time I do and starts cursing. He had one bad match up in all of the top 4 and he has to face it, I chuckle a little and ask him where he wants to sit at.

Top 4: Round 1 vs. Geoff (Tyrant Oath)
I know from my talks with him prior to the tournament that he was playing a version without tormod's crypt in the main, this means I pretty much own this match barring fastbond shenanigans.

Game 1
I mull to 5 and he keeps. He drops a turn 2 fastbond but fizzles with the gush chain which got him to a board position of Oath, Tyrant, fastbond, 3 lands and a mox. I bring forth the 7/10 general and decimate his field. This cinches the game and I end up bringing him from 14 to -3 with an alpha strike of my horde.

Game 2
I mull to five and keep a hand with chalice, bazaar, city, charm and something else (I think it was a powder). He keeps his opening hand and starts with leyline. He drops a mox pearl and U sea and tries to cast oath. That didn't happen like he wanted. My turn I drop chalice and charm the oath. He draws and passes. I bazaar, starting off my game plan. He has another dud turn. I get a narco off dredge and therapy calling force (with 4 bridges in the grave) and seeing Jet, 2x oath, krosan rec, chain of vapor, and (fastbond?). I then dread return titan to destroy his only land, he floats a blue and chains it, I sac a city to chain hos mox pearl. Next turn swings in with a zombie and ichorid with him doing nothing. Next turn he still doesn't see green mana and concedes.

Match W-L

Game W-L
9-3-0

Finals vs. Cody (Drain Tendrils)
At the last tourney I faced Cody in round 1, I got a game loss because one of my cards had fallen out of my library before the tournament began and lost game three after a first turn tinker->colossus, which I bounced and he then went to go brainstorm, yawg will, tinker, colossus. Epic? Yes! Deserving of payback? Yes!

He win the die roll.
Game 1
Darien tells me I need to mull to 0, as does Bert and Cody. I think Darien almost got me to do it again, but Karma was still hungry for some Bert so it evened out and I only had to go down to 3 :P

He keeps a hand of 7 and forces my chalice for 0 pitching a thirst. After four turns of not hitting dredgers I run into a pack of dredgers the turn before Cody tinkers out an 11/11 trampler. I'm fine with this as I put forth and army of zombies and return a 14/14 Grave-Troll lieutenant to lead them to victory. Cody can't get a fast enough clock and dies to the horde.

Game 2
I mull to 6 with a pretty decent hand, he mulls to 6 with a leyline and first turn pithing needle. He then proceeds to goldfish.

Game 3
The crucial game three with Ichorid on the play. The only two ways Cody can win this is to pull off another leyline + needle hand or combo out before my turn 3. I'm relatively ok with this but Cody is an awesome player and knows every way possible to speed up the deck so I am still nervous (plus its the difference between a foil dark ritual or an ancestral recall!).

I mull to 5 with a double bazaar hand and say keep. Cody says he will mulligan, he draws his new hand and repeats himself. I get happy and start poking a little bit of fun saying how my deck is designed to do this, not his. He comments (and correctly) that the majority of my deck is just probabilities and we have a small discussion on how true this is while he shuffles up for his new hand. He draws five and complains that it is an excellent hand if it was up against anyone but ichorid, this further reinforces my image of the deck as the most unfair and abstractly powerful deck in the format. What other deck can cause so many fits for nearly every deck in the format? He draws his new hand of 4 and keeps, playing a turn 0 leyline.

I play city and charm his leyline. Turn 2 I draw into a third bazaar, play one, bazaar getting no dredgers but drawing into a charm. I charm my bazaar and get a second activation. Cody plays crypt and some other stuff that didn't amount to anything for me while I played out three bazaars and didn't hit a dredger till turn 6 or so. Cody's deck is also crapping out on him during this time and I finally hit a dredger around turn 7 or 8. From there it was cake, I guess when you can see 32 cards in a single turn you should be able to win huh? My final attack saw a 6/6 troll and 6 zombies swinging in to win me an ancestral recall.

Match W-L
5-1-0
Game W-L
11-4-0

Notes on my list:
Wasteland and Strip Mine are useless in the main and should be petrified fields. You will never play these lands unless you are no longer using bazaar, which means it is either under pithing needle or it has been wasted. Field is more useful in the second situation and has the same amount of utility in the first.
Sundering Titan is an absolute house. It cinched multiple games for me throughout the day, only once not taking out more than 1 land.
If I were to add in an angel of despair it would be for the darkblast in the main. I would move that to the side for emerald charm.
Wispmares are iffy. The only time you want them is against stax, any other time you want charms instead. Unfortunately you need them for the stax match up or you will never get rid of a leyline.

Props
Cody for hosting the tourney and still putting up the Recall even though it means he took a huge loss.
Bert for chatting with me on Ichorid and other projects.
Darien, Geoff, Bert and Cody for signing Zombie tokens.
Everyone commenting on my pimped out version of Ichorid.
Rob Zombie for his remake of Halloween, which I listened to as I typed this.

Notes on Ichorid
I saw 7 turn 0 leylines in 15 games, technically 7 in 9 games as no one ran them main deck. If Ichorid truly could not interact, or had 0 skill like some people claim I should have lost all of those games. I lost 3 of them, the first 2 were to an extremely fast clock, not leyline. The last one was to needle far more than leyline. If Ichorid was a non-interactive deck there would have been no way for me to beat Chris, where my disruption was the only thing that saved me. Indeed, in my opinion the games with Cody and Bert were the only ones that felt non-interactive and even Bert in game 2 had a lot of interaction with me. Ichorid beats up on reactive control decks like they were children with tasty candy. It can create an army with amazing speed to fend off aggro decks (well, at least ones that don't run 12/12 tramplers) and it runs 8 maindeck discard spells, leyline of the void and chalice of the void to give it a strong game against combo. I hold in my opinion that Manaless Ichorid is the strongest deck prior june 20th. I also fully agree with Cody in that something needs to be done about this deck as it severely warps metagames. If you don't sideboard cards against this deck it is an auto loss for almost everything. So if one person in 50 comes with ichorid you stand a chance of just plain losing a round because you chose the wrong side of "the ichorid bet". Some people have asked me what card needs to go in order to make ichorid still viable but fair. I say this is a no brainer: Bridge From Below needs to be restricted. Bofore this card ichorid was a fair deck. Going back to the sutured ghoul kill would cut its power level in half easily.

So, I wanted to play Sex.dec since I had free entry to this tournament and thought that it could be competitive angainst everything but long. Unfortunately I had to go to may fall back deck, Ichorid, thanks to various slow ebayers. Saturday morning I woke up at 5am and couldn't get back to sleep. So after a shower I decided to put in George's remake of Dawn of the Dead and play some test games of Ichorid versus Becker's posted long list. Halfway through the movie my 360 stopped being able to read the disc, I was rather ****** as I was really into it when it froze (the scene where the baby is being born, it has always tugged on my heartstrings). I spend the next 15 minutes cleaning off the fingerprints and dried on gunk from the last douchebag that I let borrow it and put it back in. I suddenly get the great idea that cutting the maindeck Darkblast for a Street Wraith would be an awesome way to randomly increase my win by a turn, especially against Long, and it would still pitch to unmask and could even be Ichorid food. I then proceed to change out the card in my physical deck and print off an updated deck list to turn in and sit down to watch the movie. This mistake went a long way to losing me a match as you will see later on. Around noon I head over to Jimmy John's to grab a sub and head over to the card shop. When I get there only Cody and Chris are there for the tournament. I'm not too worried as there was still an hour left and a lot of hype for the tournament. Well, an hour later we only have 16 people ... again ... so we are forced into doing a cut to top 4 ... again. Sad Panda.

Round 1 vs. Andrew (Control Slaver)
I remember seeing Andrew at the last tournament where he showed up but really didn't want to play. I am glad he changed his mind this time. He wins the die roll and elects to play.

Game 1
He keeps his opening 7 and I powder @ 7 and mull to 4 keeping a gassy hand with bazaar, leyline, ichorid and a dredger. I start off with a turn 0 leyline.
He starts off with volc -> welder and passes. I immediately put him on Control slaver and am happy as can be. Even without Leyline I can race the conventional builds of Control Slaver all day long and I am already a step ahead. I drop Bazaar and draw into a chalice, discard Ichorid, dredger and random card. I play chalice @ 0 and pass.
He plays a volc and swings with welder. I dredge on my upkeep and draw phase hitting 1 bridge, 2 narcomoebas and another ichorid. I swing with the ichorid and try to dread return a troll to get an even more imposing board position. He drains the dread return. I am left with 3 zombies.
He draws and play a sol ring, burns for 3, swings with welder and passes. I go about my game plan and swing in with 3 zombies and 2 ichorids bringing him to 2. I then return a 9/9 troll to get out 6 new zombies, making absolutely sure that there are no outs for him.
He scoops.

Game 2
I side out 3 petrified fields, 1 Titan, 4 chalice, 1 thug, 1 unmask, 1 imp, 1 street wraith for 1 wispmare, 2 gemstone mine, 4 chain, 4 charm.
He keeps his opening 7 as do I. I have double bazaar, city and chain in hand and am feeling confidant about this game.
He starts off with mox jet, mox ruby, volcanic and tinker->colossus, pass. I go City->chain colossus, pass.
He scrolls for ancestral and casts it, pass. I therapy naming TfK seeing Sea, S. Scrying, EtW, Tolarian Academy, volc, colossus. I drop bazaar and put 2 trolls into the yard next to an ichorid.
He plays a volcanic and passes. I dredge a lot and swing with ichorid. I have 3 bridges and 2 ichorids as wells as multiple unused therapies in the grave.
He scoops.

Round 2 vs. Chris (Control Slaver)
I remember playing Chris in the second round of the last tournament where he was playing a storm deck. He was an amazing player with a lot of skill so I was a little nervous about the rematch. I win the die roll and elect to play.

Game 1
He mulls to 5 as we make conversation and I keep my opening 7 with bazaar, unmask, city, therapy x 2, powder, and chalice.
I start off by pitching a therapy to unmask seeing platinum angel, welder, volcanic, and some other stuff that I didn't write down. I take Platinum Angel. This was the mistake that ultimately lost me the game. My thinking was that I could keep him off an active welder long enough to win, especially with the chalice @ 0 that would be coming down. Instead I should have taken a tutor or just the welder and started using bazaar, but no I gave him the means to win without ever having to do anything more than cast a one drop creature. I then play city and therapy the welder out of his hand off the city, put down chalice @ 0 and pass. He proceeds to play a volcanic and the welder he ripped off the top Becker style.
I scramble to get bazaar working but don't hit dredgers until my turn three and he answers with a demonic for sol ring with an active welder and I scoop.

Game 2
I side out: Street Wraith, 1 titan, 2 fields, 4 unmask!, 4 chalice!!
I side in: 4 charm, 4 chain, 2 wispmare! and 3 mines.
He keeps his opening hand and I powder 7 and keep my second 7 that includes 2x bazaar, city, chain, leyline, cabal therapy and powder(?).
I play out leyline and bazaar, put a dredger (thug?) in the grave and pass. He plays delta->sea->ancestral, discarding tendrils and island.
I play out bazaar #2 and see squat with my dredges and pass. He plays some number of spells including a mox and land->jailer and passes w/ 2 cards in hand.
I play city and pass. He draws and passes. EOT I chain jailer.
I Dredge in 3 narcomoeabas (this turn) and 3 bridges (over the course of the game). I hard cast therapy naming Jailer, seeing Thirst, tinker and pyroclasm. I dread return troll as a 11/11 and then return a titan putting him on two moxen. I flash back another therapy and name pyroclasm. This is another mistake as tinker was so much more of a threat. He proceeds to rip a land off the top and cast tinker->platz.
I beat him to -10 life while searching for a chain of vapor. He brings me to 11 before I find it.
I am really upset with myself for almost handing another game to him and completely overlook that he has tendrils in the deck now.

Game 3
He keeps his hand of 7 while I mull to 2.
He starts off with sapphire->u. sea->ancestral pass. I start off with bazaar into double grave-troll.
He untaps and goes through the motions to storm me out with a 20 point tendrils. Had I bothered to think about it I would have dearly like to have those chalices back in as well as the unmasks. I would have boarded out the titans, dread returns and some dredgers instead.

Round 3 vs. Bert (Manaless Ichorid)
As soon as I saw Bert playing Ichorid in the first round I knew that including Street Wraith into my build was going to bite me in the ass if I ever played him. The Ichorid mirror is a very wierd game where game 1 you both mull to leyline and race to cities to cast your thugs, moebas and imps off. If you don't have darkblast to sneak a kill in against an opposing imp you will probably lose the game. Guess what that meant for me...

Game 1
We both keep our opening 7 and drop leyline.
Bert wins th race to the city of brass, with me catching up 2 turns later after he already played a thug and narcomoeba. I have to dig through my library to find another 2 mana sources to put out the imp in my hand. Imp goes down and I'm in top decking mode. Bert swings in with a nacomoeba and thug and proceeds to darkblast my imp. I effectively lost all hope in this game at this point. I try to put up more of a resistance but am met by another darkblast on a second imp. . I eventually lose to an alpha strike from two imps on his side of the field.

Game 2
Side out: 4 chalice, 2 titan, 3 field, 4 unmask.
Side in: 3 wispmare, 3 mine, 3 chain, 4 charm.

I mull to 6 and he mulls to some number I didn't write down (5?)
I play out bazaar and dump an ichorid, dredger and something else. He plays bazaar dumping bridge, ichorid, something else.
I dredge into good stuff and swing in with ichorid, getting me 2 tokens and removing his bridge. He dredges and puts in an ichorid swings and gets no tokens but removes my bridges.
I dredge up a moeba and 1-2 more bridges in addition to playing out all 4 ichorids. He darkblasts one of the ichorids and I beat for 13. He dredges into 2x moeaba and multiple ichorids in play. He then goes on to darkblast one of my moebas and remove his own bridges from the graveyard, putting him at 1 thanks to the city damage. He then scoops and we see if there was any way for him to win/stall that turn. Results were inconclusive.

Game 3
He mulls to 4 and wills me to do the same. His luck has turned around since the last tournament and I end up mulling to 2.
His turn 3 sees him rushing in with an ichorid and 2 moeabas with me having hit no dredgers yet. He proceeds to dread return a 20/20 grave-troll and get 12 zombies out of the deal.
I scoop, putting me out of top 4 contention.

Round 4 vs. Mike (UW Fish)
Mike was a pretty nice guy. I has seen him earlier in the day playing against Cullin, so I knew he was playing UW Fish. He was a pretty cool guy and we had a nice conversation on the local vintage scene during and after the match.

Game 1
I powder 7 and keep he keeps his opening grip.
I didn't write down who went first but I do know that used a first turn heath->tundra that confirmed what I had seen earlier. I also know that he scooped when my board position reached 8 zombies 3 ichorids and a titan while his was limited to a single mox.

Game 2
He mulls to 6 and comments that he should probably mull again. I rejoice a little inside because so far anyone who has said that and not been a bold faced liar has lost. I mull to 5 and keep.
He plays heat->tundra mox->meddling mage naming dread return. I start using bazaar a lot.
He beats with MM and plays out faerie conclave. I dredge a bunch, get 3 ichorids into play, chain the mage and bring him to 10, I then cast dread return on titan which he misdirects to a golgari thug.
He untaps and beats with the conclave. I figure he can't have anything left since he only has one mana untapped and I was right. I swing in for 16 with thug, 3 zombies and 3 ichorids.

Game 3 (for fun)
This game was rather uneventful as he starts with leyline and has 3 counter spells to protect it. I die to the beats and congratulate him for protecting leyline better than anyone else I have ever played.

2-2-0

Notes:
My games with Chris and Bert taught me excellent lessons on deck building, side boarding and play skills. If I had a time machine I would go back and have five minutes alone with myself saturday morning and beaten some sense into me. Nonetheless, these are lessons which I won't soon forget and ones that can be applied throughout my magic career so I am very happy that I attended the tournament and am greatly looking forward to the next one. It is still up in the air on whether or not I will play ichorid at that one.

Props
Cody for organizing these tournaments. I have always had fun and enjoyed the experience whether I scrubbed out or not.
Geoff for stepping up to the plate and taking over for Cody as he goes on to the next stage in his life.
Everyone who attended for being a fun crowd of people to spend a Saturday with.
Bert for loving Commandeer so much our sides hurt.
Everyone who signed a zombie token (especially Ben, who's alteration looks really cool).

Slops
Everyone who didn't attend. I can't really understand why we didn't have a higher turn out for a tournament where you only had to top 8 and you break even.

Other Stuff
Cody, it was a blast having you around and I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

Having been to a bachelor party last night and having been drinking with friends through most of the day today I apologize for any mistakes in memory, grammer, spelling etc. I have tried to clean it up as much as possible however, seeing as how I need to wake up around 6am tomorrow I will post this now and probably never edit it again. Thank you and good night.

I am glad that Mana-less Ichorid has made it up here...even if its inventor was banned from the boards.
John is still around last I heard, he just has another name. I am still waiting to hear his tournament report on his man plan ichorid.
Vintage Deckbuilding-Your First Vintage Tournament

John?

I thought Steven Mennendian (sp) and Bert Kyle were responsible for the Ichorid decks.
John Matthias (Islands currently, formerly going by his name) was arguably the first to formally put the deck Friggorid forth, Steven Menendian (
Smmennenenenenen) was the first to make the deck actually work in vintage (both manaless and mana'd versions) and Bert Kyle (Meadbert) was the one that has tuned Manaless Ichorid into what it is today while Eric Dupris (ELD) (I get the feeling that I spelled everyone's name wrong) was the first to post a viable list for Mana'd Ichorid (Tommy Kolowith (TK) was the first to make it successful however, he has decided to withhold the list he used to win the TMD Open with).

So that is the convoluted history of the deck ... I guess.
Vintage Deckbuilding-Your First Vintage Tournament
Yes, that IS a picture of me that I am using for my avatar.
Huh. Interesting. I thought Islands only did Standard / Type 2 stuff.
Mathias made came up with idea way way before it became popular. I argued with him that LLotV would hose his deck. It turns out I was right but the deck still performed well His arguement was that at the time nobody played LLotV, except me, and that nobody ever would.
To be fair, the only reason people play LLotV (even in their side boards) is because of this deck. There isn't another deck around that couldn't be fought equally or better with a different card.

PS. Though I haven't added it to the list of winning decks yet a mana dredge split for first (winning on tie breakers) of a 90 person tournament. What I found interesting was that he chose to run no dread returns or dr targets. I also like the inclusion of force of will, basically turning the deck into dead man fish.

Also, after testing I believe that mana denial builds of ichorid are the only way to go and have an appreciable chance of winning tournaments (this only applies to manaless as I have stopped testing mana versions a long time ago). Running petrified fields comes at too high of an opportunity cost in the current metagame. I would replace them, darkblast and 1 thug for 4 wastes and 1 strip if I were to play tomorrow. If anyone sees flaws in this feel free to share them.

At the end of the gush meta I decided to go to fields because I believed that wastes would run rampant in every top deck, this has shown to be far from accurate and I will go back to my stronger mana denial strategy.

So the 315 person Erovino 3 event ended a little while ago and the results certainly interested me. This is largely due to the fact that the top two decks that split for first being two of the most derided decks in competitive vintage, these decks being Manaless Ichorid and Goblins. Yes, you heard me right. Goblins and Ichorid won a 315 person event!

Absolutely awesome!

I guess I will need to make DtB thread for goblins soon Anyway, here is the list:

Manaless Ichorid
4 Bazaar of Baghdad

This was a no proxy event and filled with fish (mostly UR). Also interesting is that at least one fully powered long deck made it into top 8 and lost to ichorid. Have I said how much I love the boogie man lately?

Im fairly new to the vintage scene and this is the one deck i liked that I can affor (minus teh bazaars of course) Im planning on taking this to a vintage tournament soon and I was wondering is the starcity games list the most optimal or is the one in the op with petrified fields and whatnot better/more consistent?

Also, how consistent is this deck really? Im probably jjust mulliginning horribly but i never seems to get umask or cabal therapy even casted (my meta currently is sphere effect crazy with my main opponents being metalworker.deck and tezzeret)

also does tanglewire, smokestacks, and ichorid use the stack? if so, does my opponent chose during my upkeep how stacks/ tanglewire stack?

The best version to play right now would be mana'd ichorid. This list looks promising:
If People want lists...Ill Post my list...

// ICHORID //

Creatures -

4-Golgari Grave Troll
4-Golgari Thug
4-Stinkweed Imp
3-Ichorid
4-Narcomoeba
3-Fatestitcher
2-Cephalid Sage
1-Revielark ( TO FREAKIN GOOD)
1-Flame-Kin Zealot

3-Dread Return
1-Ancestral Recall
4-BreakThrough
4-Cabal Therapy
4-Bridge From Below
1-Lions Eye Diamond
1-Black Lotus
1-Mox Sapphire
1-Lotus Petal

Land//

4-Bazaar Of Baghdad
4-City Of Brass
2-Gemstone Mine
4-Cephalid Coluseum

thats the main deck, and the sideboard hasnt changed in months.

4-chain of vapor
4-pithing needle
4-contagion
and 3 ancient tomb.....which is the only slot i would mess with...any ideas? LOL

well, thats my list...

The manaless versions just lose too often to vault key for them to be good right now.

Also, how consistent is this deck really? Im probably jjust mulliginning horribly but i never seems to get umask or cabal therapy even casted (my meta currently is sphere effect crazy with my main opponents being metalworker.deck and tezzeret)

With the mana'd versions it is easier to fight through a sphere, but still not completely easy. Often though, if your opponent is playing mud you can just build an army of zombies and ichorids to swing in. Most tez decks that I have seen do not run spheres, but the plan is pretty much the same if they do. Just remember to keep a land in hand when you go to town dredging if they happen to put out a sphere so you can still cast dread return.

also does tanglewire, smokestacks, and ichorid use the stack? if so, does my opponent chose during my upkeep how stacks/ tanglewire stack?

The triggers go onto the stack in APNAP (active play – non-active player) order; this means that his smoke and tangle triggers will resolve (in whatever way he wishes) before your ichorids have the chance to come into play.

Thanks a lot the list is curently winning turn 1-3 consistently and its nuts. I cut the lark for river kelpie though
Why only three ichorids? shouldnt this deck play 4 always?
also I'm debating my sideboard currently and I know 4 Chain of Vapor is an auto include nd with the rise of vault key we need artifact hate so 4 Pithing Needle and I'm thinking 3 ancient grudge as a playable card even if I dredge into it to handle explosives/powder keg/vault/etc.

Heres my list
4 Stinkweed Imp
4 Golgari Grave-Troll
4 Golgari Thug
2 Darkblast
4 Narcomoeba
4 Ichorid
2 Cephalid Sage
1 River Kelpie
1 Angel of Despair
1 Ancestor's Chosen
1 Flamekin Zealot
2 Fatestitcher

4 Bridge From Below
3 Breakthrough
3 Dread Return
4 Cabal Therapy
4 Unmask

4 Cephalid Coliseum
4 Bazaar of Baghdad
4 City of Brass

I'm debating on cutting a darblast and a city of brass for two Dryad Arbor or a Darkblast for the 4th breakthrough, any thoughts?

In the ancient days before bridge it was true that you had to run 4, in a current manaless build it is advisable to run 4 but in a current mana'd build I would be comfortable with 3-4. The reason is that mana'd ichorid sees far more cards in less time, giving it the same chance to hit the proper amount of free creatures to win as the manaless builds.

Don't forget about ingot chewer as possible artifact hate, since it will trigger bridge.

You need to run 4 breakthrough. I would also suggest finding room for 2 careful studies. Otherwise the deck is not as explosive as it needs to be.

i fear (more) maindeck hate is really gonna start poppin up.
I'm sure eventually people will actually start testing with/against the deck and figuring out how to beat a decent pilot instead of just blowing it off as a skill-less, unattractive pile. Fortunately, even the recent successes of ichorid in the states probably won't do this.

People are stubborn, they hate having to change their decks to accommodate something they have no respect for. I doubt that we will see an increase in main deck hate from decks that didn't already run it. Besides, some of the most effective hate is either unplayable in most decks or mostly dead in other matches.

This is my current list. Sadistic Hypnotist is nuts. He's mean't to win g1 then boarded out. Some matches he's worth keeping in, though. So without further adieu, Ichorid 09:

forgive my ignorance, but what's the point of Arbor Dryad?

It is a free non-token creature that can fuel cabal therapy, dread return and bridge from below. Since it is also a forest it can be fetched with fetch lands as well.

I like ichorid/dredge decks but what do you think is the best one right now. Especially with the new core set coming out. Plus with all the new rules going to be implemented. Will the ichorid/dredge decks get affected?
So far none of the new rules changes have affected dredge at all. The new combat rules might actually help dredge more than hurt is as it uses its attack phase in a rather straight forward manner.

As far as which is best right now, my testing has shown that either fatestitcher dredge or wasteland dredge are the best ones right now. I don't know what cards are in the new set yet so I can't make predictions for that.

Apparently Tezzerat decks have been wrecking havoc in my area. What do you think are the chances of Ichorid/dredge deck winning against them? Can you give me a sample deck of a good Ichorid/dredge deck? I want to build one for an upcoming tourney. thanks.
in a random meta, is manaless or mana ichorid better to bring?
Josh "war" Monks. Team Jace, Seattle
Aver semi-mana'd version that runs pithing needles in the main would probably be best for an unknown meta. Semi-mana'd meaning a version that runs 4-7 mana producing lands/permanents main deck.

I'm still finding that my old wasteland version performs the best overall, including the new fatestitcher builds. It just needed to be tweaked to include more generalized answers like needle.
Vintage Deckbuilding-Your First Vintage Tournament
Yes, that IS a picture of me that I am using for my avatar.
Personally, I think that the best build for a blind meta would be manaless, perhaps some riftstone portal tricks.

Even fully powered mana-ed ichorid has weaknesses that manaless doesn't. And the things that hose manaless hose ichorid with mana just as badly.

Two quick questions:

1) What is the drawback of playing Mana'd Ichorid over Manaless? I read the primer and have tested both, yet I have almost always had more success with Mana'd.

2) What is Fatesticher used for exactly? I have toyed with him a bit to moderate success, but there seems to be something I'm missing.

Chalice @ 1 wrecks mana ichorid. You get cut off of all your spells, which was the only reason to play mana ichorid.

I'm going to assume no, but is there anyway to make this deck a little cheaper, like with no Bazaar's or is it just not possible?
I'm going to assume no, but is there anyway to make this deck a little cheaper, like with no Bazaar's or is it just not possible?

the deck clocks about 50 turns faster with bazaar. there is no way to take bazaar out of this deck, unless you play legacy dredge, which costs about as much as one bazaar, so...

but honestly, dredge is the cheapest deck in vintage, the only card that costs more than $15 or so is bazaar, compare to decks running the entire P9, 7 fetches, 10 duals, 4 forces, 4 manadrains, time vault, mana crypt, library, etc. dredge is for sure the budget deck for vintage
Josh "war" Monks. Team Jace, Seattle
I disagree, sinimin. Dredge is NOT budget. It is cheaper than many other option by a lot, but fish or goblins or monoblue are all a lot cheaper than dredge. Sure, you can make them more expensive, but they can be playable on a budget. Dredge is going to be at least a grand for a playable list.
