What is Painter's Combo and how is it played?

Painter's Combo is a compact, two cards, 6 mana colorless combo that can be fit into any kind of deck. The original successful versions of the deck used red elemental blast and pyroblast as protection for the combo and as 1 mana vindicates after painter's servant hit play (naming blue). Most current versions still follow this method, exploiting the traditionally blue based metagame of vintage.

The deck is played out like a control-combo style deck, attempting to prevent the opponent from winning until you have assembled your combo. With 6-8 1 mana counter spells in addition to force of will and sometimes mana drain this isn't too difficult to do. The combo is painter's servant + grindstone. Once you have both in play you simply activate grindstone and your opponent has his deck completely milled, causing him to lose the next time he would draw a card.

I like this..dirty as it is I like it.
What does dirty mean in that statement?

This is one of the few/only vintage decks that hasn't had more than a year to be optimised so I still expect someone to find minor tweaks over time to fine tune the deck. As it stands though I can't really find any fat to trim without completely changing the shell.

Red Blast painter and Stax painter are the two strongest versions that I have seen. It looks more like a meta and play style choice as to which one you should currently go with.

Anyone else have thoughts on the deck?

Love the deck!
The first time I saw the painters servent was in a draft, lucky me I got a Oona, Queen of the Fae to go with it.:P
An FYI to the people who don't read the Drain, there is a new build of painter created by Demonic Attorney that uses thoughtcast as one of its primary draw cards. I personally love the deck and it has reached into my top slots for playing in a tournament (alongside blue stax and ichorid). Here is the list he used:

Too bad he lost to Rich with Remora.

Was there :O

Flux is a ***** eh?
NO LOTUS MUTHA ****IN' SHOPS BURN'T DOWN THE MUTHA ****IN' GENCON
Indeed. But that is why god invented the mulligan to a good hand plan. Of which, according to DA's tournament report, he chose not to follow.

Both decks are amazingly cool and powerful though.

So you're opponent puts Gaea's Blessing in his deck and becomes unmillable.
Or you could respond with stifle, or maybe even crypt their graveyard away in response. In practice, blessing does little to stop the deck. Even if it does somehow slow the grindstone plan you can still tinker for a giant robot and have more counters than any other deck to protect it with.

Isn't Thirst restricted?
Yep, but it wasn't when the list was posted. Filling three slots is pretty big, though.

What do yall think should replace it?

Once the list already runs FoF and Gifts...

I'd run 3x Thoughtcast... it is really good when you have a bunch of artifacts like this deck.

Yes, that IS a picture of me that I am using for my avatar.

i know that it's expensive and probably not the best way to take care of gaia's blessings and darksteel collosus (which ruins a painter/stone combo the worst forcing the game into a draw) but people tend not to put 4 darksteels or 4 gaia's blessings in a deck. In my painter/stone casual deck I have jester's cap. maybe sideboard one or something that does similar if you know they have anti-mill cards in the deck.

No one is really worried about being decked. Very few decks run Gaea's Blessing in the Sideboard, and only oath runs it in the MB. DSC is seen fewer and fewer times, but not to combat this deck.

Extirpate works.. Tormods Crypt... J Cap... etc.

Also remeber that if they have less than three cards in the deck ancestral becomes a kill spell.  When I played painter it was not uncommon to see dsc, so mill them->will->ancestral targeting the opponent was a fairly common play for me.

The problem I have with Servant is it's largely outclassed by Time Vault. The big upside is that it's more redundant and you play with MD red blasts.

Well besides the ancestral maybe the deck could run Jace as another card to force them to draw out. You dont need to always have him reach 10...you could just let them draw there dsc on ur turn then say go. Just a thought.

Jace is kind of eww.

You're already running trinket Mages. If you could find room for Tinker and Time Vault I would say 1 key would be worth it.
