Ironlightsaber Customs

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL043.jpg)

It's been over year since I posted any images of my custom figs so I figure it's about time to post some more. Some were posted before, but I included them so all my mods would appear in a single thread. I just got this camera and it really doesn't do the figs justice but I figure some pics are better than no pics at all. I hope you enjoy.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL001.jpg)

"Admiral Ackbar" was one of my first mods I ever made and I got 4 stitches in my thumb making him. The exacto knife went right through the plastic and down to the bone in my thumb. You might be able to tell which mods were made while I had stitches :P. I made "Bespin Han" as a stand-in fig for nimzomitch until he pulled a RS Han. It was made from a Naboo Soldier and is rather blocky because it was only meant to be a stand in piece. The "Dead Rebel" was made by cutting up a Rebel Trooper, repositioning the pieces and gluing them back to the base.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL002.jpg)

These two E-Web Blasters are not mods but were made from scratch. I used plastic pieces left over from models, bits of metal, half of a Gonk Power Droid and some Sculpey to create them. I also made stat cards for it and other items that I hope to post for others to use. The stats and rules cards are from the Ultimate Mission books, except the rules on jumping which is a mix of all the different UM rules cleaned up into one.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL003.jpg)

Here are some modded "Scout Troopers-Running Toward the Fight". I just cut them at the waist, rotated them a little, glued it and then sculpted the waist to look correct. The arms were cut and pinned as well. The "Dead Trooper" fig was made like the above "Dead Rebel".

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL004.jpg)

These are my modded Imperial Officers-"Death Star Officer" was made from an Imperial Officer body with a Rebel Trooper head. "Imperial Officer-Being Choked" was made the body of the above mentioned Rebel Trooper with an Imperial Officer's head. "Imperial Officer-At Attention" was made from Tarkin's body with an Imperial officer's head. Tarkin's head was used for a different mod that you'll see later on.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL005.jpg)

This is a "Twi'lik Sith" with a couple of droid friends from the Death Star. The body of the "Twi'lik Sith" was made from a Klatooninian Enforcer with the head of a Twi'lik Scoundrel. I gave him two lightsabers and Sith tattoos on his lekku to add some personality. "The Death Star Droid" is just an R2 repainted to look like the droid found on the Second DeathStar and the "Interrogation Droid" was made completely from Sculpey. I included the front of the stat card I made for reference.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL006.jpg)

Here's my "Darth Vader-Who's Your Daddy?". The fig was made from RS Darth Vader-Dark Jedi. The scene it's from is still one of the best in all movies. I know that his lightsaber was off when he held his hand out to Luke but I decided to keep it on for the mini.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL007.jpg)

These are a couple of modded Tuskens. The two with staffs were cut, adjusted, pinned and sculpted into different poses. The Tusken on the Bantha and the Tusken on the left were cut at the waist and switched. I've seen that other people have done this switch as well; it's quite simple to do and I highly recommend it.

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IL008.jpg)

The "Oola-Doomed Dancer" was a Twi'lek Bodygaurd that was completely cut apart at all the joints, pinned and readjusted. I used the staff for the chain and positioned it to look like Jabba was pulling on it. "Bib Fortuna" was a Twi'lek Scoundrel and I hope that WOTC will make one with a CE that improves Jabba. "Boba Fett" was a CS Clone Trooper that I made as a stand-in until I finally got one (I ended up having to buy it).

I think it looks more like something that came out from a Boushh with some kind of mandalorian or royal guard's helmet, mixed together

It is the front off of a Boush fig with a Sith Trooper helmet. I was lucky enough to have gotten ahold of a second Boush and it was quite the trick to get the mask on properly.

Thanks for the kind feedback everyone. My newest article is up on the front page and is a step by step guide on how to repaint the 181st fig from IE so that it looks correct. Here's what the finished version looks like--

IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/Article_13_Image_8.jpg)

I tried to make it as basic as possible so anyone can make him, while keeping the details there. Enjoy!

I used paper. I drew the design in pencil and then painted it. When it was dry, I shaped the curves using the shaft of a paint brush. After I got it into the shape I wanted, I then super glued it to the post and covered the flag with a wash of 2/3rds white glue and 1/3 water to seal it and help it keep it's shape.

I finished the Dark Sith Apprentice and will get him and some more customs I made for my rpg game up as soon as I have the chance to take the photos.

In the meantime please check out the new on-going thread I have made in rpg section, The Praxem, about the game I am currently running. There is a lot of cross over stuff I designed that can be used in both the mini and rpg games.
Let me know what you think of it. Thanks

I wanted to get these up sooner but I had taken a family trip to Chicago and when I arrived I accidently left my carryon bag with my camera on the subway. In my defense, I was carrying two full suitcases, a second carryon bag and a car seat while trying to make sure my other eight family members got off the subway safely. Oh well, I have a replacement now and finally had a chance to catch up on taking pics of my customs.

First up is a pair of smaller customs. The first is a repaint of an R4 droid that I made for the RPG game I run. He was the mechanic on the first ship that the party flew on together as a group.

    IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/R4-Y9.jpg)

The second is a little baddie I made to be the nemesis of one of the players who made his own species for the game. I wanted something that tied into his character and at the same time was something new but would fit into the the Star Wars universe. I had a pair of wings from a D&D imp and attached them and gave him a repaint. It was quite the surprise for the whole party when what they though was a Chadra-fan with a pair of sticks on his back spread his wings and flew off with the data card he helped steal. I still haven't thought up a name for this character yet.

    IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/SithImp.jpg)

I made this one a awhile back but didn't take a pic. This is the Clone Commander who is hunting the entire group and will be a thorn in their sides for many adventures to come. It is a regular clone commander with elements from the Odd-Ball fig. His name is Clone Commander Dust but because of his history of sending his troops to die he has earned the nickname of "Clone Commander Death".

    IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/CCDust.jpg)

This next one is going to be in an upcoming adventure and my players haven't even seen her yet. I wanted a noble/administrator character and wanted her to standout on the playing field. I didn't really have a color scheme in mind when I started but I was really happy with the outcome.

    IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/DuteneSeara.jpg)

And finally is the Vader Sith Apprentice from the Force Unleashed that I have been showing images of his development in his finished form. Enjoy!

Always enjoyable to see your fantastic work, the Commander stands out though, as an incredible figure.
The sheer amount of weaponry loaded onto that guy... whew, I know my group would think a bit before facing off with him!

All great customs, keep 'em coming!
"All the world will be your enemy, Prince of a Thousand enemies. And when they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you; digger, listener, runner, Prince with the swift warning. Be cunning, and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed." -Frith, Watership Down

The commander was pretty simple to make. It is just elements of the Odd-Ball fig combined with the standard clone commander.

It's been great working on customs and painting minis for fun. Almost done with the customs I'm making from the "orphans" I picked up from Hothie a month or so ago and I will put up pics of them and the group shot of all the customs from the customizing article series very soon.

Making the templates for the missing factions has been on my list of "things to do" for a while. Unfortunately my "things to do" list is a very long list and making template cards is not a priority. Plus the couple of times I went to do them a new set with new factions came out and pushed making them back to the bottom.

I think that myname has made templates of those factions. You might want to search the threads and see if you can PM him about his templates or find the thread they are in if you are in a hurry.

Speaking of those projects--I have been busy working on them and here are some images of the final results. I know these are not Star Wars minis but they are miniatures and I thought I would share what I have been working on in my spare time. ;)

    IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IMG_1797A.jpg)

Several years ago I was at a garage sale and picked up this classic board game from Milton Bradely called HeroQuest that was made in the late '80s/early '90s and was discontinued shortly there after. It's like a simplified version of D&D and is fun to play if you get the knack for a dungeon crawl but don't feel like playing a full RPG game.

The game sat in the game closet for years I never played it. The group of guys I spend Friday nights gaming with (we play all sorts of games from SWM to classics like chess to wacky board games) had run through all the games we normally played and I remembered that I had this at home. I checked through it and surprisingly all the pieces were there but unpainted.

After playing the game once I decided that I would test my skills at painting a mass group of figs. I week later I was finished and it does make the game even more enjoyable having fully painted pieces. If you find a used complete copy of the game and it's cheap I recommend picking it up.

It was a challenge to stay focus on painting several pieces over and over again and not rush through them. I wanted the colors to look like the box art and vary up the goblins and such so that they would look the similar but not identical. It was good practice for what I was going to work on next.

My second large miniature project is another game that was made around the same time and has since been discontinued as well. It's called SpaceHulk and is basically a board game version of the movie Aliens (the second, kick ass Aliens movie). One player plays a group of marines and the other plays a never ending swarm of aliens.

I had this game back in the day, never finished painting the miniatures (I think I got as far as priming them) and when my wife and I moved into our first apartment I sold it for extra cash to help pay for the deposit. I regretted selling it ever since and my long time gaming friend never let me live it down. Finally after many years and watching many ebay auctions I found a nice complete second edition of the game and bought it.

Since it took so long to get the game again I decide that I would make sure that I painted all the pieces that went with it.

So here are the scary aliens--

    IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IMG_1798A.jpg)

and the space marines that fight them--

    IMAGE(http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c142/ironlightsaber/IMG_1799A.jpg)

Finding a complete game is hard and not cheap but if you can get your hands on one I highly recommend it; not only can you play the original game but the tiles are great to have for SWM. The great thing about the game is that the board is made of interlocking tiles that are 1" squares of rooms and hallways and they work great for SWM. And the rules of the game (with just a little tweaking) are pretty basic and can be used for mass combat in the SWM RPG game when playing out large battles with only grunts.

Hope you enjoyed the little departure down memory lane and next time I will have more SWM customs. Promise.

    Hey thats warhammer 40K.
    I love that game.

    did you paint those yourself?

Totally time consuming isnt it XD

takes like 2 hours per figure.

Any chance I cold get the recipe for your VSA Sith Lord?
The VSA Sith Lord as a lot of little parts from a lot of different pieces.

The main parts include the legs and lower torso of RS Han, the right arm of a CS Dark Side Acolyte, the left arm of a RS Twi'lek Scoundrel, the upper torso of U Dark Side Marauder, the head of a BH Mandalorian Soldier and the front breath mask of a BH Boushh.

Add in some green stuff, some red saber blades and bits and pieces from the scrap box.

Paint to correct color. Bake at 400 for several hours of labor and serve to the public.

What a busy time it has been. Between my first GenCon and getting things set up with this new site, writing the previews for the next set, and everything else going on I have been working non-stop. Still, I have managed to get a couple of customs started and a few others done. Wink

First up is a simple repaint that I made for a new baddie in my RPG game. I had an extra Moff Calixte and wanted to have a bad guy that wasn't a bruiser and was more of a tactical thinker. I redid the hair and face and added some subtle changes to the outfit color. The heroes in the game have seen her but have not met face to face with this dangerous foe.

The other custom I have recently finished was for one of the players, Ad. Palleaon, of his character Nix Felleaon (I wonder if they are related? Tongue out). Jim's character is a mix of Han Solo, Boba Fett, a pirate, gun slinger and pilot. He had a really good idea of what he wanted his character to look like and even figured out what pieces to use from different figs.

After discussing certain details that he wanted and what elements he had to have (dual blasters, the coat and the armor on parts of his body) I got to work. I wanted to change it up from the original pose and make an exciting piece that would be easy to identify on the table and convey the action associated with the character.

I hope to make customs of all the characters in my game but that also brings up the issue of players really getting disappointed if their character dies (which has almost happen three times). Nimzomitch has created a fig of his unusual character and I hope to get that posted up here soon. I'm currently working on a custom for one of the players of his character on a swoop bike that he earned in battle. When I get that and some others done I'll get them up here.
