I just finished reading the players hand book and i am still confused about the "powers" you get to use. the part that confuses me is when a power says "Hit: 1W + modifier".....what does the 1, 2 3W mean???

W is the damage your weapon does. So, a power that does 3W+Strength, used with a 1d10 weapon and an 18 STR would do 3d10+4 (you only add modifiers liek STR bonus ONCE, even if you're doing multiples of weapon damage, which takes a bit of getting used to from 3.5).

It's a little confusing that this isn't explicitly spelled out in the section on Powers at the front of the PHB, but check the Combat section in the back, specifically Page 276, for the full rundown on how to figure this stuff.
