Idea for "old-school" tiefling PC

Tiefling character concept: Your tiefling has take the drastic step of cutting off his/her own tail. Perhaps you are filled with self-loathing. Perhaps you are scared of your diabolical heritage and this was a (reckless) way of denying your dark side. Perhaps you grew up in a racist community and got tired of sticking out and want to blend in easier with the crowd (you may have also shaved down your horns too, ala Hellboy). Maybe it just an accident, a war-wound, or just an embarrassing incident while being intoxicated. There might even be a club or cult of tieflings who did this for whatever reason.

Since the tail is pretty much fluff, this should have no affect on game mechanics. Obviously, this character concept does not fit with the PC that embraces his/her nature.
I would assume a tiefling raised predominantly by humans. Maybe a foundling taken in by the temple, that was regarded as a bad move by the people, who grumble but didn't do anything about it, since they liked the temple most of the time. However, once the tiefling grew up, they encountered a lot of bullying and insults from non-priests.

A tiefling who had a one night stand with a human would also work, since a human and tiefling always produces a tiefling.

Or a tiefling married a human, and then proceeded to kick the bucket. The living parent remarried to a human. While the two probably accepted the tiefling, the rest of the world, including siblings, did not. Maybe the tiefling was better at something then one of the human children of the step-parent and the living parent, causing a lot of jealousy.

The tail may have been forcefully cut off, or cut off once the priests found the child to help them be accepted by the human culture.

I didn't think of that, but ya, tails could also be cut off at birth or childhood, not just adulthood. Particularily in far flung isolated villages, based on some old tradition, a religious or cultish doctrine, or some ancient superstition whose origin is lost in the mystery of Bael Turath.
They "docked" the tail at birth. Like some dogs or like my buddy who was born with a sixth finger. They just tied a string around it real tight, it lost blood flow and it fell off.

He still had the scar on his hand, but you had to know what you were looking for to tell.
