The Coven

Color:  The Coven is a shadowy organization using several methods to perpetuate it’s purposely vague directions and goals. The only thing that is common among most of its members is ambition. While they have orders to “break it down” they interpret that as they will. Each individual has their own idea of what it means to break it down, and what means they use to achieve that directive. The coven seeks to achieve it’s goals through any means necessary.

This does not mean every member has to use black mana. Most do, and green and white mages especially may not agree with the Coven’s methodology. However there are mages of several types scattered throughout.

History: The coven originally took its name from the gathering of 5 old walkers brought together and bound in a powerful ritual to the one who tricked them, Ellia the Endbringer. The candidates were carefully chosen, and are now bound together the ritual known only as The Binding. However they are more powerful than they were separately. Ellia gave them a simple order: “Break it down”.  The Coven has come to be known, by those who know of them, as a force for chaos. This is not true, one need only look to their absent master to see the reason behind their apparently random actions. The Coven has grown, with each of the five gathered walkers taking six apprentices, and these apprentices several pawns.

Organization: Ellia is mostly an absent leader, rarely giving any direction to her pawns. The coven is run by the original coven, bound by the ancient ritual, known as the inner circle. It is their whims that usually guide The Coven in Ellia’s abscense.

Below each member of The Inner Circle are six apprentices. The selection process differs among each of the members of The Inner Circle. While not as formidable as their master the apprentices still possess great magical skill further enhanced by binding ritual. this second ritual is known as The Pact. While not codified most apprentices have several pawns and minions they use in their plans and schemes.

Rules: The coven only has a few rules.

1. There can be no more than five members of the Inner Circle, and no more than six apprentices to each Circle member.

2. If a member dies or leaves they must be replaced. This includes The Inner Circle, and some rumor that Ellia has unknowingly already done this to one of the original five.

3. Any member who leaves service is to be hunted down and exterminated.

4. Apprentices work alone or in groups of 2 depending on the size of a mission. When working in groups one apprentice is chosen to take the lead.

5. Each Inner Circle Member is free to employ discipline to their apprentices as they see fit.

Known Members:

Leader: Ellia

Inner Circle:  None at this time.

Apprentices: None at this time.

The Coven sounds pretty nefarious. I'd like to see a "good guy" walker run in with them, or even end up joining, and find themselves desperate to get out. Maybe Lukas Harran.

Just thinking out loud here.

They'd also be a great silent spooky antagonist, working in the shadows against... um... anyone, really. Their long-term goals are nebulous right now.

I like the idea of a place to put disposable characters, and it does seem like a good villainous organization, particularly if Ellia is running it - Vasilias seems to be getting all the attention at the moment.

Thats one reason I want to use Ellia, the Chess masters and Vassilias are getting a lot of attention, and Ellia deserves some too. And the Coven seems like a good tool for her, people with lots of power to sow chaos, and to see how they enteract with one another.

I have Szat's approval for tieing them into Ellia. SO they are a force of breaking things down to see how they work. As well as look at what it will take for each member to break.

I've thought of a new rule:

Each member of the Coven works independantly. In some cases a second member may be sent to confirm completion, but may not act unless the original member fails.

I would like some feed back on the guidelines of the coven as well as some ideas for missions they may be sent on.

Also I'm interested in finding planes that can be messed with on small and large scales by these guys.

I'd like it if Ellia didn't actually give them missions very often, and the ones that she does give them don't always make sense. Instead, she mostly just counts on them acting as they would regardless, and gives them the general objective of gaining power.

Pretty much what I was thinking. The coven gives missions. Some from Ellia, some from themselves. Some may have an almost cultish devotion to their patron, but she mostly has set them up and is letting them run wild.

Hm, we should have a list of planes that can be safely smacked around without anyone noticing much of a distance... Faskeria is definitely one, as it's already a crapsack world. Much of Sertaria, due to its size, could be safely messed with for the sake of these stories.

The idea of Ellia using the Coven itself as a test experiment is an interesting one, especially with the idea of her just giving out cryptic orders that don't seem to have a purpose. I can see this resulting in some interesting tales.

It's interesting that we're developing two types of characters, broadly speaking--those that mess around WITHIN planes (Kirsh, Raleris, Molcru, Depowered!Vasilias) and those that mess WITH planes (Ellia, the Chessmasters, First King!Vasilias). The clashes between the two types will be fascinating to watch.

I was just watching Trigun, and it finally struck me why I like the Coven so much - they remind me of the Gung-Ho Guns with Ellia as the Knives equivalent, though the Guns are much more micromanaged than the Coven.

With that in mind, I think that we could get some inspiration from some of the members of the Gung-Ho Guns. Specifically Monev the Gale, Zazie the Beast and Leonof the Puppetmaster.

We could use a purely physical fighter - someone that could stand up to Molcru physically. A Giant, he wears heavy armor, and is closer to a walking castle than a warrior. I see him as a Red/Green Giant, perhaps from Lorwyn/Shadowmoor. Unlike Molcru, he doesn't heal from damage - he simply doesn't get hurt most of the time.

I would love to have a truly monstrous planeswalker, something like an intelligent Wurm. A master of insects, he would use a special kind of bug that allows him to control other creatures so he could interact with civilized society. (this is pretty much exactly what Zazie was in the manga, except with the motivations all twisted around)

And honestly, I just want to see a character who uses legions of golems and other artifact creatures and is a complete villain - Urza was a hero (kind of) and Mishra was more a victim than a villain. I would imagine that he would take a lot of inspiration from New Phyrexia and Esper, though he wouldn't attempt to to affect either plane on a grand scale - they're too useful as inspiration for his creations to risk messing them up.

Actually, I might write up one of them - maybe the artificer.
