By now, everyone and their mother has seen the J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie. And I too, loved it. Picked it up on DVD, even, which doesn't happen often. Most of my movie collection is from older movies, because, well...they're cheaper. One of the things that the movie emphasized was a theme that was toyed with in ST2: The Wrath of Khan as well as an old Star Trek paperback novel, aptly named The Kobayashi Maru.
For those who don't know it, the Kobayashi Maru is a simulation that Starfleet Cadets get put through: It's a no-win scenario, meaning that you're supposed to fail. And everybody sucked it up and lost, except the often-joked about Captain James T. Kirk.
So, what does the No-win Scenario have to do with D&D? Easy. Like Kirk, I also don't believe in the no-win scenario. No ... |
