Healing shouldn't be restricted to clerics! Wizards should have access to healing magic too. IMHO it doesn't make sense that clerics are always healers and wizards never are. Depends on personal choices, what their patrons teach them or give them from on high, etc. That said, magical healing can come in all the various flavors you feel like -an aura around the character, a specific spell that takes a whole round -or more!- and requires touching the subject, a hours- or day-long ritual, whatever....

Healing is a challenge, and not just the role of a cleric. While I think the 4e rules are a bit overly generous, the idea that characters can heal a significant number of hit points without the need of magic makes sense in the general design of D&D.
Hit points have always been a sort of bucket that accounts for many things other than just physical health. Being worn down during an encounter, to be able to regain some of your health with a short rest works well. Enhancing that 'healing'...

The amount of importance race should carry should be somewhat important. Probably the difference between a human, an elf, an orc, a hobgoblin and a dwarf should not be terribly large. However, once one starts talking about halflings, gnomes, goblins, kobolds or even pixies... or talks about something gigantic such as a Dragonborn or Golliath or Ogre... those difference should be extremely significant.
The difference between extremely small and quick races and large, thunderous, powerful...

As I examine each edition of the game, I like to apply what I refer to as the "Dwarven Wizard" test. In almost every edition of the game, the mechanics of race serve as a sort of straitjacket in terms of which classes a person is forced to choose from unless he or she is willing to settle for a mechanically suboptimal character. I find this stifling to player creativity, and I also feel that it promotes a bland uniformity where every halfling is a rogue, every dwarf is a fighter or cleric, and...

Sometimes it is beneficial to the character that is knocked negative to be stable but not be able to act. Usually GMs will stop attacking downed opponents and move on to another character. You could create feats or spells that make healing on dying characters more effective, or make it so the heal skill in a way to bring a character back to 0 before you heal them outside of combat. Negative hit points are good to have around for lucky crits that knock characters below 0. Having 0 equal dead...

I would be all for the idea that once a character is down in a fight, they are down for the remainder of the battle. After the battle, assuming the party is victorious, they can be restored and healed.
Negative hit points need not exist. And characters need only die when either the whole party is taken out or the other party members decide to escape the battle and leave their downed comrade behind.

When opposing, intelligent entities are involved (PC vs PC or PC vs NPC) I always prefer an opposed check (both roll their d20 and compare results) simply because that best represents the struggle between the two parties, allowing both to utilize their strengths or weaknesses instead of making it a one sided affair (in fact, I have the passive AC number for that reason as well, I much rather prefer an opposed roll between two fighters then either passively beating against the other's AC).

When playing 3.5, one of my groups came across an interesting phenomenon. Someone read an optional rule that basically said your armor class counts as "taking 10" on an attack defense roll and that optionally a player could roll their AC (instead of your actual AC, take the current AC subtract 10, roll a d20 and add it and that is your AC for that attack). In very tight battles many of my players, especially the dwarven defender, insisted on rolling their AC. It made for much more excitement and...

Proficient real world fighters really tend to focus primarily on one fighting style. There are only a few types of historical fighters that used bows, spears and swords-- and they were all from the noble class of society.
Everyone else has always chosen to master what sort of fighting style, perfect one weapon. This should be considered in the narrative.

Something a lot of people forget about the fighter is that its name is a broad term for many different kinds of men-at-arms. This is why many people argue that ranger and paladin should be fighter themes because honestly they really can be.
The fighter should have a multitude of styles and options available to them but they shouldn't be allowed to have them all. The fighter in question has to pick and choose what he/she actually knows, and from there get better at it. You can make a very...
