I'm a big believer in "Getting to Yes." Present the options, all the options, to the players, and see what they latch onto. Then build a game around what they are playing. If they want to play a Tiefling, don't screw them over for wanting to play the Tiefling. Build a story that will accommodate that choice. If the player WANTS to have risks involved with the racial choice (because those risks could be a roleplaying MINE, like having to wear robes to disguise a devilish appearance), that's...

My campaign is quasi-historical, so I'm constantly saying no to races I haven't already distorted history to accommodate. I don't care one way or another about the frequency designations, because it should vary greatly from setting to setting.

I really like the idea proposed by Kayal. Alternate names in stat blocks allow the best of both worlds with the added bonus of providing additional inspiration for roleplaying

I find this an absolutely brilliant idea. It keeps the history of the game while presenting options that doesn't exactly fit. One might even go as far to say that several versions of the same spell exist in a world, but the manifestation remains different with each variation (Example: Bigby's Crushing Hand may appear different in some way than Zarumon's Crushing Hand). I don't propose the difference to be enough to actually matter mechanically, but visual cues and flavor could differ that...

I like varying complexities and mechanics between character classes. That's what makes it fun. A wizard doesn't have healing powers, sword-skills, armor, or an affinity for stealth and shadow. In being a wizard you have chosen that you want to be a spellcaster, one who fights with his magic. In being a rogue, you have forgone spellbooks and claymores for sneak attacks and lock-picking. Maybe the NUMBER of traits doesn't add up, but those traits are also in varying areas of that character, and...

Just joined and grinding through previous posts. I wanted to agree with Blackdrazon. I believe it is very important to have classes that are both simpler and more complicated than the median (yes, that will happen by definition, buy you know what I mean). There need to be novice-friendly classes to introduce new players, and more complex classes for those who like to juggle options.
The simple option is especially important. I run a youth D&D game and I've watched them run through...

My Profile

    About Me

About Me: I guess I am one of those antique gamers or at least becoming one. I began playing D&D and Avalon Hill war-themed and rpg boxed games at age 9 and that was roughly 25 years ago. I still continue to play RPGs both table top and online as well as MtG with my wife, friends, and also my children who are in training. I have played all editions of D&D except the latest as player and GM. I also play many other games not in the TSR/WotC lines. I am US Army Veteran where I used to DM every weekend in other countries and stateside. I haven't played nearly as much as I want to since I've gotten out. Time is limited while I finish my Mathematics and CompSci degree.
Movies: Sci-Fi and Action pretty much covers it. I'll watch a good drama, comedy, or romance movie if they grab my attention either from the cover, trailer, review, or otherwise.
TV Shows: Again Sci-Fi and Action mainly. I like those CSI type shows also, although, I believe I am not susceptible to the CSI-effect.
Books, Comics and Graphic Novels: The original TMNT before they became kiddified, X-Men, and Punisher.
Music: Can listen to anything, but normally stay up to date with top 40 music.
