I think there should be a damage type associated to every weapon, but applying it should be an optional rule.
Weapon damage type should also be relevant how effective they deal damage against specific types of armor.

Weapon damage types are fine so long as they are not over-used. A character shouldn't be expected to carry three different weapons depending on the type of armor their enemy is wearing.

Proficient real world fighters really tend to focus primarily on one fighting style. There are only a few types of historical fighters that used bows, spears and swords-- and they were all from the noble class of society.
Everyone else has always chosen to master what sort of fighting style, perfect one weapon. This should be considered in the narrative.

Something a lot of people forget about the fighter is that its name is a broad term for many different kinds of men-at-arms. This is why many people argue that ranger and paladin should be fighter themes because honestly they really can be.
The fighter should have a multitude of styles and options available to them but they shouldn't be allowed to have them all. The fighter in question has to pick and choose what he/she actually knows, and from there get better at it. You can make a very...

I really like the idea proposed by Kayal. Alternate names in stat blocks allow the best of both worlds with the added bonus of providing additional inspiration for roleplaying

I find this an absolutely brilliant idea. It keeps the history of the game while presenting options that doesn't exactly fit. One might even go as far to say that several versions of the same spell exist in a world, but the manifestation remains different with each variation (Example: Bigby's Crushing Hand may appear different in some way than Zarumon's Crushing Hand). I don't propose the difference to be enough to actually matter mechanically, but visual cues and flavor could differ that...

I would prefer to see multiple attacks as a "Feat" or theme selection. Some warriors are good at beating down one opponent, others are good at fighting several at once. And a lesson we learn from "The Princess Bride" is that these two styles are very divergent.

I'm all for multiple attacks or single attacks being a Feat or Theme option. In particular, the idea that any attack in a sequence could be a Combat Maneuver appeals to me.
Being able to choose between complex combos or large, single strikes feels like a nice, Fighter appropriate equivalent to a Wizard's spell preparation options.

I like varying complexities and mechanics between character classes. That's what makes it fun. A wizard doesn't have healing powers, sword-skills, armor, or an affinity for stealth and shadow. In being a wizard you have chosen that you want to be a spellcaster, one who fights with his magic. In being a rogue, you have forgone spellbooks and claymores for sneak attacks and lock-picking. Maybe the NUMBER of traits doesn't add up, but those traits are also in varying areas of that character, and...

Just joined and grinding through previous posts. I wanted to agree with Blackdrazon. I believe it is very important to have classes that are both simpler and more complicated than the median (yes, that will happen by definition, buy you know what I mean). There need to be novice-friendly classes to introduce new players, and more complex classes for those who like to juggle options.
The simple option is especially important. I run a youth D&D game and I've watched them run through...
