Well I took smerwin's advice and it seemed to go off really well. The party knocked out the possessed Sir Moonbrook, headed straight to the Temple of the Lawbringer, locked the possessed sir Moonbrooked in a confessional, thought Devi was a bit suspicious, then went to visit the Sacred Grove and were welcomed by the druid who told them he suspected bandit activity at the Moathouse because "the animals told him". Wrapped up in 90 minutes nicely with a hook for next time.

Yay

I'll remember that! Tongue Out

Yeah, I think I'll go with a bit of leading them around town via NPCs. Thanks for the input, all.

{Nowhere does it say the direction that the characters enter the town. I figured that they would not have entered around location 1 since that is the way to the moathouse. I instead had them come in closest to the temple. They dropped off the paladin and also were suspicious of them (but foolishly blew the suspicions off). I then let them go across the street to knock on the door of the war hero. I played him as a recluse not associating with people. I had a "retired military man" background character in the group so he convinced Big Jay (?) to open the door. The party was invited in and saw that the house was very messy. They also spied an artist picture above a fireplace of a family with him in it and his wife and kids. They inferred that something must have happened to them. I them described their kidnapping in the fields. That is a way to use the city locations to pull the knowledge out instead of not roleplaying and just telling what they know.

The group then went to see Wyndell. While they were meeting with him, I had him notice that one of his wagons was missing. He went inside, got his ledger, and told the group about the lumber shipment. (2 reasons now to go caving). They went to the general store and briefly talked to the owners. I made sure they knew that there were a lot of basic goods on the shelves and no weapons (blacksmith for that.)  They went to the Dragon tavern where they tried to get a room. While there the old people told them that the carpenter was angering them by not building them the addition. They went to the carpenter and talked to his wife and then him. Suspicously they left and went back at night. They figured out by luck what was going on there with the kids.

My group stayed at the Wench but they were not attacked the first night either. I had the arm wrestling contest the first night. Wee Bertha crushed the first round but then I rolled crappy and she lost, storming out. I plan on a rematch when the main event happens! The night passed and then I made sure they went to talk to the druid. He gave some more info but the group chose to go caving.

New DMS. If you want to retain the mystery of the town push for the PC's to go anywhere but the cave first.}

The Moat House is 4 hours north of Hommel Lane according to page 21. We know the Caves of Chaos are to the east so I had them come in from the southwest corner because the Barony is to the west. This leaves the Fathomless Fens to the south which I think makes sense because the Veon Farmstead is right there.

My group started with the Druest Cottages (Area 2). Most of the group follows the Old Faith so they were more interested in visiting the Druid first so Pierre gave them directions. I had Wyndell insist they stop at the closest warehouse to unload (across from area 4). Wyndell said he had an appointment to keep with Rhonnet Gho to unlock the warehouse. I intend for Rhonnet to be kidnapped on his way home. I described the buildings they passed along the way. They expressed some interest in the Inn of the Winsome Wench but decided to press on to the Druid.

Ashstaff told them about the bandit Moat House (I did an extra bandit attack along the way to Hommel Lane to dangle the hook). He could not heal Moonbrook but told them the only the only other spellcasters of note left in town were at the Temple of the Lawbringer. They left Moonbrook there, stopped at the Slumbering Serpent Tavern meeting Felixo. After buying a round of drinks for the group and listening to their stories he insisted on having breakfast with them at the Golden Grain Inn where he is staying.

We ended there because of time constraints so we will start with them staying at the inn. They will learn about Felixo and Rhonnet in the morning. They've all decided they want to tackle the Bandit problem first.

A good time was had by all.

Knowing my players, I didn't think they would really spend a lot of time in town going from door to door exploring and investigating. I was actually afraid that they'd march into town, find out about the bandits, and want to run right off in that direction right away, ending the session in an hour! (As one of the 3 tables at our FLGS did.)

Still, I wanted to play up the bandit raids a bit more, to make that threat a bit more "real," so I ended up adding another combat at the beginning. At the very same bridge where "Possessed Attack" was to take place, I added a group of 9 bandits (I had a party of 7 PCs) who were demanding a "toll" to cross the bridge. My PCs took out the bandits, then took a quick breather, when Moonbrook went to the stream and became possessed. Went pretty well, actually. Two encounters in one, teasing two quests for later.

They then had about 45 minutes in town. I had them enter by the farms at #1, where they asked for directions to the Temple to drop off Moonbrook. I described the prominent buildings in town as they walked through en route to the Temple. I also gave them a copy of the town map for them to label as they wanted.

They weren't in the least bit suspicious of Devi at the Temple, though I didn't really give them much reason to be. The disappearance of the Cannoness raised some eyebrows though. I teased some more of the disappearances via gossip with Wyndell over dinner, just enough to get the PCs wondering what was up, but not quite enough to draw them away from the very real, in their face, bandit problem.

I think they plan to visit the Lords at the start of the next session, which won't go so well for them (bwahahaha), but I'll get to tease more disappearances via the Castellan.

It was a great time. I could tell that the PCs' interests were piqued by the two paths seeminly laid in front of them. It's nice that they are really trying to decide what they want to investigate next, rather than being pushed along by the current.

Here is a interesting & quick question:

Who is the Current Mayor of Hommel Lane?

I see that they have a few people running but no mention of the current one?

If you have an idea, let me know.

Thanks,

~Rob H.

I would assume the current mayor disappeared, which is why they have to have a new election.

I like that. So it adds to the weird happenings in this town! Really Good Thinking!

Thanks,

Hehe, I wondered that myself. Bit of an oversight from the adventure notes, though!

My PCs were willing, even eager, to buy into Bertram's line, so I have played him up as their big confidante in the town.  Next week will be the epic betrayal, as I am going to place him with Devi under the Temple; the characters had grown rather close to him so I want the betrayal to cut a bit more deeply. I have been playing up the fact that no one is in charge in Hommel Lane; several times, Bertram has told the PCs that "the Lords haven't been seen in weeks, the Canoness left last month, and the Druid never leaves his grove.  There's no mayor right now, so I do the best I can, pouring drinks and keeping people happy."  My PCs have for some reason swallowed all of this hook, line, and sinker.
