I was wondering if I can get some input for next week's encounter.

week 6 & 7 spoiler Show


One group managed to save Splintershield.  He was left with 4 HP and it came down to Him putting his remaining energy into the ward and sacrificing himself for a slightly longer duration of the ward or him staying alive and the shield dropping.  The players tried to assist him but the shield came down.  The players felt a little upset that the shield still came down even though they saved Splintershield.  So as a reward I was thinking that he could impart some kind of buff on the players for week 7 as he is too hurt to follow them back to town.

Ideas I had:

Increased damage or attack vs undead or ghost

A one time bonus damage that wouldn't be subject to the ghosts of week 7 resistance (aka a single attack does force damage)

When they are within the bounds of where the cleansing ritual was done on the town they get awareness of where undead are within the fading ritual and get a bonus to initiative.

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.  This group worked their butt off to keep Splintershield alive and I want to find a creative way to reward them for it.

Sure thing.  Seems like lots of discussion over the survival of Brother Splintershield and the protective ritual.  Here is my idea for your situation:

Each player gains one use of the daily power:
Wrath of Moradin
Minor Action
Effect:  You do Force damage with any melee or ranged attack until the end of your turn.
With his dying breath Aldus Splintershield involked a blessing on you.  Moradin's wrath fills you and and you know you may channel it to devastating effect on the phantoms who threaten his work!

shield had to come down for game purposes, I had Aldus KO'ed.  When he awoke, he terrifiedly asked the other cleric if he had been unconscious or dying, as that would drop his protective ward.  Now the group is running post-haste back to Inverness, with Aldus at 2 HP and no Healing Surges

  I had to come up with a story element to have the ward come down, but not have Aldus die as well. Before the game started people had focused on keeping Aldus alive, because they figured that the ward was connected to him. They also liked Aldus a lot - about the only thing all of the characters did agree on . There are THREE clerics in an eight party party group, so he was not going to die. (He got close though). I had one of the ghost knights have an enchanted dagger that if it gravely injured Aldus then the ward would come down. The Phantom Brigade had four months to plan, so I figured that this was not a stretch. This worked well and the party is rushing back - with a live Aldus - to save the town.

I went with something similar to what you had suggested Dreamdarwin

Week 7 info Show


Splintershield was still alive at the end of week 6 so we started week 7 with a little roleplay with him.  He talked about how in his weakened state (4HP left) he could have put his life energy into the spell to keep it up for a while longer, but with his death it would come down, or let it fall and recast it once he is strong enough to maintain it.  Since he wasn't dead there should still be a bit of a blessing of Moradin left in Inverness, so he did a chant, the group felt a warm glow fall over them briefly, then Splintershield informed them that if they invoke the name of Moradin while they are on the site that was until recently protected by the ritual they would be able to harm any creatures that the ritual used to keep out.

Game mechanics wise if a player shouted out to Moradin at the start of his turn their attacks would deal force damage in addition to other types until the end of the turn.  

Only 3 out of the 5 players used this.  The first was the Dwarf Knight (a follower of Moradin) who invoked Moradin to bless his shield, which he then held in front of him while charging through ghosts to get to the city perimeter during the skill challenge.  The group failed the skill challenge, practically on purpose.  The second was the Axe melee Half-Orc Scout (melee hunter I always get the names mixed up) who charged around a corner to nail a justicar.  He blew every cooldown he had along with a fortune card to one shot the Justicar.  The third was the Dwarven warpriest who invoked Moradin on the remaining justicar after it had suffered a few minor hits, then hit it with a Smite Undead for massive overkill.

The group had a fairly easy time this week, but they enjoyed the added blessing received from keeping Splintershield alive through the nasty fight the week before.  looking at next week I think the two that didn't use this special ability yet will be glad they saved it.
