I have players from last season that were extremely disappointed that the rewards they have earned in previous seasons are being phased out. If given the choice of having a bonus available every round or have one available for the entire encounter, there seems to be little point in selecting the single use option.
I agree that loyalty to the Encounters program should be rewarded, so I came up with the following modification:
Players who are using Fortune Cards can select one previous season reward card as well. Once per Encounter, instead of playing a card during a round, the player may discard it instead to invoke the reward card's ability.

That is a good system. I definitely did not want to remove the old rewards from our game seeing as how some of them were just earned in the last battle of the last season. The only thing I did different was I did not require them to discard the current fortune card in hand, it just could not be played the same round as the old renown reward.

I can say that Chris Tulach (the head of WoTC DnD organized play) is our store organizer and he told us we could either use the fortune cards or the former reward cards with characters this season. Not truly official but if he house rules it why shouldn't you'r organizer be able to?

The adventure from the new season specifically says that players can use either Rewards Cards or Fortune Cards. One or the other.

This is true. However its a bad idea, and one unfair to the people who have been playing for over a years worth of the past 3 seasons of DDE. It also means if you have a good selection of the Encounters rewards cards, the player will be less likely to buy Fortune Cards.
My approach was similar to above. You can use your Fortune Cards just as the rules state, or you can play you Encounters rewards card. You can do -both- but only one option "per round". That made the people who worked their buts off for Season 3's 100pt card happy, and people have been building big decks of FC's! I'm doing WotC's marketing for them, silly people that they are!
