I was helping my daughter create a DDE character, and the option to select a background seems to be disabled. Is that a rule for DDE or is it a bug in the Character Builder? Thanks!

Technically Essentials characters do not use background rules. But... Feel free to ask your DM if they will allow them. The rules are simple to integrate and if you are adding a skill, not overtly number happy. You can actually make an essentials character by choosing the "Home Game" option in the CB and then choosing the appropriate Essentials class.

I really miss backgrounds. Between no backgrounds and no multiclassing, you have to burn a feat for the sole purpose of picking up a skill that's not on your class list. For something situational like escaping grabs, that is really annoying.
